It uses the period of the war, and the diverse responses to the conflict by immigrants and their institutions of civil society, to highlight patterns of social cohesion and division within Italian overseas communities. It centers its analysis on a pro-war immigrant mobilization influenced by Italian nationalism and an anti-war movement shaped by working-class ideologies that emphasized Internationalism. It therefore considers the tangible connections and sentimental relationships that existed between Italian immigrants in South America and political and intellectual leaders in Italy, a nation-state that existed only from the mid- nineteenth century.

  • Aurelio Saffi

I will be your chair for the weekend of MUNUC, during which time I’ll represent Giuseppe Mazzini. I’m incredibly excited to welcome you to a little-known (and less understood) time in history! The Roman Republic of 1849 represents how people tried to bring ideals of individuality, freedom, and equality to reality. Although the real-world Republic fell to a French invasion, I hope that you can gather your creativity, knowledge, and collaboration to change history and build a Republic that will last. I’m a current senior at the University of Chicago, studying Biology with a specialization in Endocrinology on the pre-medical track. I staff MUNUC, run our collegiate conference ChoMUN as Director-General, and compete on our travel team. Outside of MUN, I do research in a genetic neurobiology lab with fruit flies, volunteer at the UChicago Hospital, and TA for courses such as Organic Chemistry, Genetics, and Core Biology. I also like to write poetry, paint, and perform Shakespeare! If at any point you want to share something or ask a question, on anything from your favorite novel to college life, just reach out to me at [email protected].

  • Giuseppe Garibaldi and Sweden: Between Solidarity and Scandinavism by Monica Quirico
Giuseppe Garibaldi and Sweden: Between Solidarity and Scandinavism by Monica Quirico The book entitled Scandinavia: Her Fears and Her Hopes, written in French, was published on February 29, 1856, in Paris, where representatives of the European Powers were discussing peace negotiations with Russia ensuing the end of the Crimean War. The author, Gustaf Lallerstedt, a moderate liberal, a diplomat, and majority shareholder of the liberal newspaper "Aftonbladet", was first in outlining a parallelism between the proactive role played by Piedmont in Italy's unification and the similar one that Sweden, in his opinion, ought to take upon herself vis-à-vis Scandinavian unity. Lallerstedt's aim was also to warn the European nations against the Russian threat; in this perspective, strengthening the United Kingdom of Sweden and Norway (established in 1814) could provide an effective remedy1. Sweden had been experiencing for some decades a wave of "Scandinavism", the starting point of which dates back to a theatre performance staged in 1829. Then, the Swedish outstanding academician Esaias Tegnér addressed the Danish poet Adam Gottlob Oehlenschläger, one of the most prominent exponents of Nordic Romanticism, with the following words: "The age of disagreement [between Swedes and Danes] is over". During the 1830s, this wave spread throughout the Nordic countries, particularly amongst university students. Scandinavism was first of all an intellectual phenomenon, but was not devoid of a political program, i.e. the unification, in ways yet to be determined, of Sweden, Norway and Denmark2. However, the rhetoric of Nordic unity was unable to hide the not insignificant divergences of the national interests of the three countries involved.

  • Italian Paper Money Prior to Unification - Part Ii
ITALIAN PAPER MONEY PRIOR TO UNIFICATION - PART II Napoleon Invades Italy In eighteenth century Italy the majority of the population was illiterate. Despite this fact, the ideals of the French Revolution were quick to take hold. At the end of the 1700s, the peninsula was governed by a succession of small independent kingdoms and duchies as well as Austria in the north and the Spanish Bourbon family in the south. The Italians, upon hearing of the success of the French people in overthrowing Louis XVI, also desired to share in the newfound freedoms which liberty brought. The various Italian kingdoms opposed French revolutionary ideas, viewing them as a threat to their stability. Seeing the writing upon the wall, King Victor Amadeus III of Piedmont allied his kingdom with the Austrians and British in an effort to contain French aggression. When the French army occupied Savoy and Nice, which belonged to Piedmont, King Amadeus's greatest fears were realized. The Napoleonic Wars commenced with the French campaign in Italy. French troops invaded Italy in March 1796 and in a year's time were in control of all of Italy to the Po River Valley. The former kingdoms of Piedmont and Lombardy and the Republic of Venice were overrun and occupied, thus ensuring the political future of Napoleon Bonaparte. Napoleon then turned his attention south where he hoped to outflank the Austrians and gain control over the Papal States and the Kingdom of Naples. As a stepping stone, France occupied the northernmost Papal Legations in 1797. In January 1798 Rome and the remainder of the Papal States were occupied.
