January 1 after 35 years as Ex- plorer A.D. Conboy, 53, graduated from La Salle in 1950. He retired from the U.S. Army with the rank of lieutenant colonel after 20 years service. A veteran of three wars (WW II, Korea and Vietnam), Conboy served on the ROTC staff at La Salle from 1960-64. Conboy was a member of St. Joseph's Prep's last city champion- ship football team in 1939. After three years of World War II service in Europe, Conboy enrolled at Georgetown where he played football for two years before transferring to La Salle. He was assistant football coach at St. Joseph's Prep from 1948 to 1950. He also coached Army football and basketball teams in Europe and Hawaii and organized a triathlon team at La Salle which produced three former members of the U.S. Army modern .pentathlon team — Don Walheim, Bill Conroy and Gary McNulty. Conboy is the current president of the East Coast Conference

and is also a member of the NCAA Division 1 Basketball Com- mittee. Conboy, who holds an M.B.A. degree in Industrial Management from , resides in Drexel Hill, Pa. with his wife, Anne, and four children.

JOSEPH F. O'DONNELL Assistant Athletic Director Joseph F. O'Donnell was ap- pointed assistant A.D. and co- ordinator of Hayman Hall, the college's $4.0 million physical recreation in March of 1972. A 1965 graduate of La Salle with a B.A. in economics, O'Don- _ nell taught social studies at Father ^ Judge, his high school alma mater, ^flMf y r -Jfci'g^fc from 1965-70. During the latter period, O'Donnell coached the school's soccer squad and was credited with developing 28 All- Catholic players, four of whom achieved All-Scholastic honors, and one All-America status. In 1970-71 O'Donnell moved to a full-time position with the City of Philadelphia as recreation leader at the Jardel Center. He was a member of the Department of Recreation Soccer Committee, and also assisted Bill Wilkinson with the 1970 Explorer soccer team which posted the first winning season in the college's history. O'Donnell, 31, and his wife, Marie, reside in Jenkintown. PAUL W. WESTHEAD Head Basketball Coach

La Salle College basketball coach Paul W. Westhead, 38, has established himself as one of the better strategists in the game today and currently ranks as the second winningest coach in La Salle history. Westhead who is entering his eighth season at the helm of Explorers, has a career record of 109-80 (.577). He trails only Leonard Tanseer, who coach- ed La Salle for eight years (134-41) in longevity. Westhead's 1976-77 squad, composed of six freshmen, two sophomores, three juniors, and one senior compiled a 17-12 record and finished second in the ECC playoffs. In 1974-75 Westhead was named District 2 "Coach of the Year" by the National Association of Basketball Coaches. His 1974-75 squad dropped its final game, an 87-83 overtime heartbreaker to Syracuse in NCAA first round action, but still enjoyed one of the most satisfying campaigns in La Salle's history with a 22-7 record and four major championships. During that season Westhead guided a predominantly young club (only one senior) to 11 straight victories at one and wins in 16 of its first 17 games. At mid-season the Explorers were seventh in the national rankings. They won the Dayton Invitational, the Sugar Bowl Classic, Philadelphia's prestig- ious Big Five title, and the East Coast Conference Championship. Westhead made his Explorer debut in 1970-71 by capturing 20 of 27 contests, upsetting NCAA semifinalists Western Ken- tucky and Villanova, and participating in the NIT. Westhead began his coaching career at Cheltenham High in 1964, gradually building a winning tradition, which culminated in the suburban Philadelphia school's first appearance ever in the

P. I. A. A. state finals in 1968. From 1968 to 1970, Westhead served as assistant athletic di- rector at St. Joseph's College, and coached the 1969-70 Hawk freshmen to an unparalleled 21-2 season. The Explorer coach added some additional credits during the summer of 1972 when he coached the Santurce team of the Puerto Rican 'Superior' league to a first place regular season finish. In the following manner, Westhead visited Bahia, Brazil to stage a court clinic as part of the state department's 'Partners of the Ameri- ca's' exchange program. Westhead has now coached in the Puerto Rican League for the past six years, and each of his teams, including his 1977 entry, Caguas, has won at least 20 games. Westhead, who was born on February 21, 1939 in Darby, Pa., played high school basketball at West Catholic High School (Phila., Pa.) and Malvern Prep (Malvern, Pa.). The scrappy guard played for at St. Joseph's College from 1958-61, and was a member of three NCAA tourna- ment teams, including the 60-61 Hawk quintet which reached the final four. After graduating from St. Joseph's in 1961, Westhead received a master's degree in English from Villanova University in 1963, and has since done some Ph.D. work at Temple University. He has served on the English Department faculties at , Dayton University, St. Joseph's College, and La Salle College, where he presently teaches English Composition. Westhead is also in his third year as the NCAA's District 2 representative on the National Association of Basketball Coaches' Officials Committee. Westhead, his wife Cassie, and four children reside in Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania. Through the seventies with Paul Westhead; random quotes from the coach, English professor, squash player, zen philosopher, and lifetime student of William Shakes- peare.

