The Leonardo of the Low Countries During the interbellum the Hague artist Willem van Konijnenburg (1868-1943) was one of the standard-bearers of Dutch modern art. After the Second World War, he disappeared from sight. Why? Closely related to this question are such issues as the nature of his art and his role as an artist, and the way they have been portrayed. What was Van Konijnenburg’s place in the Dutch art world, and was the position accorded him what he himself had hoped for? My research is intended to provide an answer to these questions.

For a younger generation, it is perhaps surprising to discover that the institution is in fact so young. Indeed, it is remarkable that in such a short period of time the Museum has been able to create its own specific niche in both the Dutch and international art worlds. This first issue of the Van Gogh Museum Journal marks the passage of the Rijksmuseum (National Museum) Vincent van Gogh to its new status as Stichting Van Gogh Museum (Foundation Van Gogh Museum). The publication is designed to both report on the Museum's activities and, more particularly, to be a motor and repository for the scholarship on the work of Van Gogh and aspects of the permanent collection in broader context. Besides articles on individual works or groups of objects from both the Van Gogh Museum's collection and the collection of the Museum Mesdag, the Journal will publish the acquisitions of the previous year.     Leo Gestel, Portrait of Jan Wiegman seated on a Chair Woerden 1881 – 1941 Hilversum charcoal and crayon on paper 38 ¾ by 28 5/8 inches (985 by 727 mm.) signed and dated upper right: ‘Bergen 1921’ provenance: Private collection, Belgium exhibited: Museum Kranenburgh, Bergen, Gestel in Bergen, May 18 – October 6, 2002 note: Leo Gestel was one of the leading artists of Dutch Modernism. He first studied with his father, Willem Gestel, the director of an art school, and his uncle, Dimmen Gestel, who had painted with Vincent van Gogh. Later, the young artist was a pupil at the Amsterdam Academy. During his career Gestel experimented with Cubism, Expressionism, Futurism and Postimpressionism. His early work follows the style of the late 19th century, for example, the Postimpressionist Still Life with Fruit (fig.1). By 1913, he was painting simplified Cubist landscapes and figures such as Mallorca Harbour, 1914 (fig. 2). In the same year Herwarth Walden offered Gestel the chance to exhibit his work in the “Erster Deutscher Herbstsalon” in Berlin. Walden, a German Expressionist artist, was one of the most important promoters of German avant-garde art in the early twentieth century. By the 1920’s, Gestel’s subjects show the clear influence of Expressionism. As in the present work, his compositions are strongly stylized and tightly composed. Gestel’s Portrait of Jan Wiegman displays the aesthetics and spirit of contemporary European Expressionsim during the crisis years following World War I. The bold handling of line in charcoal and crayon and the subjects striking emotional form depict an essential reality and human personality hidden behind the world of surface appearance.

    Divisionism - Heritage Van Gogh (1853 – 1890) went to live with his brother in Paris in 1886, where he fell under the influence of the Impressionists and Neo Impressionists. His palette lightened and became more colourful, and he adopted the technique of painting in small dabs of contrasting colours. van Gogh, Self Portrait 1887 Maximilien Luce (1858 – 1941) was a prolific French Neo- impressionist artist, known for his paintings, illustrations, engravings, and graphic art, and also for his anarchist activism. Starting as an engraver, he then concentrated on painting, first as an Impressionist, then as a Pointillist, and Luce, Morning, Interior 1890 finally returning to Impressionism. Luce aligned with the Neo-impressionists not only in their artistic techniques, but also in their political philosophy of anarchism. Many of his illustrations were featured in socialist periodicals. Charles Angrand (1854 – 1926) was a French artist who gained renown for his Neo-Impressionist paintings and drawings. He was an important member of the Parisian avant-garde art scene in the late 1880s and early 1890s. He moved to Paris in 1882, becoming friends with Seurat, van Gogh, Signac, Luce, and Cross. In 1884 he co-founded Société des Artistes Indépendants, along with Seurat, Signac, Odilon Redon, and others. Angrand, The Western Railway at its Exit from Paris 1886 In 1887, L'Accident, his first Divisionist painting, was exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants. Angrand joined Seurat in plein air painting on La Grande Jatte island. It has been said that he had the "ability to distil poetry from the most banal suburban scene" Angrand's implementation of Pointillist techniques differed from that of some of its leading proponents.

    PRESS RELEASE | AMSTERDAM | 14 APRIL 2017 AUCTION OF THE FORMER KAMERBEEK COLLECTION LED BY ISAAC ISRAELS’ MOULIN DE LA GALETTE Isaac Israels (1865-1934), Moulin de la Galette, Paris (€300,000-500,000) Amsterdam ─ Christie’s Amsterdam will offer a remarkable private collection of late 19th century and early 20th century Dutch art: over 100 paintings and works on paper from the former Kamerbeek Collection. The collection has been on view in 2007 at Museum Flehite in Amersfoort in the dedicated exhibition Jongkind tot Van der Leck and various works from the collection remained for another decade in the museum on a long term loan. Cees and Jarmila Kamerbeek were passionate art collectors. After selling their company in 1999 they became wine farmers in Southern France and commenced a collection of Dutch art from the period 1850-1950, with the ambition to create a total overview of 150 years of Realist art. The basis of the collection was laid by works by artists from The Hague School and the Romantic School, collected by Jarmila’s grandfather, the artistic frame and mirror maker Jacob van Bommel (1868-1946) who lived in The Hague and sometimes was paid in kind for his framing by artists such as Floris Arntzenius and Johannes Evert Hendrik Akkeringa. The collection is offered at Christie’s Amsterdam for private reasons. Around 1850, shortly after the implementation of statesman Thorbecke’s new constitution, in which individual liberties were embodied and guaranteed, realism made its entrance in art and the strait- jacket of academism was shed. With Johan Barthold Jongkind’s pre-impressionism, inspiring Claude Monet to create his famous Impression, soleil levant from 1872, a new path was chosen that would eventually, around 1920, lead to abstraction, a route Mr & Mrs Kamerbeek intended to map out with this collection: from the beginning of the new, individual fine art, via the modernists to avant-garde artists who partially or entirely left the figuration, such as Bart van der Leck.
