    * omslag Dutch Ships in Tropical:DEF 18-08-09 13:30 Pagina 1 dutch ships in tropical waters robert parthesius The end of the 16th century saw Dutch expansion in Asia, as the Dutch East India Company (the VOC) was fast becoming an Asian power, both political and economic. By 1669, the VOC was the richest private company the world had ever seen. This landmark study looks at perhaps the most important tool in the Company’ trading – its ships. In order to reconstruct the complete shipping activities of the VOC, the author created a unique database of the ships’ movements, including frigates and other, hitherto ignored, smaller vessels. Parthesius’s research into the routes and the types of ships in the service of the VOC proves that it was precisely the wide range of types and sizes of vessels that gave the Company the ability to sail – and continue its profitable trade – the year round. Furthermore, it appears that the VOC commanded at least twice the number of ships than earlier historians have ascertained. While not disputing the importance of this widely held notion, the ever-increasing level of the diversity of populations in many cities across the Western World, has diversified ways that new migrant communities can go about building up social capital. Thus, this comparative case study explored how the “super-diverse” context of Zaanstad in the Netherlands influenced how the two fastest growing communities of asylum recipients in the Netherlands, Eritrean and Syrian refugees, have gone about building up their social capital. Their narratives demonstrated the importance of shared identities and its influence on the diversity of their social networks, and the social capital available to them. Other factors that either enabled or hurt the flow of social capital, such as inner-community dynamics, culture, and organized events and language, also came to light. The implications of these findings are numerous, as it implies that a more nuanced approach is needed to study how migrants go about increasing the social capital useful for adapting to a new locale. Lastly, this thesis identifies practical avenues that local policymakers can pursue to help integrate new migrants into their communities. The first keep their nose to the ground, in search for a minute fact buried in the mud. The second float with their head in the clouds, taking in the whole panorama, without seeing too much detail.1 Far be it from me to criticize eminent Frenchmen, but continuing Le Roy Ladurie’s metaphor, I would like to point out that parachutists reach firm ground in the end, although it may be an uncomfortable experience if their parachute fails. And truffle hunters may board aircraft, take off, jump out, and enjoy the view. In short, many historians have both a taste for exquisite morsels and for grand views. On this occasion, I would like to serve you a truffle dish in the form of a recently discovered document, a deposition made to Amsterdam notary Jacobus Westfrisius. The document refers to events that took place in the second decade of the seventeenth century.