March 10, 1970 - During his first press conference as La Salle's head coach. . . "What I'm concerning myself with is the type of player I will seek to recruit a young man who is principally a student-athlete. I will not separate one from the other."

November 24, 1971 — Before embarking on a 6-19 season . . . "Like all coaches I'm a perennial optimist. I don't know any other way to think. I expect La Salle to finish 25-0 this year. Then if we lose a game, I expect us to finish 24-1 . A coach who doesn't think before the season he can go 25-0 doesn't belong in coaching. Even coaches who cry a lot, deep inside they think they can win every game."

February 28, 1972 ... "I believe that you can transfer what you learn in basketball. A guy learns to play until there is nothing left in him, hopefully he'll live like that. As a student, a neighbor, with his family, he'll do everything for that moment, whether it's in an academic situation, a social situation, or a basketball situation."

January 3, 1973 . . . "My ultimate responsibility (as a coach) is to feel that I have been able to get the maximum effort and involve- ment from my players . . . that they have extended themselves to the limit. Often this results in winning but if it doesn't, it's still worth the trip.

February 23, 1974 - Describing a fast break, and borrowing from his favorite scribe's MACBETH (Act I, Scene VII) ...

"If it were done when 'tis done ' Then, 'twere well it was done quickly."

December 24, 1975 - Borrowing a Robert Frost quotation to describe La Salle's one home date in a stretch of ten games . . . "It's a momentary stay against confusion."

February 17, 1976 "Officiating is an impossible task. If officials could make all the calls they had to, they would be more competent than the players. I don't even think computers could do the job 100%. There would be times when the machine would click-click and then tilt."

January 28, 1977 After receiving a new four year contract at

La Salle . . . "Coaching may be one of the last frontiers alive. We really have no stability except our own personal beliefs in basket- ball. Beyond that, there is almost nothing.

"When I say the profession is a last frontier, I mean it in a very

exciting way. Coaches are placed in a very extraordinary position. .

. . .It's not like being a stockbroker or insurance man, where if you build up your sales you can expect 3-4 years of good returns. For

us, each game is another trip . . . another one hour and 45 minutes of reality. It's like frozen juice, all pushed together, con centrated.

"I'm probably better at handling the pressures than I was 7-8 years ago . . . learning not to get too jubilant or too distraught, but waiting for the next reality. It's understanding that there are more Indians over the hill. "The dilemna is, a coach associates 90 minutes or so of a game

as his life on the line. A player can say, 'hey, I had a bad game.' A coach gives his life for that same game." JOSEPH C. O'CONNOR Assistant Coach Joseph C. O'Connor begins his eighth year as an Explorer - ant coach. The 34 year old mentor with the razor-sharp basketball mind coached the La Salle frosh from 1970-72. His squads complied an overall mark of 34-1 1, highlighted by the 1971-72 team's 20-3 record. O'Connor was no stranger to this kind of success. As coach of Bishop Eustace Prep in South Jersey from 1966-70, O'Connor's impressive coaching log read 78-17, including the New Jersey State Championship in 1969. In the summer of 1976 O'Connor, operating from Caracas, Ve- nezuela, coached the Miranda entry in the Liga Especiale de Ve- nezuela. O'Connor, a 1963 graduate of St. Joseph's College with a bache- lor's degree in history, resides in Westbrook Park, Pa. KEN DURRETT Assistant Coach Ken Durrett, one of the greatest players in La Salle basketball history, begins his first season as an Explorer assistant coach. Durrett, 28, a three time winner of the Big Five's Most Valuable Player Award and a two time selection as MVP of the ECAC and the MAC, ranks second on the all time La Salle scoring list with 1679 points. His 23.1 career

scoring average is the school's highest ever. He also averaged 11.9 rebounds during his tenure. Durrett was selected in the first round of the 1971 NBA player draft by the Cincinatti Royals. A series of knee operations severely curtailed his effectiveness, though, and eventually cut short his NBA career after stints with both the Royals (1971-74) and the (1975). Ken lives with his wife, Anna, and their two children in Cherry Hill, New Jersey.

