Bob Schickert WMA Marathon Sub Committee May 15 2018 5 Master pieces NEWS FROM EAST BURWOOD Inaugral Hawley Thomas Memorial Relay Hawley Thomas was a great supporter of masters athletics both at East Burwood and the VMA. We thus thought it was appropriate to organize an event in his memory. He preferred distance running so we settled for a 3 x 2,000 metre relay. The first one recently held was a great success. Croydon had the winning women’s team with Tania Neale, Jessica Dux and Pam Tindal. Home ground advan- tage helped East Burwood to be the men’s winners with Stephen Day, Christopher Worsnop and Paul Earle. The Thomas family fielded six runners aged 13 to 54 with granddaughter Kirsten Thomas (18) running 8:37, shading the first masters athlete Pam Tindal who was the fastest masters woman in 8:40. Jessica Dux was second in 9:11, and Michelle Quan (Knox) was third in 9:27. Andrew Egginton (Croydon) was the fastest in 6:57 with Gary Zuccala (Doncaster) second in 7:15, and a Thomas grandson Braden Halemoulis (18), third in 7:32. Grant Murfett (Croydon) was third masters athlete in 7:52. East Burwood 4 km Age Graded Championship It was a cold, windy and wet September night for this race. There was no sign of Spring despite the venue having a special yellow night to try to entice some warmer weather. It was a close race between Geoff Wheeler and Christopher Worsnop. Geoff took off quickly in the first lap leaving Worsnop about 30 metres behind. They both steadied and ran the next four laps at an even pace with the gap unchanged. Worsnop picked up the pace in the second half and had caught Geoff with two laps left. They ran together for a lap, then Worsnop finished strongly just ahead in 19:30, with Geoff at 19:45. However being age adjusted, and being two years older, Geoff got the gold medal by less than 1 %. Doug Orr Heats In preparation for the Doug Orr Intervenue Final, east Burwood have a series of heats over the 880 yards with each runner handicap themselves in the same way as the final. Those running 4.00 seconds or more faster than their nominated time are disqualified. Quite a few have been struggling with this, but Ros Lord- ing has run superbly and consistently to win every heat so far. She ran 3:11 in the first heat. The streak ended in Farah's final championship track race, when he finished second to Ethiopia's Muktar Edris in the metres final. In recent years Farah has faced numerous allegations of doping. On the track, he mostly competed over metres and 10, metresbut has run competitively from metres to the marathon. Inhe indicated his intention to switch wholly to road racing following victory at his final track race, the IAAF Diamond League metres final. His running style has been described as "bouncy" and tactical, [11] [12] which he has attempted to alter for a more efficient and energy-saving stride pattern, especially in the longer distances. • Well Done, Elaine!
Well Done, Elaine! A fine season by Jamaica's Elaine Thompson-Herah has gotten the acclaim it deserves, with her selection to the top five nominees for the prestigious Female World Athlete of the Year. With four wind legal sub-11 clockings for the 100 metres in 2020, Thompson-Herah reached two other important landmarks as she tuned up for the rescheduled Tokyo Olympics. Her four fast 100 metres races - 10.88 seconds on August 8; 10.92 on the 22; 10.85 in Rome to take the world lead on September 17 and a season ending 10.87 in Doha on September 25 - pushed her career sub-11 total to 34. Only six other women have broken the 11 second barrier more often. The top three on that list are all Jamaicans - Merlene Ottey with 67 sub-11 times, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce on 54 and Veronica Campbell-Brown on 49. Elaine's Rome race put her level with East Germany's 1983 World Champion Marlies Gohr on 33. The tie was broken in Doha a week later. When you add her wind-aided 10.73 seconds time done at Jamaica College on July 25, her undefeated 100 metre season looks even better. 2020 is also the sixth consecutive season in which the 2016 double Olympic champion has broken 11 seconds. Given the pain she has endured due to Achilles tendon trouble, her consistency is noteworthy. In fact, only three other women – Fraser-Pryce, young American Sha'Carri Richardson and Bahamian wonder Shaunae Miller-Uibo - ran under 11 seconds all year.

  • Effects of One-Hour Road Running and Shoe on Tibial Accelerations in Recreational Runners
38th International Society of Biomechanics in Sport Conference, Physical conference cancelled, Online Activities: July 20-24, 2020 EFFECTS OF ONE-HOUR ROAD RUNNING AND SHOE ON TIBIAL ACCELERATIONS IN RECREATIONAL RUNNERS Cédric YM Morio1, Sébastien Garcia1 and Nicolas Flores1 Movement Sciences, Decathlon SportsLab, Villeneuve d’Ascq, France1 The purpose of this study was twofold. Firstly, we evaluated the effect of one-hour running on tibial acceleration parameters. Secondly, we determined whether the shoe fatigue after one-hour running would influence these tibial acceleration parameters. Ten runners ran at a constant preferred speed with a standard running shoe. They also ran one bout of 5 min with another identical but fresh running shoe before and after the one- hour run. Tibial acceleration amplitudes and wavelet analyses demonstrated a significant reduction of the tibial impact parameters after one-hour running, but no significant shoe effect. These reductions could be attributable to the slight increase in stride frequency from the beginning to the end of the one-hour running. Noteworthy, the tibial acceleration reduction was observable along the anteroposterior axis, not along the vertical axis. Considering the tibial acceleration as a potential risk factor for developing running-related injuries, these parameters did not change in a harmful way after one-hour of running at the preferred running speed. The shoe modification during the one-hour run did not seem to influence running biomechanics. KEYWORDS: Running, Footwear, Fatigue, Tibial acceleration, Time-frequency analysis INTRODUCTION: Tibial acceleration is a common measurement of shocks during sports activity, especially during running. It has been previously proposed as a surrogate measurement of the loading applied to a runner’s skeleton (Sheerin et al.

Historians have analyzed sports to understand central facets of this intersection, including race, gender, nationalism, assimilation, and resistance. But running, specifically, embodies what was both indigenous and modern, a symbol of both racial and national worth at a time when those categories coexisted uneasily. The narrative follows one main case study: the “Redwood Highway Indian Marathon,” a 480-mile footrace from San Francisco, California, to Grants Pass, Oregon, contested between Native Americans from Northern California and New Mexico in 1927 and 1928.
