MIAMI UNIVERSITY The Graduate School Certificate for Approving the Dissertation We hereby approve the Dissertation of Steven Almaraz Candidate for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy ______________________________________ Director Kurt Hugenberg ______________________________________ Reader Allen McConnell ______________________________________ Reader Jonathan Kunstman ______________________________________ Graduate School Representative Monica Schneider ABSTRACT APPARENT SOCIOSEXUAL ORIENTATION: FACIAL CORRELATES AND CONSEQUENCES OF WOMEN’S UNRESTRICTED APPEARANCE by Steven M. Almaraz People make quick work of forming a variety of impressions of one another based on minimal information. Recent work has shown that people are able to make judgments of others’ Apparent Sociosexual Orientation (ASO) – an estimation of how interested another person is in uncommitted sexual activity – based on facial information alone. In the present work, I used three studies to expand the understanding of this poorly understood facial judgment by investigating the dimensionality of ASO (Study 1), the facial predictors of ASO (Study 2), and the consequences of these ASO judgments on men’s hostility and benevolence towards women (Study 3). In Study 1, I showed that men’s judgments of women’s Apparent Sociosexual Orientation were organized into judgments of women’s appearance of unrestricted attitudes and desires (Intrapersonal ASO) and their appearance of unrestricted behaviors (Behavioral ASO). Study 2 revealed that more attractive and more dominant appearing women were perceived as more sexually unrestricted. In Study 3, I found that women who appeared to engage in more unrestricted behavior were subjected to increased benevolent sexism, though this effect was primarily driven by unrestricted appearing women’s attractiveness. However, women who appeared to have sexually unrestricted attitudes and desires were subjected to increased hostility, even when controlling for the effects of the facial correlates found in Study 2.

  • The Élan Vital of DIY Porn
Liminalities: A Journal of Performance Studies Vol. 11, No. 1 (March 2015) The Élan Vital of DIY Porn Shaka McGlotten In this essay, I borrow philosopher Henri Bergson’s concept élan vital, which is translated as vital force or vital impetus, to describe the generative potential evident in new Do-It- Yourself (DIY) pornographic artifacts and to resist the trend to view porn as dead or dead- ening. Bergson employed this idea to challenge the mechanistic view of matter held by the biological sciences of the late 19th and early 20th Centuries, a view that considered the stuff of life to be reducible to brute or inert matter. Bergson argued, rather, that matter, insofar as it undergoes continuous change, is itself alive and not because of an immaterial, animat- ing principle, but because this liveliness is intrinsic to matter itself. I use Bergson’s élan vi- tal to think through the liveliness of gay DIY porn and for its contribution to a visual his- tory of desire, for the ways it changes the relationships between consumers and producers of pornography, and the ways it realizes new ways of stretching the pornographic imagination aesthetically and politically. It’s Alive I jump between sites. I watch a racially ambiguous young man with thick, muscular legs standing in front of a nondescript bathtub. He whispers, “I’m so horny right now,” rub- bing his cock beneath red Diesel boxer briefs. He turns and pulls his underwear down, arching his back to reveal a hairy butt. Turning to the camera again he shows off his modestly equipped, but very hard, dick.

  • Sex Position, Marital Status, and HIV Risk Among Indian Men Who Have Sex with Men: Clues to Optimizing Prevention Approaches
AIDS PATIENT CARE and STDs ORIGINAL ARTICLE Volume 25, Number X, 2011 ª Mary Ann Liebert, Inc. DOI: 10.1089/apc.2011.0079 Sex Position, Marital Status, and HIV Risk Among Indian Men Who Have Sex with Men: Clues to Optimizing Prevention Approaches Vagish Hemmige, M.D.,1 Hannah Snyder, B.A.,2 Chuanhong Liao, M.S.,3 Kenneth Mayer, M.D.,4 Vemu Lakshmi, M.D.,5 Sabitha Rani, M.S.W.,6 Ganesh Orunganti, M.D.,6 and John Schneider, M.D., M.P.H.1,3 Abstract A divide exists between categories of men who have sex with men (MSM) in India based on their sex position, which has consequences for the design of novel HIV prevention interventions. We examine the interaction between sex position and other attributes on existing HIV risk including previous HIV testing, unprotected anal intercourse (UAI), and HIV serostatus among MSM recruited from drop-in centers and public cruising areas in the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad, India. A survey was administered by trained research assistants and minimally invasive HIV testing was performed by finger-stick or oral testing. HIV seropositive MSM underwent CD4 + lymphocyte count measurement. In our sample (n = 676), 32.6% of men were married to women, 22.2% of receptive only participants were married, and 21.9% of men were HIV seropositive. In bi- + variate analysis, sex position was associated with previous HIV testing, UAI, HIV serostatus, and CD4 lym- phocyte count at diagnosis. In multivariate analysis with interaction terms, dual unmarried men were more likely to have undergone an HIV test than insertive unmarried men (odds ratio [OR] 2.8; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.2–6.5), a relationship that did not hold among married men.