Significant numerical strength, an exciting nucleus of young yet seasoned talent, and explosive offensive potential foreshadow a suc- cessful 1977-78 campaign for the La Salle College basketball team. Paul Westhead, entering his eighth season at the helm of the Ex- plorers, will have ten returning lettermen from last year's youthful 17-12 squad which finished second in the ECC playoffs, including eight players who started at various points of the '76-77 season. "Our emphasis and our strength will almost certainly lie in our numbers," says Westhead. "We have a cluster of players who are able to perform at different positions, which offers us a great amount of flexibility and maneuverability." "We are going to break from the usual pattern of having one center, two forwards and two guards. Our players are going to assume multiple roles. We have people who at various different times will be playing forward and center, forward and guard, and in some cases maybe even combinations of all three. "This is going to require a diverse sharing of roles and responsibi- lities, and it means that a player is going to be one of five men on the court, but that he won't be strictly a forward, strictly a center, or strictly a guard." No matter where he plays, 6'7" sophomore Michael Brooks, who burst into national prominence a year ago with a spectacular fresh- man season, appears destined for greatness. Last year Brooks set a new La Salle scoring record for first year players with 579 points (19.9 ppg.) and led the Big Five in - ing with 10.7 caroms per game. He was named All Big Five, All ECC, ECC Rookie of the Year, was All Tournament in the Volun- teer and Cabrillo Classics, and made the first teams of both the ECAC and Basketball Weekly All Freshman squads. In short, Brooks is a devastating power forward who does nearly everything well.

Supporting Brooks in the frontcourt will be 6'6" senior Jim Wolkiewicz (6.2 ppg., 4.8 rpg.), a workmanlike, hustling forward whose forte is defense; 6'5" sophomore Reggie Miller (8.6 ppg., 3.9 rpg.), a strong, power forward who was an important sixth man last year; 6'7" sophomore swingman Mark Spain (1.7 ppg.), a shrewd perimeter player; 6'7" sophomore Mo Connolly (1.0 ppg.), the frontcourt's best pure shooter; 6.7" freshman Stan Williams, a powerful rebounder, and 6'5" senior Gregg Metzinger, a two year letterman who did not play last year. The backcourt, which was a problem spot during much of the '76-77 season, may be a strength this year. 6'1" sophomore Darryl Gladden (8.2 ppg.) and 6'0" classmate Kurt Kanaskie (6.5 ppg) meshed well together during the latter part of the campaign and each started the last five games of the season. The additional presence of 6'2" senior Academic All American Tony Di Leo (6.8 ppg.), 6'4" junior Tony Plakis (3.2 ppg.), and 6'0" senior Joe Mihalich (1.2 ppg), who each started at least 11 games a year ago, will insure Westhead of a deep, experienced backcourt. Also challenging for playing time will be freshmen Kevin Lynam, a 6'2" defensive ace; and 5'11" Greg Webster, who played along- side Lynam in the same high school backcourt last year. Westhead appears to have an interesting blend of talent, exper- ience, and depth at his disposal and the overall prognosis indicates that La Salle should be a serious contender for both the Big Five and ECC titles in 1977-78.

COLLEGE WHAT'S SO SPECIAL ABOUT MICHAEL BROOKS. . .

". . . right now, he (Brooks) can be one of the greatest players the Big Five has ever had. The thing he has going for him, his biggest asset, is his desire to excel." - 11/30/77, Widener Head Coach, C. Alan Rowe.

"Michael Brooks, a poised freshman, plays like he invented the game." - Gene Quinn, WILMINGTON MORNING NEWS, 12/9/76.

