Venue 1.1. The Wednesday Night Racing (WNR) Series is a series of weekly sailboat racing regattas on the Glenmore Reservoir organized by the Glenmore Sailing Club (GSC). 1.2. The Glenmore Reservoir is owned and operated by the City of Calgary. 1.3. The reservoir has two main sailboat launch and dock locations: ● The South Glenmore Park Launch area located off 24th St SW and 90th Ave SW. ● The Heritage Park Launch area located off Heritage Dr SW and 14th St SW. 2. Sportsmanship 2.1. The Wednesday Night Racing (WNR) Series is meant to be a fun and competitive event. 2.2. All participants are expected to follow the rules of sailing and these instructions. 3. Safety and Environment 3.1. Personal floatation devices must be worn at all times by all participants. 3.2. The Glenmore Reservoir is Calgary’s drinking water supply. ■ No littering or contaminating of the water, surrounding park, and boat park. ■ All boats and launch trailers must be washed prior to launching into the reservoir, if coming from a different body of water. 3.3. All participants agree to provide enough room to maneuver when around junior sailors, specifically Optis, regardless of right of way. This is for the safety of our junior sailors. 3.4. Heritage Park operates a large paddle river boat (called the S.S. “Moyie”) on the reservoir. Sailors are asked to keep clear of the Moyie. The captain will avoid sailors as best as he can, but has limited maneuverability and line-of-sight when in close proximity to smaller vessels. 3.5. All instructions by City of Calgary personnel (i.e. boat patrol) must be heeded. Revision Date: May 1, 2017 2 of 9 4. Schedule 4.1. The WNR Series will consist of 20 regattas, called “Events”, starting on Wednesday, May 3, 2017, and ending on Wednesday, September 13, 2017. 4.2. Racing will take place on Wednesday evenings at 18:30 each week, weather and reservoir condition permitting. 4.3. Any changes to the schedule will be posted on GSC Website under the WNR NOR page. Communication will be sent out via email to registered participants. 4.4. The WNR Series Events will be subdivided into four Quarters. Each Quarter will consist of 5 Events. 4.5. The Series will be governed by ISAF Racing Rules of Sailing 2017-2020, and this Notice of Race (NOR). 6. Eligibility 6.1. Entry is open to boats of all classes registered by members of GSC. 6.2. The skipper or owner of the boat must have one of the following GSC membership status: ■ Individual ■ Family ■ Honorary 6.3. All participants are subject to the latest GSC Membership Policy. 6.4. A non-member who participates three times is required to become a member of GSC as per the latest GSC Membership Policy. 6.5. GSS students may from time to time participate in the GSC WNR, and are exempt from membership requirements, so long as they are registered in their respective GSS course at that time. 6.6. Any ASA member is eligible to register and participate. 7. Registration 7.1. A boat wishing to compete in the WNR Series must be registered for the series by her skipper online on the GSC website. 7.2. If a boat wishes to compete and has not registered, they must hail the Race Committee (RC) and give notice prior to racing that they wish to compete. Upon Revision Date: May 1, 2017 3 of 9 completing the Event, it is expected that the boat owner/Skipper will register online in a timely manner. 7.3. Any member of the Alberta Sailing Association (ASA) may register a boat. 7.4. Upon entering the race area for the first race of an Event, each boat shall hail the RC and indicate the intent to race. The RC will confirm verbally or visually that the hail has been noticed. 7.5. If the skipper or crew are different than those registered for the Series/Event, the skipper has the responsibility to inform the RC of this fact. 7.6. If the sail number is different than the number registered for the Series, it is the responsibility of the skipper to hail the RC and inform them of the change. 7.7. Sail numbers must be unique for each boat in each class during racing. 8. List of Registered Competitors 8.1. Once registered for the WNR Series, the boat, her skipper, and her crew will be added to the List of Registered Competitors for the Series, which will be made available to the RC prior to each Event. 8.2. Only the skipper on the List of Registered Competitors will receive direct communications from the Club regarding the Series. Crews and other participants will need to rely on their skipper and the GSC website. 9. Classes 9.1. Each class will have their own pennant and will be scored accordingly. 9.2. Additional Class pennants may be assigned on the water, at the discretion of the RC. Notice of this change may be done on the water with a come within hail or coach boat. 10. Race Committee (RC) 10.1. Each event shall have a designated Race Officer, (also termed “OOD” - Officer on Duty - in the scoring system), who will be in charge of the Race Committee. If the paid PRO, is present, they will be the Race Officer. If the paid PRO is not present, the most experienced volunteer will be the Race Officer. 10.2. The Race Committee will assist the Race Officer with setting up courses, running races from the Race Committee Barge, and recording and reporting results. 10.3. The members of the Race Committee shall be familiar with the duties as outlined in the “GSC Race Management Guide” on the GSC website. 10.4. This is a full-time duty extending typically one hour prior to start of racing and one hour after finish of racing. 10.5. The skipper of each registered boat will be expected to form a Race Committee for one Event in the season. These volunteer duties will go towards the individual's yearly volunteer credits. For more information on volunteer credits, please refer to the latest Membership Policy and Volunteer Credit Policy. 10.6. The minimum number of volunteer members of a Race Committee is two. 10.7. Single handed boats are to contact the Fleet Captain to make arrangements for additional volunteer support while volunteering for RC. 10.8. A registered boat with two or more crew will be expected to provide a full Race Committee with the Race Officer. 10.9. A Schedule of Race Committee Duties will be maintained by the Fleet Captain and posted on the GSC website sailing page. 10.10. It is the responsibility of the scheduled Race Committee to find a competent substitute for the assigned Event in case of inability to attend. 10.11. If a boat chooses not to race during her RC duty, she will be awarded her average score of the Series and Quarter, as applicable (see “Scoring”). Revision Date: May 1, 2017 5 of 9 11. Courses & Marks 11.1. There are six fixed marks label 1 - 6 positioned in a clockwise direction around the reservoir. Each of the six marks are orange cone shaped. 11.2. An additional X Mark may be added. The X Mark is a yellow inflatable triangular buoy. 11.3. A diagram displaying the approximate locations of the fixed marks is available on the GSC website. 11.4. The sequence of marks constituting a course will be displayed on the transom of the Race Committee Barge prior to the warning signal of each starting sequence. ■ Marks denoted in Red, indicate marks to Port ■ Marks denoted in Green, indicate marks to Starboard 11.5. Start line is formed using the yellow pin with red flag and is positioned to port of the barge. Finish line is formed using the blue pin with blue flag and is positioned to starboard of the barge. 11.6. The Finish line is an obstruction during racing. 11.7. An offset circular marker may be set near the transom of the barge and is considered part of the barge. No boat shall sail between the mark and the barge 12. Timing of Racing 12.1. First warning signal will be at 18:30 with a 3-minute starting sequence. 12.2. Typical sequences with step-by-step detail of flags and signals can be found in the “GSC Race Management Guide” document on the GSC website.
