Known as the “Art Capital of the Philippines,” the of Angono in Rizal province is ideal for those looking for a unique art and food tour near . Home to the famed Angono- Petrogylphs (the oldest known work of art in the country), quirky folk art museums and restaurants serving native and exotic cuisine, Angono offers an alternative destination for weekend food trips. UAP Quezon City embarked on a Lakbay Lokal 2018 tour of Rizal Province, held last January 13, 2018. 35 Chapter members participated on this Local tour. Both educational and food trip was the highlight of the Lokal Tour.

Angono is a bit underrated compared to popular foodie destinations like and Pampanga. But if you’re into folk art and food, it can be an interesting road trip destination for those based in the metro. It’s easy enough to get here by public or private transportation. I prefer driving a motorcycle because you can avoid the traffic. We usually pass Angono going to Art’s hometown in Binangonan, so we’ve managed to sample a lot of the restaurants in the area over the years. But I’m highlighting the ones where you can enjoy food and local art/culture at the same time.

Angono is best known for celebrating the Higantes Festival, a fiesta held in honor of San Clemente, which is celebrated with a procession of higantes or gian paper mache effigies, which have become a symbol of the local culture. You can see Higantes and festival masks and heads decorating a lot of the local restaurants. For those who want to get a taste of Angono’s distinctive folk art with native cuisine, here are my top picks of where to eat there.

Nemiranda Arthouse and Atelier Museum Cafe Nemiranda Arthouse and Atelier Museum Cafe is a family art museum owned by renowned Angono artist Nemesio R. Miranda (more popularly known as Nemiranda) who specializes in paintings and sculptures celebrating the rural scenery and figures from folklore.

The Atelier Museum Cafe serves local specialties like fried itik (duck), pesang dalag (stewed mudfish), sinigang na kanduli (a type of catfish), alongside regular Pinoy staples like tapsilog, grilled liempo, chicken barbecue and pork sisig at affordable prices.

AngNewNo Arts Design Cafe AngNewNo Arts Design Cafe gives a more modern spin to folk art and food. The cafe’s name is the shortened version of the term “Ang New Angono” (The New Angono) and the place serves as a gallery for aspiring artists.

St. Jerome Church (also known as Morong Church) is a Roman located in Morong, Rizal, Philippines. It was built under forced labor during the Spanish colonization in the country, where men, women, and even children had to dig stones from a hill called Kay Ngaya; lime from the stones of the mountain Kay Maputi; and sand and gravel from .

The National Shrine Of Our Lady Of Peace And Good Voyage

The Antipolo Cathedral, also known as National Shrine of Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage, is one of the most well-known destinations in Antipolo. It is also a popular pilgrimage site among Catholics in the Philippines and other neighboring countries. The church was first established and was governed by the Jesuits in 1591. The church houses the image of Nuestra Senora de la Paz y Buenviaje.

Muralist and National Artist for Visual Arts, Carlos “Botong” Francisco’s ancestral house is situated at Dona Aurora Street, Itaas, Angono Rizal. His house serves as his museum where in his studio and belongings are well taken care of. Carlos “Botong” Francisco is known for reviving and practicing the art of mural for almost three decades. He is fond of using rural scenes and town folks as his subject. His famous work of art includes the Portrait of Purita, The Invasion of Limahong, Bayanihan, Fiesta and Sandugo. Aside from being a muralist “Botong” is also a poet and a scriptwriter. He wrote scripts for Genghs Khan, Tatlong Labuyo and Puto na Kampilan. His grandson Carlos “Totong” Francisco II manages the museum, like his grandfather, “Totong” also serve as one of Angono’s artist and pride. Along Dona Aurora Street lies the murals dedicated to Angono’s pride and homegrown artists, Carlos “Botong” Francisco and Maestro Lucio San Pedro.

Concrete murals based on the actual paintings of Carlos “Botong” Francisco about rural life were installed on almost all the houses at Dona Aurora Street. Along with the works of Francisco are the lyrics and notes of the famous “Sa Ugong ng Duyan” of Maestro San Pedro. Charlie Anorico, Gerry Batang and Ebong Pinpino were the hands behind the concrete murals in Angono.

It seems its a place where the people were more into art and creativity. Nemiranda Arthouse (The House of Myth and Legends) was created by Nemesio B. Miranda, or Nemiranda himself. He is famous for bringing in a form of art called “Imaginative Figurism” or the drawing of the human form from pure imagination. This art house showcases Angono’s mystic charms as well as the sculptured Filipino myths and legends, one of which is “Si Malakas at Si Maganda”. Situated at 10 Doña Elena St. Doña Justa Village I Angono, Rizal. The Nemiranda ArtHouse and Museum is located in Dona Justa Subdivision Angono, was designed and created by using old local materials such as bamboo, sawali, and old recycled material from old churches and convents in Angono, Rizal. The arthouse has 4 facets, which are the house gallery, Foyer, Second Floor Galleries, and the Main Gallery. Many of the artworks depicts Angono's mystic legends and local olklores such as "Ang Nuno", "Habagat", "The Mermaid of Angono", "Amihan", and "Malakas at Maganda".