"Brooks set a new Volunteer Classic record with 71 points in the two games and he is destined to be one of the nation's great college stars over these next four seasons. "The swift, strong Philadelphia youngster is in the same general category of playing ability as (Bernard) King and Ernie (Grunfeld) in their freshman years." - Ben Byrd, KNOXVILLE JOURNAL, 12/20/76.

"He's got to be one of the top freshman talents in the country. We played a lot of defenses against him, and nothing worked, so we did a lot of praying." - Stu Aberdeen, Associate Head Coach, University of Tennessee, 12/20/77.

"Not often do you find a young man as mature, both physi- cally and mentally, as Michael Brooks." — Frank Dolson, PHILA- DELPHIA INQUIRER, 12/28/77.

"I think Mike's greatest asset is . . . he's like a diehard battery. He has such energy. He goes out and electricity is created." — Paul Westhead, Head Basketball Coach, La Salle College, 12/29/76.

"Unprecedented! Michael Brooks, producing solid credentials to earn All America consideration in the not too distant future, leads the Big Five in scoring and rebounding." — Frank Brady, PHILADELPHIA EVENING BULLETIN, 1/3/77.

"Splendid freshman Michael Brooks is indeed something to see." - Skip Myslenski, PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER, 1/4/77.

"Our entire game plan was to try and stop (Donn) Wilber and Brooks, but nobody is going to stop Brooks — he has too much talent." — , Head Basketball Coach, University of Rhode Island, 1/4/77.

"Michael Brooks, La Salle's brilliant freshman forward, flashed All American credentials during a brutal string of road games over the holidays." - Bill Conlin, PHILADELPHIA DAILY NEWS, 1/7/77.

"I think it would be fair to say that Michael had demonstrated early that he has the skills to be one of the five All American players in the country. All signs look like he can fit into that category." - Paul Westhead, Head Basketball Coach, La Salle College, 1/27/77.

"Michael Brooks has been a turn the program around player for the Explorers, averaging 20 points a game in a splendid fresh- man season." - Bill Conlin, PHILADELPHIA DAILY NEWS, 2/8/77.

"The longer you watch a talented individual like him (Brooks), you appreciate the little things he does in addition to the flam- boyance of the points and the board work. You can just see the timing and anticipation." — Stu Aberdeen, Associate Head Coach, University of Tennessee, 12/20/77.

"Brooks likely is destined to be the best drawing card in the Big Five since the days of or ." - Chuck Newman, PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER, 12/21/77. EXPLORER PLAYER PROFILES

MICHAEL ANTHONY BROOKS Sophomore 19 6'7" 205 Forward Philadelphia, Pa.

Michael burst into prominence last year with one of the most spectacular rookie seasons in La Salle College history The precocious forward amassed 579 points to break Tom Gola's La Salle record for points scored in an initial varsity season (504), established in 1951-52. His 19.9 ppg. scoring average placed him second in the Big Five and third in the East Coast Conference in that category and he led the Big Five and was third in the ECC with a 10.7 rebounding average. The above figures, along with an occasional flair for the spectacular, helped Brooks accrue All Big Five, All ECC, and ECC Rookie of the Year honors. He was also named to ECAC and BASKETBALL WEEKLY All Freshmen squads, and was a member of both the Volunteer Classic and the Cabrillo Classic All Tourna- ment teams. Brooks set a new Volunteer Classic scoring record with 71 points in the two game tourney, and scored his career high of 36 points against SMU. Brooks was named as the Outstanding Sportsman of the Cabrillo Classic. The meal ticket rebounder recorded his personal high water mark of 19 rebounds against Widener and Duquesne. Seemingly boundless energy, tremendous overall strength, dynamic jumping ability, and an unwavering desire to improve have helped make Brooks simply an irresistable offensive force. He is primarily an inside, "power" scorer, but he hits the outside jumper frequently enough to keep defenses honest. Brooks

