Besides my supervisor, I must thank my mother for her endless encouragement—I dedicate this thesis to her. ABSTRACT In 1932 C. G. Jung (1875-1961) wrote a controversial essay on the famed Spanish artist Pablo Picasso (1881- 1973). Jung’s essay refers to the first ever museum retrospective of Picasso’s work, which was held at the Kunsthaus in Zurich. Jung’s essay appeared in print, on what was the last day of the exhibition in the Neue Zürcher Zeitung, a Swiss, German language daily newspaper which was circulated throughout Zurich. In his essay Jung claimed that Picasso had a ‘schizoid’ personality, and he sought to analyse Picasso’s artwork alongside the pictorial expressions of his patients. Jung’s comments caused an international furore, and criticism was rife over the derogatory nature of his claims. However, Jung’s reception of Picasso was by no means an isolated case in his attitude towards art. It is well known, for instance, that Jung took a dislike to modern art. He confessed in a letter written in 1947 that he was: ‘only prejudiced against all forms of modern art’ finding them ‘mostly morbid and evil.’1 I find Jung’s view of modern art perplexing since he is very open to innovative thought and discovery—which are the hallmarks of modern art movements. Indeed, Jung is regarded as one of the greatest explorers of the human mind, and he was committed to seeking forms of inspiration from beyond conventional ‘scientific’ boundaries. Modern art parallels Jung’s interests: it embraces the spirit of experimentation, and uses new imagery and techniques in order to challenge creative conceptions. On the surface one would assume therefore that Jung would have been keen to build a fruitful relationship with modern artists and modern art movements. But, instead, Jung seems to express a striking prejudice towards modern art. In my study I explore the nature and extent of this seeming prejudice and possible reasons for it. Jung’s relationship with art has been relatively overlooked. Jung was a keen collector of art and artefacts and was himself a competent artist. Ulrich Hoerni, Jung’s grandson and co-editor of The Art of C.G. Jung (2018),2 recently confirmed that for decades few people were aware of the significant role art played in Jung’s life. Furthermore, Jung’s understanding of artistic expression was influenced by the creation of his own collection of paintings. We also find, between 1913-1930, that Jung conducted a self-experiment known as his ‘confrontation with the unconscious,’ the results of which he recorded in written text, drawings and paintings. Jung engaged in a lengthy process of psychological development before transferring these writings and images into the book, Liber Novus. The book was bound in red leather and contained several of Jung’s elaborate and highly finished paintings. Jung’s book has since then always been known as the Red Book. Significantly, Jung’s choice of medium to express his profound experiences brings to light his deeply personal relationship with art and artistic forms of expression. Jung’s intense reaction to Picasso’s art therefore reveals the complexity of his own creative life in relation to art. My study seeks to address and provide important context to Jung’s understanding of modern art. In addition to exploring 1 C.G. Norton & Company, New York/London, 2018 possible reasons for Jung’s apparent prejudice towards modern art, I will address the impact that Jung’s unwillingness to engage in a deeper exploration of modern artforms had on the development of his psychological ideas. In responding to these questions, I hope to show that Jung the ‘artist’ had more to say than he explicitly said in his writings. The first part briefly introduces the narrative of the Book of Job as an example to contextualise how the ultimate question of God’s relation to evil remained unanswered and was left open-ended in Christian theology. The second part offers a historical reconstruction of the unresolved polemic over the nature of evil between Carl Jung and the English Dominican scholar and theologian Victor White (1902-1960).     THE CHILD ANALYTIC TRADITION OF THE SOCIETY OF ANALYTICAL PSYCHOLOGY – BIRTH, DEATH AND BEYOND MELISSA JANE MIDGEN A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the University of East London for the degree of Professional Doctorate in Child Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy December 2016 i Abstract This thesis seeks to chart the creation, development and eventual demise of the child analytic training of The Society of Analytical Psychology (SAP), the foremost Jungian Society in the UK. The brainchild of the Society’s founding director, Michael Fordham, the creation of the child training drew on the talents and persistence of many committed individuals. Through oral history interviews and archival research I weave together a narrative that will serve as testament to this achievement and offer first hand recollections for posterity. Through these sources the narrative also explores the difficulties that the training faced and which ultimately led to its eventual demise. Additionally I interrogate the current status of this tradition of child analysis and ask the question whether or not the tradition continues to exist and if so in what ways; I conclude that currently the tradition can only be said to exist in an attenuated form and that the future is bleak. In the course of the thesis I locate the SAP training within the development more generally of child analytic provision within the UK, the relationship of that to the child guidance movement and to the psychoanalytic diaspora, which made it possible. I describe the current obstacles faced by the child psychotherapy discipline as well as psychoanalytic psychotherapy in the NHS.

