    April 15, 2019 Dear Members of the Media, On behalf of the Boston Athletic Association, principal sponsor John Hancock, and all of our sponsors and supporters, we welcome you to the City of Boston and the 123rd running of the Boston Marathon. As the oldest annually contested marathon in the world, the Boston Marathon represents more than a 26.2-mile footrace. The roads from Hopkinton to Boston have served as a beacon for well over a century, bringing those from all backgrounds together to celebrate the pursuit of athletic excellence. From our early beginnings in 1897 through this year’s 123rd running, the Boston Marathon has been an annual tradition that is on full display every April near and far. We hope that all will be able to savor the spirit of the Boston Marathon, regardless whether you are an athlete or volunteer, spectator or member of the media. Race week will surely not disappoint. The race towards Boylston Street will continue to showcase some of the world’s best athletes. Fronting the charge on Marathon Monday will be a quartet of defending champions who persevered through some of the harshest weather conditions in race history twelve months ago. Desiree Linden, the determined and resilient American who snapped a 33-year USA winless streak in the women’s open division, returns with hopes of keeping her crown. Linden has said that last year’s race was the culmination of more than a decade of trying to tame the beast of Boston – a race course that rewards those who are both patient and daring.

    The Women’s Marathon Movement Or, we’ve run a long way, but haven’t we been here before? BY JACQUELINE HANSEN rom the onset, women distance runners have had to forge their own way, not only Fwith very little official support but, in fact, against a great deal of institutionalized resistance. Imagine the loneliness of the long- distance runner—especially female—back in 1918, when Marie Louise Ledru competed in a marathon in France. Or in 1926, when Violet Percy of England clocked 3:40:22. And in 1951, when a “mystery woman in red” from Canada was reported to have competed in the Boston Marathon. A milestone was reached in 1957 with the formation of the Road Runners Club of CourtesyHansen of Jacqueline America (RRCA), a group that vowed to ▲ Jacqueline Hansen participates in give women equal recognition.     Newsletter A Memorable Spring March/April 2014 One of our much beloved members, Marilyn Jackson, partner of Regina Robinson, passed away on March 6 from breast cancer. Marilyn was Newcomer of the Year in 2011 and received a special club award in 2012: “Guts, Courage, and Hope”, acknowledging her courageous fight as well as her loving and kind spirit. The funeral service was held on 3/15 at the Hope in Christ Community Church in Compton with many Frontrunners in attendance Also attending were a large number of Marilyn’s colleagues from Walgreens, where she was known as “Action Jackson” for being the queen of getting-it-done. Your board of directors is planning an event to remember Marilyn and to raise funds for breast cancer services. Details will be announced shortly. March also saw the LA Marathon, both a big social event and a demanding event for LAFR. Between racing and volunteering, we had 70+ LAFRs participating. We had the usual pasta party, water station, and post-race blow- out. Onward to the Boston Marathon! LAFR Vice President Patrick Owen married his partner Norman Dixon! LAFR President Angus Kennedy was one of the officients. We are proud to report that Angus’s voice quivered only once. The wedding took place in Elysian Park on one of the hottest days in March, where many LAFR members partook in the festivities.     Out of the bushes, ahead of the ambulance, and into the spotlight: milestones in the history of women’s (mostly distance) running, Part I BY CHARLES HOWE 1896 Stamata Rovithi, an impoverished 35-year-old mother who had lost one of her two children the April 11 preceding January, attempts to enter the first Olympic Marathon, but women are not allowed, and her application is rejected. Instead, Rovithi runs the marathon course the day after the official race. Departing from Marathon in the morning, she arrives at the outskirts of Athens 5½ hours later. Along the way, she had stopped to watch the ships sail by. 1926 Briton Violet Percy runs a marathon in London, from Windsor to Chiswick, in 3:40:22. October 3 Authoritative information is scant, and the performance is still regarded with some skepticism, however, this is often given as the first world marathon best for women. 1928 Under pressure from the Fédération Sportive Féminine Internationale (FSFI), women’s athletic events are included for the first time at the Olympic Games in Amsterdam: the 100 meter dash, 800 meter run, 4 x 100 meter relay, high jump, and discus throw. After the 800 meters, several competitors lay down on the grass in exhaustion from the intense heat, and require assistance. Reflecting the appropriate dismay of respectable society at this unsightly display, antifeminist elements of the press seize on the incident as evidence of the unfitness of women for endurance events; for instance, the London Daily Mail quotes doctors who claim that races over 800 meters could cause premature aging.