is also a very slick passer and ranked first in La Salle's frontcourt (and third on the squad) with 54 assists last year. Brooks entered La Salle with a trunkload of gaudy statistics and honors which he earned at Philadelphia's West Catholic High School (coach Joe McFadden). Brooks, who captained West Catholic to a 28-5 record in 75-76, led the Catholic League in scoring (27.3 ppg.) and re- bounding (18.2 rpg.) during his senior campaign. He set the school's single game scoring record (46, vs. Monsignor Bonner) and amassed the largest career point total (1651) in West Catholic history. For those deeds Brooks earned first team All City, All Catholic, and All State honors, and was the 1975-76 Catholic League MVP. Michael is a sociology major. Year G FG-FGA PCT. FT FTA PCT. RBDS. Avg. After seeing relatively little playing time in the Explorers' crowded front- court last year. Mo, who is probably La Salle's best pure shooter, may be ready for a more important role this season. Mo is a pure jump shooter with out- standing range and is a dangerous wea- pon against zone defenses, against which he saw most of his action in 1976-77. During the off season Mo undertook a vigorous weight program and has added some needed upper body strength to aid him in the rebounding wars. Mo is a very good "face the basket" player and moves well without the ball. His career high of 6 points was scored against the University of Washington last year. His rebounding best was 4 against Biscayne. Mo attended Philadelphia's Father Judge High School (coach Bill Fox) and as a junior led Judge to a 20-9 record and the Catholic League championship. ANTHONY LEWIS Dl LEO Senior 22 6'2" 165 Guard Cinnaminson, New Jersey Tony, one of three seniors on the 1976-77 La Salle varsity, capped his first full season with the Explorers a year ago with his selection to the first team Academic All America squad. The accounting major had the highest academic average (4.0) on the ten man first team. Tony transferred to La Salle in 1975 after two seasons at Tennessee Tech in Cookeville, Tennessee, where he set a new Tennessee Tech and Ohio Valley Conference single season assist record with 167 during the 1974-75 season. Di Leo started 20 games in the Explorer back- court last year and played in all 29 games. He averaged 6.8 ppg. and led the squad in assists with 105. Di Leo also paced the Explorers in percentage, with a mark of .893 (50-56). His career high of 27 points was accomplished in 1974-75 for Tennessee Tech against both Eastern Kentucky and Murray State. His La Salle high was 19 points against the University of Maine and Ameri- can University. Tony is a reliable ballhandler and lends important on and off the court leadership to the team. A captain and All South Jersey selection in both basketball and at Cinnamin- son High School (basketball coach Tony McDermott), Tony tied the Cinnaminson single game scoring record of 41 points, which was originally set by his brother Frank (who later played for Lafay- ette and the Lancaster Roses in Eastern League).

The jet-quick Gladden, a wheel- ing-dealing point guard, fared well under the late season pressure, and enhanced k\ ^ Wm^^ h ' s re P uTation as a clutch player. Earlier i \ »• ^Bk m the season he had helpea :he Exp!o r - ers nail down victories against West Chester, when he sank a running jump shot from the baseline with time running out, and Villanova, when he calmly deposited 2 free throws with three seconds left to give La Salle a 71-70 victory. Gladden broke a Volunteer Classic assist record with a total of 19 assists (10 vs. Tennessee) in the two day tournament, and finished second on the team for the season with 104. Gladden is a tremendous asset to the Explorers' fast break with his "blind" passing ability and is probably the best La Salle guard at delivering the ball inside. Gladden scored his career high of 16 points against American University. The former All South Jersey and All State performer from John F. Kennedy High School (coach Ken Leary) led his team to two consecutive Burlington County titles and totaled more than 1000 career points. KURT MICHAEL KANASKIE Sophomore 19 6'2" 180 Guard Enola, Pennsylvania

Kurt began the 76-77 season as a deep backcourt reserve and improved so dramatically throughout the course of the season that he started six of the

Explorers' last eight games and he is a leading candidate for a starting berth this season. A pure jump shooter with considerable range, Kanaskie performed like a veteran in several pressure games at the close of the season. He pumped in 16 points against Notre Dame in South Bend, scored 14 points in the Explorers' ECC quartet fin.il victory against Delaware, and notched his career high of 21 to lead La Salle to a 86-80 victory over Lafayette in the ECC semifinal game. Kanaskie's defensive play, particularly in the ECC playoffs, was a major plus and his quick hands often resulted in flurries of steals. Kanaskie played his scholastic ball at Cumberland High School (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) under coach Rob Carrolus where he established new records for most points in a single game (50) and in a season (1800). He was captain of his team. All City, and All State. Kurt is an accounting major.

