Share This: November 2014 Notes from the Director Greetings from Brandeis and the beautiful days of autumn in New England. It’s been a very full summer, highlighted by the Coming soon: Acting Together published International Peace Research Association (IPRA) conference in online with Alexander Street Press - Human Rights Studies Online collection Istanbul. Arts and Peace Commission meetings were robust, with presenters from every continent, practitioners in theatre and music especially well represented. A section of this newsletter is devoted to impressions from several presenters, in hopes of making the IPRA conversations accessible to those who were unable to attend. My own reflections are here. Before Istanbul, I spent a few days at La MaMa’s retreat for theatre artists in Umbria, Italy, engaging in conversation with participants in Catherine Filloux’s workshop for playwrights. New Minor at Brandeis: Creativity, the Also this summer, we made plans for Acting Together resources – including e- Arts, and Social Transformation book versions of the anthologies – to be available to university libraries through Alexander Street Press, an online publisher, in their Human Rights Studies collection. Users of the e-books will be able to follow links to clips of performances described in many of the chapters. We hope this makes the Acting Together resources even more dynamic and extends the reach of the stories the project’s exemplary artist-peacebuilders. A new undergraduate minor in Creativity, the Arts and Social Transformation goes live this year. We’d be delighted to confer with colleagues at other colleges and universities who might like to build support for similar programs at their institutions. -

But even at our worst, humanity and empathy continue to survive. Our story culminates in acts of kindness: soldiers from opposing sides, ‘enemies’, offering each other water, a cigarette, a shoulder to lean on. Even – incredibly – in what is surely one of the most bizarre and dangerous inventions of the human mind: a place called no man’s land. Soixante-dix ans de chansons pour la https://www.contretemps.eu Palestine redaction Si la chanson est reconnue depuis longtemps comme un écho des opinions populaires, voire comme un instrument de ralliement derrière une cause, dans le cas de la Palestine elle joue un rôle supplémentaire. Ce n’est pas un mystère : l’entreprise de colonisation du territoire palestinien s’est très tôt accompagnée d’une colonisation culturelle qui a entravé, menacé de disparition, voire totalement nié la culture palestinienne. Dans un tel contexte, les chansons palestiniennes, ou même celles qui « parlent de Palestine », en plus de participer à la lutte proprement dite, constituent en elles-mêmes des actes de résistance, des « preuves de vie », des preuves de créativité d’une population qui ne se laisse pas détruire. C’est cette histoire que nous allons explorer ici. L’article qui fait autorité sur l’histoire récente de la Palestine à travers la musique est celui de Joseph Massad, publié en anglais en 2003[1]. C’est à partir de cet article que je propose ici une approche similaire, en français, complétée par une mise à jour rendue nécessaire notamment par l’arrivée massive du rap dans les années 2000. Cette approche sera également étendue aux musiciens occidentaux qui, depuis les années 1980, contribuent à la mise en musique d’une histoire palestinienne, y compris depuis 2005, à travers leur participation à la composante culturelle de la campagne internationale de Boycott, Désinvestissement et Sanctions (BDS) lancée contre l’État israélien. Néanmoins, comme Massad, je ne rechercherai pas l’exhaustivité, mais à souligner comment la musique d’une époque réagit à l’actualité, comment elle exprime les sentiments populaires, parfois en contradiction avec les discours officiels, mais aussi comment elle mobilise les populations selon des registres « de leur temps ». -