  • Community Perceptions on the Role of Sexual Activity on Stroke: a Qualitative Study Exploring the Views of Ghanaian Local Community Residents Olutobi Adekunle Sanuade
Sanuade BMC Public Health (2019) 19:717 https://doi.org/10.1186/s12889-019-7093-6 RESEARCHARTICLE Open Access Community perceptions on the role of sexual activity on stroke: a qualitative study exploring the views of Ghanaian local community residents Olutobi Adekunle Sanuade Abstract Background: Stroke is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in Ghana and sometimes comes with multifaceted complications including sexual dysfunction. While evidence is clear that living with stroke can result in sexual dysfunction, there are contradictory views regarding the causal association between sexual activity and stroke. This study explores perceptions of Ghanaian local communities on the role of sexual activity on stroke causation. Methods: This was a cross-sectional qualitative study. Thirty (30) focus group discussions (FGDs) were conducted in five communities across Ghana (Ga Mashie, Tafo, Gyegyeano, Chanshegu and Agorve) between October and November 2017. Data were analysed through a thematic approach. Results: Participants generally believed that sexual activity can cause a stroke. They mentioned that the dynamics through which sex can trigger a stroke include sex positions (i.e. having sex while standing and on the floor), high frequency of sex, having sex when older and engaging in indiscriminate sex. Conclusion: This study shows the need to pay critical attention to these community perceptions when developing intervention strategies for stroke in Ghana. This study also highlights that discussion about sexual activity in Ghana is more complex than the current health education programme allows, and so demands a ‘comprehensive sex education approach’ rather than a ‘disease-centered approach’. Keywords: Sexuality, Stroke, Sexual activity, Community, Ghana Background and deep venous thrombosis (DVT) [2], and they may The World Health Organization defined stroke as ‘rapidly have significant impact on stroke prognosis.

DECEPTION IN FACIAL EXPRESSIONS OF PAIN: STRATEGIES TO IMPROVE DETECTION by MARILYN LOUISE HILL B.A. (Honours), Queen's University, 1989 M.Sc, Memorial University of Newfoundland, 1992 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY in THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES Department of Psychology We accept this thesis as conforming to the required standard THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA AUGUST 1996 © Marilyn Louise Hill, 1996 In presenting this thesis in partial fulfilment of the requirements for an advanced degree at the University of British Columbia, I agree that the Library shall make it freely available for reference and study. I further agree that permission for extensive copying of this thesis for scholarly purposes may be granted by the head of my department or by his or her representatives. It is understood that copying or publication of this thesis for financial gain shall not be allowed without my written permission. Department The University of British Columbia Vancouver, Canada DE-6 (2/88) Abstract Research suggests that clinicians assign greater weight to nonverbal expression than to patients' self-report when judging the location and severity of their pain. However, it has also been found that pain patients are fairly successful at altering their facial expressions of pain, as their deceptive and genuine pain expressions show few differences in the frequency and intensity of pain-related facial actions. The general aim of the present research was to improve the detection of deceptive pain expressions using both an empirical and a clinical approach. The first study had an empirical focus to pain identification, and provided a more detailed description of genuine and deceptive pain expressions by using a more comprehensive range of facial coding procedures than previous research.

Women’s Experiences with Sex Position Decisions in Heterosexual Relationships in Ghana Daniel Yaw Fiaveh Centre for Men’s Health and Sex Studies [email protected] Introduction The paper is about Ghanaian women and men’s cultural beliefs about sex positions and women’s sexual agency thereof. In countries in Africa, dominant ideologies of masculinity are seen as a threat to women’s practices of sexual negotiations. Based on the narratives of 20 women and 16 men in a suburb of Accra, the present study highlights Ghanaian women’s sexual agentic capacity by investigating the factors that trigger women and men’s sex position decision making in Ghana. Sex positions form important aspects of human sexuality and the study which is located in issues of gender, sexuality, and cultural beliefs brings to light knowledge on intimate partner relationships especially in relation to women's sexual and reproductive choices. Sex positions are those positions that men and women perform during sexual intercourse. There are different sex positions and Hooper (2000), for example, illustrates several types of positions (such as the yawning position, the widely opened position, acrobatic position, erotic sculptures, the elephant posture, side-by-side, rear entry ‘penetration’, and so on) which women and men engage with during sex. Sex positions stimulate sexual pleasure. Although a union between a woman and a man is intended as a source of procreation, it also provides a reliable means for the satisfaction of sexual desires (Amidu et al., 2011; McFadden, 2003). Studies (e.g. Bizimana, 2010; Carroll, 2007; Ratele, 2008) show that sex positions offer partners the opportunity to enhance sexual satisfaction.

Though derided by critics, this newly minted genre had two notable features: broader narratives within which sex occurred, and an insistent focus on the visual display of male pleasure. Plotting Sex claims that, by embedding sex within a story, sex itself takes on narrative qualities. To support this claim, it teases out small shifts in the twentieth century’s episteme that collectively contributed to the early 1970s emergence of what it terms pornography’s performatistic screen, or the base, plotted structure of bodily performance and engagement underpinning sexual displays as enacted over time in orgasmically-oriented hard core film. This project starts with the twin Foucaultian poles of law and “human sciences” as represented by the metonyms of American obscenity jurisprudence and sexology, finding in both a late 1960s pivot to issues of social construction and utility as tethered to narrative.