17 JAMES DAVID WOLKIEWICZ Senior 21 6'6" 185 Forward Philadelphia, Pa.

Jim is the Explorers' most experi- enced frontcourt player. He was a top sub and occasional starter as a freshman on La Salle's 1974-75 NCAA tourna- ment team and has been a regular for the past two seasons. Last year he was the only La Salle player to start every game. Jim is the consummate team player and accomplishes many things during a game which don't show up in the box score. AKI\ He is the Explorers' top defensive player and is especially adept at denying an opponent the ball. He is an unselfish offensive player and an excellent passing forward, a temperament and talent combination which renders him very valuable to a smooth team offense. Wolkiewicz was the hero of the Explorers' 84-77 ECC quarterfinal triumph over Delaware when he blanketed a hot-shooting Delaware forward in the second half. He saved his best scoring effort of the 76-77 season (and his career high) for the ECC championship game against Hofstra, when he pumped in 19 points. His career rebounding high of 13 came during the 75-76 season against both Syracuse and Providence. Jim was the Explorers' third leading shooter from the floor (.500) and second leading free throw shooter (.860) a year ago. Wolkie- wicz was an All Catholic center and team captain at North Cath- olic High School (coach Tony Constatino), where he averaged 16.0 ppg. and 18.0 rpg. He is a finance major.

Jim Wolkiewicz flies in for a score against Providence in 1976-77 action. REVIEW OF THE 1976-77 SEASON

The 1976-77 , composed of six freshmen, two sophomores, three juniors, and only one senior, came close to some prestigious team titles last year, but always fell just a bit short, and had to settle instead for some impressive individual honors. La Salle, operating for the seventh year under head coach Paul Westhead, opened the year with two quick victories over Widener and Vermont and then gave Alabama (ranked sixth nationally at the time) a race to the wire before dropping a five point decision to the eventual NIT semifinals. Three more impressive victories over Delaware, Biscayne, and the University of Maine improved the Explorers' record to 5-1 just prior to their appearance in the Volunteer Classic, in Knoxville, Tennessee. Michael Brooks, the Explorers' precocious 6'7" freshman for- ward, exploded for 35 points, and outplayed Tennessee All Ameri- cans and as the Explorers narrowly missed upsetting the Vols in the tourney opener, eventually falling 92-85. Brooks, who was named All Tournament and set five tour- nament records including most points (71), scored his career high 36 points the following night in the consolation game against SMU as La Salle edged the Mustangs 95-86 for third place. The next stop on the holiday tour was San Diego for the first ever Cabrillo Classic, hosted by San Diego State. The Explorers again drew the host team, but this time the outcome was different as Brooks and 7'0" senior captain Donn Wilber combined for 48 points to lead the Explorers to an 88-84 victory over San Diego State. The championship game against PAC-8 power Washington was never close, however, as the Huskies ran away with a 114-94 decision and the title. The final stop on the six game road swing was Providence, for a date with Rhode Island on January 3. Michael Brooks won his own personal shootout with highly touted freshman star Sly Will- iams by outscoring the URI forward 31-9, but La Salle came out on the short end of a 70-61 score. Despite the poor start at Rhode Island, January proved to be a good month for the Explorers as they captured six of the seven remaining games in the month, including important ECC wins over Drexel and archrival St. Joseph's. Other victories came against Canisius, West Chester, Western Kentucky, and Dickinson, while the lone loss came at the hands of eventual ECBL champion Duquesne by two points. The Explorers opened February with another pair of important victories over Villanova and American University, to make their record 15-5, with 2-0 records in both Big Five and ECC competition. Then the bottom fell out. Beginning with a 93-89 loss at the Palestra to Hofstra, La Salle lost its next six games in succession including defeats to Temple, Niagara, Providence, Penn, and Notre Dame. The Explorers closed the regular season with a 15-11 record and finished tied for third place in the Big Five with a 2-2 record. They qualified for the ECC playoffs with a 3-2 conference record. Delaware was the first draw for La Salle and in a game played at Newark, Wilber, Brooks, and 6-2 freshman guard Kurt Kanaskie keyed an 84-77 win to advance the team into the semifinal round against Lafayette at Easton, Pa. Kanaskie played the game of his career and pumped in 21 points to lead four other Explorers in double figures as La Salle edged the scrappy Lafayette quintet 86-80 to place the team in the ECC championship game against defending champion Hofstra. The La Salle bjbble burst in that final game as Hofstra parlayed its overwhelming edge in experience and the superb 34 point effort of , into a 92 81 victory, the ECC crown, and the auto matic qualifying berth in the NCAA playoffs. Nevertheless, it was a very satisfying year for the Explorers in many respects. Westhead improved his record at La Salle to 109-80 and signed a new four year contract Brooks and Wilber dominated the scoring and rebounding figures all season, set several new re- cords, and accrued a number of honors during and after the season And the entire team set the stage for what should be a successful followup show in 1977 78.

