DeMeester for another insightful analysis. That is the 29 th in a row and it’s a beauty. You can see links to all Paul’s articles at the bottom of webpage http://www.vrwc.org.au/save-the-50km.shtml. MALE WALKERS SUPPORTING WOMEN’S 50K: A QUENTIN-SSENTIAL DUTY By Paul F. DeMeester I know. I misspelled the word “quintessential.” On purpose. The “Quentin-ssential” in the headline is a reference to New Zealand 50K specialist Quentin Rew, a veteran of two Olympics (27th at London 2012 in 3:55:03; 12th at Rio 2016 in 3:49:32) and five World Championships (23rd at Daegu 2011 in 4:08:46; 16th at Moscow 2013 in 3:50:27; 10th at Beijing 2015 in 3:48:48; 11th in London 2017 in 3:46:29; and 11th at Doha 2019 in 4:15:54). Rew has already qualified for Tokyo 2020, having bested the time limit of 3:50:00 by 12 seconds at the Japanese National Championship last year in Wajima. -

HEEL AND TOE ONLINE The official organ of the Victorian Race Walking Club 2020/2021 Number 36 Tuesday 8+ June 2021 VRWC Preferred Supplier of Shoes, clothes and sporting accessories. Address: RUNNERS WORLD, 598 High Street, East Kew, Victoria (Melways 45 G4) Telephone: 03 9817 3503 Hours: Monday to Friday: 9:30am to 5:30pm Saturday: 9:00am to 3:00pm Website: http://www.runnersworld.com.au Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Runners-World/235649459888840 TIM’S WALKER OF THE WEEK My Walker of the Week is VRWC member Rhydian Cowley who has been added to the Australian Olympic team to contest the 50km walk in Japan. He joins Jemima Montag and Dane Bird-Smith who have already been pre-selected for the 20km. Further 20km walk additions are likely to take place when the qualification period for that event finishes on 29 th June. See the announcement at https://www.athletics.com.au/news/marathoners-selected-for-tokyo-2020-australian-olympic-team/. Well done Rhydian on your second Olympics. It is a just reward for all your hard work. I thought the MorelandStar (https://www.facebook.com/morelandstarnews/) summed it all up nicely LOCAL RESIDENT SELECTED FOR THE 2021 OLYMPICS The Australian Olympic Committee announced yesterday that Fawkner resident Rhydian Cowley has been selected for the Tokyo 2021 Olympic Games in the 50km Racewalk. If you walk along the Merri Creek trail, perhaps you’ve seen Rhydian as it’s where he does a lot of his training – particularly during lockdown. In addition to sessions at the gym, he says he walks between 105 to 150 kms per week. -

FRONT COVER: Kirdyapkin races through the Brandenburg Gate on his way to becoming 50k World Champion. PHOTO: by Jeff Salvage ALSO: Scott Davis makes a huge breakthrough in Switzerland. Editorial People all over the world love race walking. It started here, and now reaches into every continent. I often find myself in contact with people in far-off exotic locations. I’ve just recently returned from racing in Switzerland and France. Faces become familiar from race to race abroad, and people eventually introduce themselves and over time become friends. Many readers have told me how they have made long- term friends at overseas events. Several people at the Swiss event turned up six days later at the French event 500 miles away, and supported each other just because they had that one common link. Race Walking is treated slightly differently within each country, but walkers have a huge respect for each other whether they are Olympians or just fitness walkers. UK walkers race abroad in many countries each year, and welcome overseas walkers to events here. This magazine is now sent to readers in twenty different countries, and growing... People queuing behind me at the post office each month really hate me, as I have so many international magazines to send, one-by-one! On my holiday I found the source of the River Danube and ceremoniously set one of my old trainers floating down it. An hour later, the other one was set floating down the River Rhine. (Please don’t litter!) You can’t just throw away something that has brought you so much enjoyment! Am I crazy? Aren’t all race walkers.. -

HEEL AND TOE ONLINE The official organ of the Victorian Race Walking Club 2017/2018 Number 18 30 January 2018 VRWC Preferred Supplier of Shoes, clothes and sporting accessories. Address: RUNNERS WORLD, 598 High Street, East Kew, Victoria (Melways 45 G4) Telephone: 03 9817 3503 Hours: Monday to Friday: 9:30am to 5:30pm Saturday: 9:00am to 3:00pm Website: http://www.runnersworld.com.au Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Runners-World/235649459888840 WALKER OF THE WEEK My Walkers of the Week are Simon Baker and Declan Tingay, but for two very different reasons. • 18 year old Western Australian speedster Declan Tingay recorded a 30 sec PB in the ACT T&F Championships 5000m walk at the AIS Athletics Track in Canberra last Sunday, his time of 19:38.81 only 0.59sec shy of Troy Sundstrom’s Australian Australian U20 5000m track walk record of 19:38.22, set in Sydney in February 2000. So close! Declan has the rest of this year to stage further attacks on this longstanding mark and I am sure further opportunities will arise. To say Declan is a rising talent is an understatement! • 59 year old Victorian Simon Baker was awarded an OAM (Medal of the Order of Australia) in last Friday’s Australia Day Honours List - for services to athetics and racewalking in particular. To try to sumamrise Simon’s many contributions to racewalking in the context of this newsletter is an impossible ask – it would take a separate newsletter edition! So click on this link and read about it for yourself: http://www.vrwc.org.au/tim-archive/articles/wv-simon-baker.pdf. -
Walker of the Week
HEEL AND TOE ONLINE The official organ of the Victorian Race Walking Club 2014/2015 Number 23 10 March 2015 VRWC Preferred Supplier of Shoes, clothes and sporting accessories. Address: RUNNERS WORLD, 598 High Street, East Kew, Victoria (Melways 45 G4) Telephone: 03 9817 3503 Hours : Monday to Friday: 9:30am to 5:30pm Saturday: 9:00am to 3:00pm Website: http://www.runnersworld.com.au Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Runners-World/235649459888840 WALKER OF THE WEEK Alana Barber was my walker of the week two weeks ago and this time around it is fellow Kiwi Quentin Rew who has had a great 3 weeks, culminating in a 4th place finish in the IAAF Challenge Series 50km event in Chihuahua on Saturday. Here is how it all panned out. Quentin (on the right) fights out the third spot finish in the 50km event in Chihuahua on Saturday Two weeks ago, Quentin walked in our Australian Summer 20km championships in Adelaide, coming second to Jared Tallent in a time of 1:25:22. Then it was back to Melbourne for a day before a quick turnaround and a 24 hour flight to Fort Worth, Texas, for the first leg of a 20km/50km double, something that he wanted to test out in preparation for this year's World champs in Beijing. As he couldn't find a suitable 20km walk, he was intending to walk a half marathon as the next best workout. I'll pass onto Quentin now to explain what happened next, via his blog (http://morethanracewalking.blogspot.com.au/). -
Dudinska Patdesiatka Walking Meet, Dudince, Slovakia, Saturday 26 March 2011

Open Men 50 km walk The main event in this meet is always the 50km and, in 2011, it saw nearly 80 entrants, a huge field indeed. Near perfect weather on the Saturday morning meant that big times were on the cards and the walkers did not disappoint. 2010 World Race Walking Cup 50km winner Matej Tóth went in as a clear favourite and he was in a class of his own, delighting the crowd by going to the front immediately and quickly building a convincing lead over the chasing pack. At 40km, he was on target for a time around 3:37 and it was only the strengthening wind in the dying stages of the race which forced him to slow, his final time still a PB and a new Slovakian national record. “It was like I wanted; fast to begin with and then I try to see whether I can keep up the pace. -
