Press Release
PRESS RELEASE For Immediate Release Contact: Mark Winitz Win-It!z Sports Public Relations Tel: (650) 948-0618 POOL AND MEYER WIN KAISER PERMANENTE NAPA VALLEY MARATHON Fast Times and Personal Records Abound NAPA, Calif. — March 3, 2013 — Kevin Pool of Folsom, Calif. didn’t plan on winning today’s 35th Annual Kaiser Permanente Napa Valley Marathon. He entered the 26.2-mile race through the scenic Napa Valley wine-growing region as a training run in preparation for this coming April’s Boston Marathon. On the other hand, San Francisco’s Michelle Meyer set a goal of recording a fast time, and possibly a women’s win, at Napa. Both Pool and Meyer emerged victorious in close contests and were crowned Road Runners Club of America national marathon champions. The marathon served as Road Runners Club of America’s 2013 National Marathon Championship. Pool, 30, broke the finish line tape at Napa’s Vintage High School in 2 hours, 21 minutes, and 58 seconds, the seventh fastest winning men’s time in the 35-year history of the event. Meyer’s time of 2:43:11 is the fourth fastest ever by a woman on the scenic, gently rolling, point- to-point course. The rural race route from Calistoga to Napa has not changed since the event’s inaugural running. Pool, a veteran of nine previous marathons, notched his victory despite giving the other top men in the field an unintentional 40-second handicap. He was in the port-a-potty when the 7 a.m. starting gun sounded as Cheyne Inman (Vacaville, Calif.) assumed a solo early lead and held it until Pool and Frank Corrigan (Port Costa, Calif.) caught him near the 23 mile point. -

A Long Time Coming: Running Through the Women's Marathon
Rich’s Book Review A Long Time Coming: Running Through the Women’s Marathon Revolution BY JACQUELINE HANSEN There is a snide remark that gets passed around between many of the running veterans when speaking of the new wave of runners. “They think running was invented the day their took their first run.” Meaning, simply, that many of the new runners have no appreciation of the history of the sport. And considering the lack of emphasis on history in the public schools today, we should not be surprised. Yet running is the sport/occupation that has allowed us to be here today. Our very ancient ancestors ran from the saber-tooth tiger to avoid being eaten, and ran down the wooly mammoth to get something to eat. And, as marathoners, we can trace our sport back more than 2500 years. Yet one of the greatest revolutions in running is, relative to the marathon, virtually brand new. And that, of course, is the involvement of women in running. A revolution that regularly sees more females entered in some races than males. In 2012 female runners heralded the 40th anniversary of the first time the Boston Marathon offered a female division and of Title IX. Races across the country held special celebrations where they lured some of the female pioneers out of the shadows so they could have a spotlight shined on them; other female pioneers were already front-and-center. Over the past several years we have enjoyed a steady release of autobiographies by female running pioneers. Two that stand out are Kathrine Switzer’s Marathon Woman and Lorraine Moller’s On the Wings of Mercury. -

Newsletter a Memorable Spring March/April 2014 One of Our Much Beloved Members, Marilyn Jackson, Partner of Regina Robinson, Passed Away on March 6 from Breast Cancer
Newsletter A Memorable Spring March/April 2014 One of our much beloved members, Marilyn Jackson, partner of Regina Robinson, passed away on March 6 from breast cancer. Marilyn was Newcomer of the Year in 2011 and received a special club award in 2012: “Guts, Courage, and Hope”, acknowledging her courageous fight as well as her loving and kind spirit. The funeral service was held on 3/15 at the Hope in Christ Community Church in Compton with many Frontrunners in attendance Also attending were a large number of Marilyn’s colleagues from Walgreens, where she was known as “Action Jackson” for being the queen of getting-it-done. Your board of directors is planning an event to remember Marilyn and to raise funds for breast cancer services. Details will be announced shortly. March also saw the LA Marathon, both a big social event and a demanding event for LAFR. Between racing and volunteering, we had 70+ LAFRs participating. We had the usual pasta party, water station, and post-race blow- out. Onward to the Boston Marathon! LAFR Vice President Patrick Owen married his partner Norman Dixon! LAFR President Angus Kennedy was one of the officients. We are proud to report that Angus’s voice quivered only once. The wedding took place in Elysian Park on one of the hottest days in March, where many LAFR members partook in the festivities.