The Nemiranda Arthouse/Atelier Cafe, the art gallery cum coffee shop of Angonon artist Nemesio "Nemi" R. Miranda, is a lofty old wood, bamboo and concrete house converted into a home- studio with a prominent signage at the street corner. Visitors enter the arthouse (also known as "The House of Myths and Legends"), via a side gate, into the coffee shop. The extensive, 3-floor art gallery has a massive, larger-than-life, pastel blue stone mermaid (sirena) prominently placed above the art gallery's arched entrance.

Borrowing from what was already written about the Nemiranda Arthouse, the materials used in the arthouse could have been the oldest in Angono. The Arthouse is surrounded by mythical relief murals, and three dimensional mythological characters such as The Mermaid of Angono, "Amihan", Habagat" and Mariang Makiling", Bernardo Carpio", "Mutya ng Pasig", "Malakas at Maganda", and "Ang Nuno". whole edifice is also called the house of legends, an artistic creation by the artist himself. The gallery is a showcase of Nemiranda and his five children namely; Katrina, Zarah, Paul Greco, Don Nemesio III, and Chesca attached to the gallery is also the residence of the Nemiranda family which has become part of tourist interests because of its turn of the century wood design, component, showcasing, some of the early works of Nemiranda in the sixties and seventies.”

It was built under forced labor during the Spanish colonization in the country, where men, women, and even children had to dig stones from a hill called Kay Ngaya; lime from the stones of the mountain Kay Maputi; and sand and gravel from Morong River.

Architecture The Morong facade and bell tower is easily the most striking of all church facades along de Bay. Frequently photographed and described as baroque, the facade/bell tower is more properly described as Baroque Revival architecture. The central portion of the facade surges outward and the catenated balustrade above give the whole a dynamic felling. Various decorative elements, some Mexican in origin, give the facade a richness characteristic of Baroque. Four angels, representing the cardinal virtues, stand at the corners of the bell tower. Fr. Felix Huerta, writing in 1852, states that the facade had finials shaped as jars and shells used for illuminating it. It is said that it was built by Chinese craftsmen as evidence: two Chinese lion sculptures ( a boy and a girl lion ) at the entrance to the steep driveway. One lion, said to be the girl lion, was stolen between 2000 and 2005. Local folklore said that the female lion has a hidden treasure inside it. While the other lion, the male lion, is safeguarded at the St. Jerome school vicinity. The stone and mortar church which has a three-story facade, and an octagonal bell tower whose cross is illuminated at night and can be seen from the surrounding countryside. The bell tower of the church is used by local fisher man in the nearby as a light house when fishing at night and during the storm. Its Frontispiece and he belfry were renovated by Bartolome Palatino of , between 1850-1853.

1st class relic of St. Jerome An added attraction in the church of Morong is the first class relic of the town's patron saint Saint Jerome; (Patron of scholars of the bible, Saint who translated the bible, feast day : September 30). The first class relic (a part of the saint's body) was given to the parish year 2005, through the effort of then parish priest Rev. Fr. Lawrence "Larry" Paz, when they had their first pilgrimage tour to holy land and Vatican City. The relic is publicly exposed every Saturday during the anticipated mass, guarded by the knights of Saint Jerome. While the kissing of the relic is done every last Saturday of the month. After two years, another relic was given, in 2007 to the parish again as a gift from the main chaplain of the church of St. Jerome in Rome, this time bigger. This relic is now buried on top of the table of the main altar which is being kissed by the priest every time there is a mass.J

The Antipolo Cathedral, also a national shrine (National Shrine of Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage), is a favorite pilgrimage site. It’s one of the two well-known destinations in Antipolo (the other is ). We decided to visit this cathedral one cloudy afternoon, in preparation for the visita iglesia we plan in the neighboring province of Laguna. In front of the church is the marker placed in 1937 by the Historical Research and Markers Committee. The marker gives us a brief history of the Nuestra Senora de la Paz y Buen Viaje. The Antipolo Cathedral, built by the Jesuits between 1630-1633, damaged during the earthquakes of 1645, 1824 and 1883. We could have a good idea of strong earthquakes in the past based on damage to churches, just like the Manila Cathedral and the churches of Ilocos.

The image of the Virgin was discovered by a Spanish Governor named Don Juan Nino de Tabora in 1626. It was said that when Gov. Tabora died, the image was turned over to the Jesuit Fathers who were then constructing a church in Antipolo. Another church was also being planned to be constructed in honor of Our Lady in Barrio Sta. Cruz. However, the brown image always “got lost” and was always found on the trunk of the Tipolo tree that stood on the original site of the old church. The Fathers and local folks took this as a sign that the image didn’t want to leave that place so they made a pedestal carved out the trunk of the Tipolo tree. Henceforth, the image was referred to as the Virgin of Antipolo In 1954, Antipolo Church was declared as a national shrine of the Philippines. Statues of the twelve apostles were erected on top of the church’s main door and pilasters. The church was greatly damaged in 1639’s Chinese uprising and various earthquakes from 1645 to 1863. People primarily go to Antipolo Cathedral to have their vehicles blessed. While some visit before going on long journeys. In fact, one of the most well-known traditions of religious overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) is visiting the Cathedral before leaving for another country. In my opinion, any trip to Antipolo would not be complete without stopping by the Cathedral.
