ADVENT TREE LIGHTING

The rain stopped and it was a beautiful evening for our first Annual Advent Tree Lighting! Many thanks to all who helped make this magical event happen last weekend including the St. John yard crew who helped Chris Berg transport the large tree from the tree farm and position it in just the right spot in our courtyard. Thanks also to Deacon Adolfo, who together with Chris, put together a beautiful lighting display, both on the tree and in the courtyard area in general. As always, we are most appreciative of our talented and giving musicians who led us in song prior to and following the lighting of the tree. Catholic Daughters served up many a cup of hot chocolate and apple cider, and treated us to goodies as well. And lastly, a shout out to the Knights who handed out prayer cards as well as a delightful Ad- vent calendar for kids of all ages. Be sure to check out the tree which is lit every night until 9:00pm.

WHAT A GREAT MORNING AT THE MOVIES

The Knights did it again: what a great morning at the movies!! Kids of all ages were spotted sitting on Santa’s lap, mugging for a photo with the jolly fellow and Mrs. Claus before the lights were turned off in one of many theaters where parishioners enjoyed their choice of four movies. Free popcorn and pop for $1.00 - what an awesome event! Thank you, as always, Knights!! Sign up for electronic giving on our website: www.stjohnvancouver.org/Give Now

CHURCH HISTORY - OUTGROWING CHURCH #3

By the 1990’s, 40 years after it was built, it was apparent that the that the third church could no long- er accommodate the growth in the parish. The church was small, and current parishioners still recall how difficult it could be to get a seat in church, particularly at Christmas or during Lent. Under the pastorship of Father Michael Obrien, pastor from 1979-1999, a committee was formed to discuss what it would take to build a new church. Pre- liminary meetings continued during Fr. Phillip Fitsimon’s tenure as pastor, from 1999-2003, until the arrival of Fr. Armando Perez in 2003 who moved the project from the planning into the implementation and construction phases. Many of our current parishioners were involved in various stages of that process and we thank them for their fore- sight and commitment. We owe a particular debt of gratitude to Gene Suhr, a retired engineer who took the lead alongside Father Armando.

The sketch on the right was included in a church directory from the 1990’s (showing a potential com- pletion/hopeful date of 2000). Although we did build our fourth, and current church, it was complet- ed in 2004 and was built in an entirely different style than what was envisioned back in the 1990’s.

KNOCK AND WALK HELPS STOCK SHELVES

Last Saturday a crew of High School and Confirmation Youth Group students from St. John walked up and down many sidewalks in the Orchards area, knocking on doors and collecting food for the Annual Knock and Walk Food Drive. They represented us very well while making a difference for those in need right here in our community. Thank you to all who participated!

LAS PODASAS: ALL ARE INVITED!

Las Posadas is Spanish for lodging, or accommodation, which in this case refers to the inn in the story of the nativity of Jesus. It is a traditional Mexican celebration, dating back 400 years, which lasts for a nine- day interval (called the novena) during the Christmas season. The novena represents the nine-month preg- nancy of Mary. It starts on December 16th and ends with Mass here at St. John the Evangelist at 6:30pm on December 24th. St. John parishioners host Las Posadas at their homes, starting at 6:30pm, followed by refreshments provided by the host(s). Everyone is invited to attend one, or all, of the Las Posadas! For more information, contact Samuel or Eugeniz Rivas at (360) 773-8784.

HUGS (FOR THE HOMELESS)

The days are definitely getting colder and here at St. John we can help make the days and nights warmer for those in need in our community. Every year, from November through January, our Children’s Faith Formation program sponsors a clothing drive to collect much needed items for the homeless families of Clark County. You are invited to donate new or gently used hats (H), underwear (U), gloves (G) and socks (S) and to place them in the HUGS chimney boxes located in the Narthex and in the Faith Formation hallway. Any size is welcome to help children and adults in need. SHARE, a non-profit organization, will distribute the items on our behalf.
