Landmarks Preservation Commission October 30, 2007, Designation List No. 397 LP-2246 MANHATTAN HOUSE, 200 East 66th Street, Manhattan (aka 200-260 East 66th Street, 201-257 East 65th Street, 1241-1259 Second Avenue, 1111-1129 Third Avenue), Manhattan. Built 1947-51, Mayer & Whittlesey and Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, associated architects. Landmark Site: Borough of Manhattan, Tax Map Block 1420, Lot 1. On April 10, 2007, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a Landmark of 200 East 66th Street and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site (Item No. 12). The hearing had been duly advertised in accordance with provisions of law. Thirteen people spoke in favor of designation, including City Council member Daniel Garodnick, State Senator Liz Krueger, and representatives of State Assembly member Jonathan L. Bing, Docomomo US / New York Tri-State, the Historic Districts Council, Friends of the Upper East Side, Landmarks Conservancy, Modern Architecture Working Group, Municipal Art Society, as well as tenants in the building. The Commission has also received numerous letters in support of designation. Summary Manhattan House, an Upper East Side apartment and retail complex, was constructed between 1947 and 1951. Commissioned by the New York Life Insurance Company, it occupies an entire block, bounded by East 65th Street and East 66th Street, Second Avenue and Third Avenue. Designed by Mayer & Whittlesey and Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, associated architects, this modern-style apartment house has as many as 21 floors and is notable for its impressive size, plan, massing and color. Considered by many writers to be the first white brick apartment building, it was also notable for being one of the first multiple dwellings in New York City to attempt “an indoor-outdoor synthesis” through the integration of large windows and deep projecting balconies, as well as landscaped driveways and a block-long rear garden enclosed by a low granite wall. -

INDIVIDUAL INTERVIEW The Reminiscences of Norval White © 2006 New York Preservation Archive Project PREFACE The following oral history is the result of a recorded interview with Norval White conducted by an unknown Interviewer on April 20, 2006. This interview is part of the New York Preservation Archive’s Project’s collection of individual oral history interviews. The reader is asked to bear in mind that s/he is reading a verbatim transcript of the spoken word, rather than written prose. The views expressed in this oral history interview do not necessarily reflect the views of the New York Preservation Archive Project. Architect and writer Norval White was a leader of the Action Group for Better Architecture in New York [AGBANY], which organized protests and lobbying on behalf of Pennsylvania Station when it was facing destruction in 1962 and 1963. In this 2006 interview, White recounts his role as chairman of AGBANY and the roles of many of the prominent individuals involved in AGBANY’s activities. White also addresses his activism in the New York chapter of the American Institute of Architects [AIA] vis-à-vis the controversy over Penn Station and other threats to historic buildings. He then discusses the public hearings leading up to Penn Station’s demolition and the possibility of a conflict of interest between James Felt, the then-chair of the New York City Planning Commission, and his brother Irving Felt, the developer of Madison Square Garden. Near the end of the interview, White discusses his work with Elliott Willensky as co-author of the AIA Guide to New York City and comments on works of modern architecture that have, in his view, fit appropriately into the context of historic neighborhoods in the city. -

Built and designed as a "monumental gateway," an important civic structure as well as a transportation hub, the station became an important part of New York's urban fabric. Its success inspired the United States government to construct the adjacent Farley Post Office as an architectural and functional complement to Penn Station. By 1963, changing economic conditions and the evolving nature of passenger transportation prompted the Pennsylvania Railroad to announce plans to sell development rights on the Penn Station site. -

The battle was launched in a pair of exhibitions, each presenting its own view of Chicago's architectural history. In one, 100 Years of Architecture in Chicago, Mies and his followers were presented as the legitimate and sole heir of the renown first Chicago School, a popularly held view that had the support and validation of respected historians such as Sigfried Giedion and Nicholas Pevsner. The other more catholic exhibition, Chicago Architects, sought to explode the exclusive view of the first exhibition to include many architects who had long been forgotten or deliberately excluded. This revisionist point of view was organized and presented by several disparate architects, soon to become known as the Chicago Seven, and documented in the exhibition's catalog written by Stuart Cohen. -

Durham, F AIA, President, The American Institute of Architects, to the annual conven tion of the California Council of AIA, at San Diego, Calif., Oct. 6, 1967, he said: "There is hope, that we approach our new road junction in housing armed with workable design ideas to improve our environment, and with the skills and talent to put these ideas into effect. This map includes over 150 postwar buildings, landscapes, and infrastructures built in Manhattan between 1930 and 1980. Some of them are already designated as New York City Landmarks. Manhattan The majority, recognized by local and national preservation organiza- tions as significant, have not been yet been singled out for protection in a formal designation process. Architecture for Community and Spectacle: The Roofed Arena in North America, 1853-1968 Abstract This dissertation provides the first treatment of the origins and development of the roofed arena in the United States and Canada. Supported by archival resources of graphics and text, and informed by direct contact with arena architects, design and operations staff, this study examines the arena as a place for spectacle within the larger environments of city and campus. The arena's site, massing, and design revealed the expectations of its sponsorship. The arena's internal configuration of roofed seating bowl, floor, portals, and passages was a purposeful arrangement intended to accommodate attendees and manage their movement through architectural space. The first chapter focuses on the transmission to the nineteenth century, via the architecture of theater, circus, and other spaces of public assembly, of the Greek and Roman hippodrome oval for accommodation of multiple kinds of revenue-generating activities situated within a circular, elliptical, or rectilinear seating bowl.