Wow, I really liked this - the first half was very informative, and quite helpful in understanding the concepts she is expounding on, but appropriately simple, and the second half - which is really a seperate work - is the interpretation of one particularly meaningful dream - in a beautifully composed and deeply touching way - a very good read. As well, Complex/ Archetype/ Symbol in the Psychology of C.G. Jung first two people function as each other's anima and animustheir romantic love serving to make each other psychologically complete. The mother, we know, frequently knows right away, consciously or psychically, that she is now pregnant. One person found this helpful. That is why it lies ready to hand in the unconscious of every man. In the Jungian perspective, therefore, the essence of the complex includes its autonomous psychic existence separate from consciousness and a feeling charge which exerts influence on consciousness. On the contrary, it continues vigorously during the first years of life into adolescence and probably beyond. Jacobi, The Psychology of C. Ken Wilber developed a theory called Spectrum of Consciousness, which expanded the Jungian archetypes.

    From Primitive Mentality to haecceity: the Unique Case in astrology and divination Geoffrey Cornelius Part I The question before us is the nature of divinatory intelligence,1 which is the mode of thought whereby meaningful interpretations are sustained in divination. This paper supports the view of some anthropologists that divination involves a distinctive mode of consciousness, mental pattern or cognitive faculty. To this end, I bring forward what may seem at first to be an unlikely combination of descriptions from anthropology and scholastic philosophy. Part I reviews Lucien Lévy-Bruhl's description of 'primitive mentality', in order to establish a characteristic of divinatory interpretation that I have termed the unique case. In Part II I suggest that the unique case parallels the concept of haecceitas (anglicised as haecceity or 'this-ness') posited by the medieval theologian John Duns Scotus. This concept is dependent on his distinction between intuitive and abstractive cognition; this pairing indicates a foundational analysis that may be fruitfully applied beyond its original context to the question of omens, astrology and divination. At the same time, this approach complements the anthropological perspective by suggesting a loftier intellectual register for divination than is usually granted to it by contemporary scholarship. Astrology is considered here in the practical and applied form in which it is most commonly encountered, which is as a method of judgment and interpretation, and this is treated as a practice of divination. Beyond its explicitly divinatory manifestation astrology raises complex questions in that it has from its origins encompassed cosmology, sacred science and pre-modern psychology.

    IAJS/ Duquesne University Conference, March 18-21, 2021 Authors and Abstracts Apocalypse Imminent: A depth psychological analysis of human responses to fear of catastrophe and extinction. J. Alvin and E. Hanley In the dire situation of the world today, humans are striving to cope with impending catastrophes and end of life on Earth. Emergency food buckets with a shelf life of 25 years are now sold in quantities that provide a year of lasting sustenance for an individual. Efforts to colonize Mars are underway and its pop-culture representations are based on key narratives of American heritage: ingenuity/technology, the great frontier/utopia, and democracy/capitalism. The configuration of apocalyptic social phenomena, arranged in a cultural and astrological gestalt, may be reminiscent of other points in human history where the threat of catastrophe rendered similar archetypal expression. As psychologists, we must ask: what precisely is being achieved by the development and sale of stockpiled food and plans to colonize other planets? What are we turning toward and away from? What kind of life are we buying into? Key concepts explored in the research of these topics include technology, climate change, food sustainability, cultural complex, and more. To be explored in a discussion panel are the archetypal root and metaphor of these social phenomena and the implications these endeavors have for humanity entering the next phase of existence. D. Thesis University of Durham 1993 In the early modern period, women were commonly regarded as unruly and morally suspect beings. During the period, however, there was a revision in the moral status of women. Behmenism is representative of the process whereby women were raised to the status of morally elevating beings. In Jacob Boehme's theosophy, both the godhead and prelapsarian man have a feminine element, the Virgin Sophia; women are a sort of fallen counterpart to Sophia. The emphasis of early Behmenists, such as John Pordage, was on Sophia's passivity and chastity.