23 BIG FIVE HISTORY mi^^I^m ^V The formation of the Big Five began in 1953, \^^^^^^^j was announced at a press conference on Novem- ^^^^^H^F b er 23, 1954, and inaugurated December 3, 1955 ^ ^^^^^r when La Salle and St. Joseph's hosted Muhlen- berg and Rhode Island, respectively. With five teams (La Salle, Penn, St. Joseph's, Villanova, and Temple) playing in one building (the University of Pennsylvania's Palestra) and sharing expenses and profits evenly, the Big Five has evolved into the most unique basketball program in the country from virtually any standpoint. More than three million people have seen the games at the Palestra during the first 21 years and millions more are regular viewers on local television. Over 140 different opponents have been met over the years and it is a certainty that the Big Five has ad- vanced the cause of college basketball in Philadelphia more than any single team could on its own.

La Salle College, now in its 114th year of service to higher education and the Philadelphia Community, was founded March 20, 1863 by the Brothers of the Christian Schools and derives its name from the founder of the Christian Brothers, St. John Baptist de La Salle. In 1929, having outgrown three previous Philadelphia locations, the campus was moved to its present site at 20th and Olney Avenue in the East Germantown section of the city. Since 1945, La Salle has experienced dramatic growth. Before the closing days of the war, the college had an enrollment of less than 500 attending classes in plant facilities valued at only $1.5 million. Today, more than 6,000 day and evening division students attend classes on La Salle's 50 acre campus, appraised at S30 million. Olney Hall, a $4.4 million, 100,000-square-foot complex opened in September, 1971, contains 39 classrooms, 15 student seminar and study rooms, and 107 faculty offices as well as such special- purpose areas as a planetarium, an amphitheatre, language labora- tories and audio-visual rooms. It houses the liberal arts area de- partments of English, Education, History, Languages, Political Science and Sociology. Hayman Hall, the college's new $4 million physical recreation center which opened in September, 1972, contains the Joseph Kirk Memorial Natatorium with separate swimming and diving facilities, an underwater observation deck, and seats for 1700 spectators. Three regulation-size basketball courts, a one-twelfth mile indoor suspended track, and areas for fencing, wrestling, squash, handball, gymnastics and general exercise are the other features of the complex. Ten modern residence halls accommodate 800 out-of-town students. A $2 million, three-story College Union Building, com- pleted in 1959, includes a Little Theatre as well as dining halls, assembly rooms, ballroom and other student facilities. The $2.5 million Holroyd Science Center, opened in 1960, houses lecture rooms and laboratories for study and research in Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Physics and Psychology. The David Leo Lawrence Memorial Library, built in 1952, contains 190,000 volumes and periodical files for some 700 journals, and a library annex in the former Wister Hall gymnasium opened in January, 1974, increasing library space by 50%. The Army ROTC program, initiated in 1950, is available to freshmen, who may apply for ROTC scholarships for advance studies. La Salle's day and evening divisions offer degree programs in Arts and Sciences and Business Administration. A new MBA. program began in September, 1976. Graduate programs are also offered in theology and education. La Salle initiated Philadelphia's first Weekend College in September, 1975, enabling men and women to take college courses exclusively on Saturdays and Sun- days. La Salle also offers Evening Division courses off campus at Archbishop Ryan High School in Northeast Philadelphia. The 350-member faculty is composed of Christian Brothers, priests and lay professors The college has been co-educational in the evening division since February, 1967 and in its day school since September, 1970. Students at La Salle come from some 200 public and private schools in 21 states, most of them located in the northeastern part of the Fourteen countries are also represented in the student body. Over 75 per cent of them plan graduate work

and about 1 ,000 degrees are conferred annually on day and evening division seniors La Salle's alumni totals 20,000, with more than 80 per cent of them still living and working in the tn state area of Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware. 1
