Noahidism Or B'nai Noah—Sons of Noah—Refers To, Arguably, a Family
Noahidism or B’nai Noah—sons of Noah—refers to, arguably, a family of watered–down versions of Orthodox Judaism. A majority of Orthodox Jews, and most members of the broad spectrum of Jewish movements overall, do not proselytize or, borrowing Christian terminology, “evangelize” or “witness.” In the U.S., an even larger number of Jews, as with this writer’s own family of orientation or origin, never affiliated with any Jewish movement. Noahidism may have given some groups of Orthodox Jews a method, arguably an excuse, to bypass the custom of nonconversion. Those Orthodox Jews are, in any event, simply breaking with convention, not with a scriptural ordinance. Although Noahidism is based ,MP3], Tạləmūḏ]תַּלְמּוד ,upon the Talmud (Hebrew “instruction”), not the Bible, the text itself does not explicitly call for a Noahidism per se. Numerous commandments supposedly mandated for the sons of Noah or heathen are considered within the context of a rabbinical conversation. Two only partially overlapping enumerations of seven “precepts” are provided. Furthermore, additional precepts, not incorporated into either list, are mentioned. The frequently referenced “seven laws of the sons of Noah” are, therefore, misleading and, indeed, arithmetically incorrect. By my count, precisely a dozen are specified. Although I, honestly, fail to understand why individuals would self–identify with a faith which labels them as “heathen,” that is their business, not mine. Acta Poloniae Historica 103, 2011 PL ISSN 0001–6892 Marek Kornat THE POLISH IDEA OF ‘THE THIRD EUROPE’ (1937–1938): A REALISTIC CONCEPT OR AN EX-POST VISION? The concept of ‘the Third Europe’ – or ‘the Intermarium Bloc’ – was certainly an interesting political project invented by the Polish Foreign Minister Józef Beck in the years 1937–8. It was bold and ambitious, but quite controversial, therefore it was merely mentioned in many works devoted to the foreign policy of the interwar Poland. There can be no doubt today that without a careful analysis of the assumptions of this concept, it is impossible to grasp the real meaning of the Polish ‘policy of balance’ between Nazi Germany and the Stalinist Soviet Union, as well as the way of thinking of the Polish leaders about international affairs towards the end of the 1930s. The idea of concentrating the smaller states of East-Central Europe around Poland was one of the most essential and independent politi- cal concepts of Beck, although, quite naturally, it referred to various similar ideas put forward by Polish political thought and in the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs from the dawn of Poland’s independence. Had this project any real basis in the political reality of the Europe of the 1930s? What was its essence? What were its concrete pros- pects? What aims did Józef Beck connect with it – who was regarded, not without reason, as a fi rm adherent of bilateralism in international relations and a critic of the concept of ‘bloc-building’ as a method of fi nding security? What were the possibilities of Polish diplomacy in the realities of the late 1930s? Was it a real political project, or maybe only a concept described by historians ex post? What determined its failure? The present study is devoted to refl ection upon these questions. -

What can be learned from their actions and how do the lessons relate to you? During the Holocaust, it is estimated that eleven million people were killed by the Nazis and their collaborators. Fortunately, there were many who survived. Many survivors were rescued by “ordinary” people who took extraordinary risks to become an ally. Moral courage is the ability to take a strong stand on a specific issue based on one’s personal beliefs or convictions and to defend it regardless of danger or threats to personal safety. Rescuers during the Holocaust, such as Miep Gies, Carl Lutz, Vladka Mead, Oskar Schindler, Chiune Sugihara, and Raoul Wallenberg, exemplify both courage and moral courage. They displayed courage in their ability to face difficulty, danger, and/or pain without fear; they exhibited moral courage when they acted on their own values and beliefs to spare the lives of others at the risk of jeopardizing their own. Their actions serve as a model of personal triumph over adversity and inspire others to act accordingly. Garscha Achtzig Jahre Ungewissheit Die Nisko-Aktion 1939 und ihre verschollenen Opfer Unmittelbar nach der nationalsozialistischen Machtüberahme und dem Ein- marsch der Deutschen Wehrmacht in Österreich im März 1938 setzten die neuen Machthaber eine gewaltige Welle von Flucht und Vertreibung in Gang: Durch eine Kombination von administrativen Schikanen, öffentlichen Demü- tigungen, staatlich sanktioniertem Raub und physischer Gewalt gelang es den Nationalsozialisten in nicht einmal zwei Jahren, 130.000 ihrer Rechte und ih- res Eigentums beraubte Österreicher und Österreicherinnen dazu zu bewegen, das Land zu verlassen. Der Großteil von ihnen war jüdischen Glaubens, viele waren erst durch die NS-Gesetze zu „Juden“ gemacht worden. Wem die er- forderlichen finanziellen Mittel zur „Auswanderung“ gefehlt hatten oder wem es aus anderen, unterschiedlichsten Gründen – wozu in vielen Fällen auch die moralische Verpflichtung, pflegebedürftige Angehörige nicht im Stich zu las- sen, gehörte – nicht gelungen war, dem nationalsozialistischen Machtbereich zu entkommen, geriet ins Visier der NS-Vernichtungspolitik. Der größte Teil von ihnen wurde zwischen Herbst 1941 und Ende 1942 aus Wien in die Ghettos und Vernichtungslager deportiert. Damit gelang den Nationalsozialisten innerhalb von viereinhalb Jahren die fast völlige Zerstörung einer der bedeutendsten jüdischen Gemeinden Europas: Die Wiener Gemeinde hatte sich durch religiös-kulturelle Vielfalt ausgezeich- net und einen relevanten Faktor der Gesellschaft gebildet.
