IYA2009 Cornerstone project By showcasing some of the best images from the fleet of space-based Image exhibition observatories and wide array of telescopes (and astrophotographers) on the From Earth to the Universe ground, FETTU strives to engage as many people as possible in the wonders of the Universe. As one of the 12 global Cornerstone projects being supported by International Year of Astronomy 2009, FETTU is, in fact, reaching its goals halfway through IYA2009. Over 60 countries in more than 250 separate exhibitions are participating in FETTU. From tiny villages to the largest cities — with budgets large and small — FETTU has been featured on every continent except Antarctica. Since we have framed this project — largely by way of the title — as a journey, we decided to take a tour of the destinations that we have already visited, take stock of our experiences and look at where FETTU might go in the future. Getting started is recognised as a successful tool for the spirit of IYA2009. Jayanne [email protected] Received Day Month Year Revised Day Month Year Bold colour images from telescopes act as extraordinary ambassadors for research astronomers because they pique the public's curiosity. But are they snapshots docu- menting physical reality? Or are we looking at artistic spacescapes created by digitally manipulating astronomy images? This paper provides a tour of how original black and white data, from all regimes of the electromagnetic spectrum, are converted into the colour images gracing popular magazines, numerous websites, and even clothing. The history and method of the technical construction of these images is outlined. However, the paper focuses on introducing the scientific reader to visual literacy (e.g. human per- ception) and techniques from art (e.g. composition, colour theory) since these techniques can produce not only striking but politically powerful public outreach images. When cre- ated by research astronomers, the cultures of science and visual art can be balanced and the image can illuminate scientific results sufficiently strongly that the images are also used in research publications. Included are reflections on how they could feedback into astronomy research endeavours and future forms of visualization as well as on the rele- vance of outreach images to visual art. It enables the research community to extract new knowledge from complex datasets, and plays an equally vital role in communicating new results across a spectrum of public audiences. Visualizations which make research results accessible to the public have been popularized by the press, and are used in formal education, informal learning settings, and all aspects of lifelong learning. In particular, visualizations of astronomical data (hereafter “astrovisualization” or “astroviz”) have broadly captured the human imagination, and are in high demand. Astrovisualization practitioners need a wide variety of specialized skills and expertise spanning multiple disciplines (art, science, technology). As astrophysics research continues to evolve into a more data rich science, astroviz is also evolving from artists conceptions to data-driven visualizations, from two-dimensional images to three-dimensional prints, requiring new skills for development. Currently astroviz practitioners are spread throughout the country. Due to the specialized nature of the field there are seldom enough practitioners at one location to form an effective research group for the exchange of knowledge on best practices and new techniques.

A preliminary look at informal learning implications for a large-scale non- traditional science outreach project Kimberly Arcand and Megan Watzke ABSTRACT: “From Earth to the Universe” (FETTU) is a collection of astronomical images that showcase some of the most popular, current views of our Universe. The images, representing the wide variety of astronomical objects known to exist, have so far been exhibited in about 500 locations throughout the world as part of the International Year of Astronomy. In the United States, over 40 FETTU exhibits have occurred in 25 states in such locations as libraries, airports, nature centers, parks and college campuses. Based on preliminary evaluations currently underway, this project – a large-scale, worldwide astronomy outreach in non-traditional locations – has unique opportunities and implications for informal science learning. We present some early findings from the observational section of the exhibit’s formal evaluation in five selected locations in the U.S. and U.K., including emphasis on inter-organizational networking, visitor attention and participant make-up as well as generative aspects of the exhibit.     Type of Author Co-authors Title Abstract submission Keynote John Besley Communication strategies The scientific community would benefit if science communicators behaved more strategically when making communication choices. Doing so could increase the for scientists and science likelihood that the time and resources we put into communication advance the scientific enterprise.Being truly strategic in science communication likely means communicators starting with the identification of clear, long-term, audience-specific behavioral goals. It should then involve using theory and evidence to prioritize intermediate communication objectives that have the best chance of achieving the identified goals, as well as communication tactics that have the best chance to achieve the prioritized objectives. Tools such as dialogue, storytelling, audience-analysis, and jargon-free communication are useful tactics, but they are not strategies, goals, or objectives. Similarly, increasing scientific knowledge and excitement are often key intermediate objectives but rarely the end-goal of communication.A first step to becoming a more strategic communicator is to understand (a) the difference between long-term behavioral goals and intermediate communication objectives, and (b) the range of communication objectives that communicators can choose. This talk will suggest just two main types of goals and a limited range of objectives that most science communicators need to consider. These two goals include changing either audience or communicator behavior, or legitimacy judgments. Potential communication objectives include evaluative beliefs about the natural world (i.e., scientific knowledge), other people (i.e., trustworthiness, social norms), and behaviors, as well as a range of discrete emotions and frames. Knowing more about goals and objectives enables nuanced, evidence-based, and creative discussions about the infinite range of tactical choices available to science communicators.The talk will be grounded in research conducted by the author and his colleagues over the last decade.

The project provides verbal descriptions of high energy astrophysics data (primarily images and data-driven movies or sonifications, as well as illustrations when required) when they are released. The information is provided in both text and audio formats, and used as alternative texts for web and social me-dia platforms. The audio recordings have been concatenated into a podcast XML feed after obtaining user feedback. Hunt and Christine Malec (subject matter experts in science communi- cation, verbal description and/or the blind and low vision communities), Chandra visualization scientist Dr. Kimberly Arcand and Chandra press scientist and astrophysicist Dr. Peter Edmonds. These user-tested materials have been informing how other Chandra captions or descriptions for non-experts are written for overall improvement to accessibility and inclusion. Technique: The Chandra team has had many years of experience creating descriptions of visualizations that were verified by astrophysics experts. However, the nature and complexity of the Chandra images, including those combined with data from other telescopes, provided additional challenges to usefully portray them for people who are blind or low vision. In consultation with an audio description consumer and writer who is also blind, it was clear early on that a unique approach was required.
