I also certify that the thesis has been written by me. Any help that I have received in my research work and the preparation of the thesis itself has been acknowledged. In addition, I certify that all information sources and literature used are indicated in the thesis. Signature of Student: Date: 12 August 2014 3 INTRODUCTION Alf Pollard’s contribution to the business history of Australia is as yet unwritten—both as a biography of the man himself, but also his singular, albeit often quiet, achievements. He helped to shape the business world in which he operated and, in parallel, made outstanding contributions to Australian society. Cultural deprivation theory tells us that people who are working class have themselves to blame for the failure of their children in education1 and Alf was certainly from a low socio-economic, indeed extremely poor, family. He fitted such a child to the letter, although he later turned out to be an outstanding counter-example despite having no ‘built-in’ advantage as he not been socialised in a dominant wealthy culture.

Sparks will fly as acclaimed pianist Simon Tedeschi joins forces with Adelaide percussionist Nick Parnell in a musical celebration of rhythm, colour and vitality. Blurring the lines between classical and jazz, this spectacular show will include Simon’s signature work - Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue - and the dazzling, Brazilian-inspired Bem-Vindo. “This collaboration came about after Simon and I met in Sydney more than a year ago. It wasn’t long before we realised that we both have a passion for not only classical music, but for jazz as well,” Nick explains. “We decided it would be fun to play music together because we both share the same sense of adventure in exploring different styles of music. It’s going to be exciting to see what happens in the performance!” Virtuosi will be the very first time Nick and Simon have collaborated on stage and the performance is set to be explosive! Both artists have recently returned from extended overseas performances tours. Nick is fresh from a performance and research tour of the USA, France and the UK after winning the prestigious “Dame Roma Churchill Fellowship”. Simon just recently got back to Australia after spending some time living and performing in the USA. “Nick Parnell is a complete and utter star.

This thesis contains no material that has been accepted for the award of a higher degree. Ethical approval has been granted for the study presented in this thesis from The University Human Ethics Committee (Sydney Conservatorium Review Committee). Participants were required to read an information document and provided informed consent prior to the collection of data. Signed: Date: 29/12/2017 i Acknowledgments Firstly, thank you Kerrie Biddell for everything. Words do not suffice and you are greatly missed. Your music, your hilarious wit, and your legacy will remain. The honour is mine to have known you. I remember singing God Bless The Child for you in the masterclass section of a vocal jazz workshop in 1992. You were extremely complimentary and also questioned the key. Too high, you felt. I remember it well. Remarkably, I recorded that very song (in a much lower key) and many others, under your guidance twenty-five years later. Thank you for your ongoing influence on my life and work. I would like to thank my son Jacob Alfaro who is my inspiration to constantly move forward.
