SANTIAGO

CURRENCY

Since 1975, the monetary unit of Chile is the Chilean , with coins equivalent to 10, 50, 100 and 500 , and also 1,000, 2,000, 5,000, 10,000 and 20,000.

In the cities of Chile it is possible to find ATMs that allows withdrawing money in the local . At the same time, a large part of the established stores allow to pay with international bank cards.

The change of currency must be made at airports and exchange bureau. You should never change money in places other than those suggested. In the city it is required to have Chilean pesos.

ENTRANCE TO CHILE

To enter to Chile, you must present your identification documents as an card or passport, and depending on your country of origin, you might need a visa stamped.

The citizens of South America, the European Union, the United States of America, and Australia do not need a tourist visa. However, some countries must pay a cash fee (reciprocity tax) upon arrival at the airport in Chile, like Australia.

AGRICULTURAL AND LIVESTOCK SERVICE (SAG)

If you bring products of animal or vegetable origin, upon entering Chile you must declare them before the SAG (Chilean Agricultural and Livestock Service), in this way you will be contributing to protect flora and fauna of the country.

AIRPORT TRANSPORTATION

Transvip (www.transvip.cl) is a safe and convenient transfer company that makes trips from the airport to the door of your accommodation and vice versa. From two people it is also convenient to take a taxi. The airport buses (www.centropuerto.cl www.turbus.cl) (with a rate of 3,200 pesos round trip) depart every 1015 minutes from the Santiago airport to downtown in front of Los Héroes metro station and vice versa.

It is important to arrive at least two (2) hours in advance to the airport for international flights after online checkin.

TIME ZONE

UTC/GMT minus 3 hours. This means that most Central European countries including Spain have 4 hours difference with Chile between the end of October and the end of March and 5 hours during European summer time.

TIPS

Tips are not always included in the consumption expenses of all restaurants and it is suggested to be included when paying the bill. The tip it should be around 10% of the total consumption depending on the service.

TRANSPORT

Taxis Taking a taxi in Chile is safe and relatively cheap. They are black roofed yellow vehicles that take passengers anywhere. In Santiago, there is a base rate of 300 pesos (USD 0.50) plus around 130 pesos for every 200 mt of distance traveled (or per minute of waiting). The rates are indicated on the windshield, and the taximeter must always be in view of the passenger. For longer distances or to places outside the city, it is recommended to negotiate a price with the driver beforehand.

Metro (www.metro.cl)

Santiago Metro is fast, clean and safe, with modern trains, the network currently has six lines and one more is under construction. Its operating hours are from 6 to 23 hrs. (Varies on weekends)

Depending on the time of the day, the ticket has a value between 650 and 740 pesos. It is recommended to buy a prepaid Bip card!. Since 2007, the transfer to urban buses is also allowed, using the same prepaid card.

The metro of Santiago does not have fixed schedules for each trip; trains usually run every 2 or 3 minutes.

ELECTRICITY

In Chile the common voltage is 220 V. The frequency is 50 Hz. The plugs and sockets are of type C/L. In the following pictures you can see the types of plugs (plugs and sockets).
