jazzweek.com • May 1, 2006 JazzWeek 9 Artist Q&A: Ben Allison

Lourdes Delgado omposer/bassist Ben Allison has been a part of the jazz land- scape thanks to a phenomenal run of albums for Palmetto CRecords. Not only has he led his own bands, he’s also been the main force behind the loose group of younger musicians who work together as the Jazz Composers Collective. Here Allison talks about his new band and political-minded new album, Cowboy Jus- tice, and also gives JazzWeek the lowdown on the unofficial disso- lution of the JCC after more than a decade of organizing concerts and commissioning new compositions. In the spirit of passing our work along to others, we also had Ben give us his own picks for his favorite politically charged jazz albums. – Tad Hendrickson

JazzWeek: So the new record marks the debut of a new quartet for you. Ben Allison: We’ve been playing together for about eight months, but it still feels new. It’s a quartet, which is new, because my groups tend to be larger quintets, sextets and larger. And there’s the line-up of guitar, trumpet, bass and drums. I’m looking around on the internet and I don’t see anyone using that line-up. I don’t know why. But part of my inspiration for putting this to-

It’s nice that he plays acoustic guitar. You don’t hear a lot of that on jazz re- cords. Yeah. And he plays nylon-string guitar beautifully too, which is not on the re- cord. He has a couple of different guitars, and makes good use of them. The main one he uses is the one he got in grade school. It has this warm mid-range tone, which from the perspective of a bass player is great. I came up in an era where a lot of guys had this overly large and, in my opinion, overly processed sound. It covers the whole tonal spectrum almost the way an organ would. For the same reason organ players typically don’t use bass, I felt uncomfortable with using someone who had that large sound. Like I had to compete with it. Not just in volume but in tone. Having a guitar makes this band a little more flexible – you don’t need a pi- ano to play live and the more aggressive passages could cross over into the rock world. Exactly. I did want to make, kinda, a rock album in a way. If Peace Pipe had an African tinge, Third Eye had a world music tinge, and Riding The Nuclear Tiger was sort of ’60s jazz, this one has a little tinge of rock. I want each al- bum to have a little bit of rock in it, and with this one it fit even more because of the Americana themes. Yeah, guitar is fun to rock out with and Steve’s from Kansas City and it has a certain sensibility of that. So are you looking to crossover with your music? Yeah. It’s nothing against the mindset of a knowledgeable audience, but I re- ally love it when people come to the show without any preconceived notions. So they are not trying to make any comparative analysis. Instead, they are just continued ... jazzweek.com • May 1, 2006 JazzWeek 11 Artist Q&A: Ben Allison (continued)

listening to it. Or comparing it to what they know, which could be whatever. I love that because I always get an interesting reaction. Some guy in Portugal told me we sound like , which is so out of left field but to me interest- ing. I’d rather get that than one time in Amsterdam where this guy comes up to me after a Herbie Nichols gig and said: “Very interesting, but why do you swing so much?” [Laughs] I don’t think any jazz musician on earth has ever been asked that question. I couldn’t even respond to that. It was the strangest thing I think I’ve ever heard. I felt like saying, “Because I can!” The cool thing is sometimes, like with Coldplay, I’ll go and check out the music they reference and see if I figure out what they are hearing. Your wife works in politics and diplomacy, is that the inspiration for the political bent on Cowboy Justice? The thought has occurred to me, but as she points out: Jazz is musical diplomacy. She brings up an interesting point in that the average Iranian likes Americans. It sure- ly isn’t because of George Bush. It’s because of the oth- er things we do – our culture and music and movies and whatever else they like. In that sense, music is signifi- cant. I’ve never articulated my political beliefs. Most of the time I try to express them through what I do either with the collective or with my music. I figured that if I’m ever going to open my mouth, now is the time to do it. It’s not a straight political album though. Some of it is tongue-in-cheek. It’s all heartfelt, but I try not to take this stuff too seriously. But, you know, it’s kind of a f—ed-up scene. So the music comes out of that. Even though the music was borne out of anger and frustration, I wanted to counter it with something posi- tive and joyous. It’s the way I see this country and the way I would like to see it perceived from abroad. When I was frustrated with the music scene, I formed the Collective. I wanted to do something positive. When we travel as musicians we see how people perceive the country right now. It’s horrifying to me and it’s not how I want them to see it. I wanted to show another side to recast the image of the country. I do it through music because that’s what I do. I talk to people and a lot of my con- temporaries feel the same way. What’s the reaction been? It’s been good. We get a good reaction when we go overseas. People are able to differentiate leaders and misguided politicians from the actual people who live here. So where does the “Theme To Midnight Cowboy” fit into all this? Mostly it fits in because I love the tune. We did it for 13 years, me and my wife, and did the major- ity of the work. It served its purpose well in providing a forum for a number of bands over time and other musicians – every concert would feature someone who had never performed with us before. By the end, there have been over 200 musicians involved, and over 300 compositions premiered (new music was our focus). It brought attention to this kind of jazz. It created a great atmosphere, which was casual but concert-like – I didn’t want it to be stuffy, but I didn’t want cash registers to be going in the background. Ben Allison’s Top s I’m thinking of albums that would fit the bill I could only think of things from the 3 Political Albums A ’50s thru early ’70s. Maybe it’s due to my lack of awareness of certain modern artists. Or (plus two songs) is there less politically-oriented work being put out these days? – Ben Allison 1. Charlie Haden – Liberation Music Orchestra

Charlie Haden’s Liberation Music Orchestra, which was record- ed in 1970, featured arrangements by Carla Bley and a who’s-who of the musical vanguard of that era. The album includes a num- ber of Spanish Civil War songs and “We Shall Overcome” among originals by Charlie, Carla, and Ornette Coleman. 2. Sonny Rollins – Freedom Suite

One of the first “protest albums” released by a jazz musician, Freedom Suite was Sonny’s overt political statement regarding ra- cial inequities in America in the 1950s. On the original release, changed the title of the album and did not in- clude Sonny’s liner notes, replacing them with toned down notes by . 3. – We Insist! Freedom Now Suite

Recorded in 1960, Freedom Now Suite has a great cover and features the vocalizations of Abbey Lincoln (who was married to Roach at the time) and the fascinating pairing of and .

4. Charles Mingus – Mingus Presents Mingus

Also recorded in 1960, this is probably my favorite Mingus re- cord. On “Original Faubus Fables,” Mingus speaks out (literally) against the racist actions of then Arkansas governor Orval Faubus.

5. John Coltrane – “Alabama”

Inspired by the KKK bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1963, this tune appears on Live at Birdland.
