PRESS RELEASE Artist: Maciek Schejbal Album: Afro-Polka Label: Afro-Polka Productions Release Date: August 30, 2018 Maciek Schejbal (pronounced MAH-chek SHAY-bal) is world-class drummer based in New York City. In addi- tion to gigging and touring with jazz bands and afro-pop groups, Maciek is an instructor at the Drummers Collec- tive in Manhattan. The Drummers Collective is generally thought of as the drumming equivalent of Los Angeles’ Guitar Institute of Technology. Afro-Polka is Maciek’s brand and a nascent genre of music. He has traveled, listened, learned and amalgamated a huge amount of styles, traditions and art forms into a strong, singular and original musical voice. From Cracow, to Johannesburg and Cape Town, and then onto New York City, Maciek has formed crack rhythm sections with some of the best bass players in the world. Afro-Polka great musicians he has collaborated with in his journeys. Don’t be scared by the polka, these fresh sounding tracks are is Maciek’s irst album consisting entirely of his compositions. Brian Balogh: And I'm Brian Balogh. Ed Ayers: If you're new to the podcast each week, along with our colleague Nathan Connolly, we explore a different aspect of American history. Brian Balogh: We're going to start the show in 1962 when one of the most celebrated figures of the 20th century found themselves in the grips of one of the world's most notorious regimes. The figure was Nelson Mandela and the regime was South Africa's apartheid Government. Tom Borstelmann: Mandela had spent most of 1962 abroad, as a representative of the recently banned African national Congress. Brian Balogh: Tom Borstelmann teaches global history at the University of Nebraska. Tom Borstelmann: And he had been engaged in promoting support in Egypt, in other parts of North Africa and especially in the United Kingdom. And then when he came back into South Africa in August, on August 5th of 1962, he was arrested by the South African police. Apparently from the best evidence we have, at least in part on the basis of a tip from the CIA, which worked closely with the intelligence services of the South African state. Brian Balogh: Nelson Mandela's arrest came in the wake of some important moments in South Africa's history.

  • The South African All-Stars Tony Cedras
The South African All-Stars Member Bios Tony Cedras BORN in Elsies River, Cape Town in 1952, Tony Cedras is a sought after session player who has toured the world as part of the Gracelands show band, and before that, as a member of Amandla cultural ensemble in exile. Cedras' first musical experiences were in the local church choir, singing and also playing accordion. He soon progressed to trumpet, taking in the local jazz scene, as well as the American jazz influences prominent in South Africa at that time. Cedras became a key session player in the Cape jazz circuit, working with artists such as Jonathan Butler, tenor saxophonist Winston Mankunku Ngozi, altoist Robbie Jansen, flautist/guitarist Russel Herman, and bassist Basil Moses. The Estudio project, together with Robbie Jansen and others was acknowledged as a highlight of this period. After touring inside South Africa, Cedras relocated to Gaborone, in the neighbouring state of Botswana in the early 1980's. At that stage, Botswana was a home-away-from-home for many exiles, and it was here that he met trombonist/bandleader Jonas Gwangwa. Gwangwa was the musical director of the Amandla ensemble of the ANC, which Cedras joined, travelling not only in Africa, but also in Europe, Canada and Brazil. While working with Amandla, Cedras spent time in London, where he made contact with other South African artists who were part of the ex-patriot South African music scene. He moved there in 1985, and soon formed the group Kintone, a band which "explored the common musical ground between its West Indian and South African membership".

  • Paul Simon's Graceland: Days of Wonder and Miracles by Yunus
Paul Simon’s Graceland: Days of wonder and miracles by Yunus Momoniat 8 March 2021 When Paul Simon embarked on a project to draw inspiration from South African musicians, he set out on a perilous obstacle course that would stir fevered controversy. Simon entered into a political minefield: he transgressed the United Nations’ call to boycott South Africa’s apartheid regime, he angered the African National Congress and other liberation movements and he dared to question the thinking behind their political tactics. This was the project, begun 35 years ago in February 1985, that resulted in the release of Graceland, the album that saved Simon’s flagging career but which also brought world acclaim for music from South Africa. By no means ignorant of the horrors of apartheid, Simon appreciated the reasoning behind the cultural boycott, and had turned down invitations to perform at Sun City in what was then the Bophuthatswana “independent homeland”. Other famous musicians took up the invitation and came to play to white South African audiences who would never otherwise see world-class acts because of the cultural boycott. Many of these were blacklisted, including Queen, Rod Stewart, the Beach Boys, Frank Sinatra, Elton John and, crucially, Linda Ronstadt. Around the same time, Stevie Van Zandt, guitarist for Bruce Springsteen, founded Artists United Against Apartheid, producing an album and single, both titled Sun City, to urge artists to support the cultural boycott. It featured Springsteen, Miles Davis, Bob Dylan, Herbie Hancock, Gil Scott-Heron, Ringo Starr, Run DMC, Lou Reed and Peter Gabriel among the 50 or so artists who took part.
