The large biological variety of the genus suggests a very strong possibility for diversification, which meets a present goal for forests and natural resources. Wood from 6-year-old trees of Eucalyptus botryoides, E. camaldulensis, E. globulus, E. grandis, E. maculata, E. ovata, E. propinqua, E. resinifera, E. rudis, E. saligna, E. sideroxylon and E. viminalis, was used for chemical and pulping experiments. The summative chemical composition showed substantial differences between species: extractives content varied from 6% (E. viminalis, E. globulus and E. ovata) to 19% (E. camaldulensis), lignin content from 22% (E. maculata) to 31% (E. resinifera), and holocellulose content from 55% (E. camaldulensis) to 70% (E. globulus). Kraft pulping was conducted in microdigestors. E. globulus showed the highest yield (50%) and residual alkali (2.9%), and the lowest kappa number (12) and solids in black liquor (17.2%).E. camaldulensis presented the lowest yield (39%) and residual alkali (1.2%) and E.

    Kyoto University Two Versions of Buddhist Karen History of the Late British Colonial Period in Burma: Kayin Chronicle (1929) and Kuyin Great Chronicle (1931) Kazuto Ikeda* The majority of the Karen people in Burma are in fact Buddhist, in spite of their widespread image as Christian, pro-British, anti-Burman, and separatist. In the last decade of British rule, two Buddhist interpretations of Karen history—virtually the first ethnic self-assertion by the Buddhist Karens—were published along with the first Christian version. Writing in Burmese for Burmese readers, the authors of these Buddhist versions sought to prove that the Karen were a legitimate people (lumyo) comparable to the Burman and Mon in the Buddhist world, with dynastic lineages of their own kingship (min) reaching back into the remote past, and a group faithful to their religious order (thathana). This linkage of ethnicity=kingship=religion was presented in order to persuade skeptical readers who believed that the Karen, lacking the tradition of Buddhist min, were too primitive to constitute an authentic lumyo of the thathana world. Analysis of these texts will shed light on the social formation of Karen identity among the Buddhists from the 1920s to the 1930s. This will also lead us to consider the historical processes whereby the quasi-ethnic idioms and logic innate to the Burmese-speaking world were transformed in the face of modern and Western notions of race and nation, and consequently the mutation of Burma into an ethnically articulated society. Incorporating fillers within pulp fibers has been subject to research since 1960 (Green et al. 1962, Scallan et al. 1985, Allen et al. 1992). Fiber Loading™ is a method for manufacturing precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) directly within the pulp processing system. The Fiber Loading™ process results in fiber loaded precipitated calcium carbonate (FLPCC™) being partly deposited both within the fiber on the fiber walls and in between the fibers, targeting replacement of cellulose fibers, due to the fact that fillers are normally cheaper than the cellulose fibers. The Fiber Loading™ process results in potential raw material and energy savings for the papermaker. In addition, there are potential increases in both the physical and optical paper properties, as well as increasing the environmental savings by reducing free solids in the paparmaking process water stream.
