InsideToronto Cardinal McGuigan student leads Toronto's high school track and field medal haul norm nelson June 7, 2011 Toronto collected its share of medals at the provincial high school track and field championships which ran June 2 to 4 at the Laurentian University track in Sudbury - including a couple of double gold medalists. The story of the meet, at least for Toronto, had to be Andre Azonwanna-Ford. from North York's J. Cardinal McGuigan, who not only won two of the more prestigious events - the junior men's 100 and 200m dash - but also obliterated Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) championship records in the process. In fact, his time in the 100m of 10.56 seconds not only broke the old OFSAA record of 10.77 seconds, but it was also 0.22 seconds faster than the senior men's winner on the day. And just to cement his status as the fastest junior racer in the province, his gold medal winning time of 21.40s in the 200m also obliterated the old OFSAA record of 21.72s. Interestingly both of those old junior OFSAA records were set in 2009 by Marlon Laidlaw-Allen of Scarborough's Bendale BTI. Laidlaw-Allen, meanwhile, continued his OFSAA medal haul at the senior men's level, winning the 200m event in 21.25s and scooping a bronze medal in the 400m. Toronto had one other double gold medalist. Elizabeth Whelan, from Branksome Hall, a midtown private school, proved to be unbeatable at the middle distance events in senior women's competition, winning both the 1500m and 800m events. GOLD-SILVER COMBO Toronto also had a couple of other athletes pull off an impressive gold-silver combo, including: - Ben Carson, Leaside High School, midget boys, gold in 1500m and silver in 800m; - Allie Harris, Bishop Strachan (midtown), junior girls, gold in pole vault and silver in 80m hurdles; - Jordan Bates, Richview Collegiate (Etobicoke), junior girls, gold in triple jump and silver in long jump; - and Mackenzie Lemiuex, Humberside Collegiate (Bloor West), midget girls, gold in 3000m and silver in 1500m GOLD MEDALISTS Other gold medalists from Toronto, include: - Dylan Dimock, Father Redmond (Etobicoke), senior men's 400m hurdles; - Christina Kyritsis, East York CI, junior women's, 800m; - Obeng Marfo, Father Henry Carr (Etobicoke), midget women's, shot put; - Anna Laribi, Lawrence Park (midtown), women's wheelchair 800m; http://www.insidetoronto.com/print/1022665[08/06/2011 10:00:09 AM] InsideToronto - Father Henry Carr (Etobicoke), senior men's 4x100m relay; - Mary Ward (Scarborough), senior women's 4x100m relay; - and Father Henry Carr (Etobicoke), open women's 4x400m relay.
