Godfrey Portland State University 2013 © 2013 Janet Leigh Gesme Abstract The following work is an analysis of Martin Luther’s Two Kingdoms Theory. This influential and controversial theory was introduced in his 1523 treatise, Von weltlicher Obrigkeit—Secular Authority. Although this document was written almost 500 years ago and takes its cue from the writings of St. Augustine and the Bible, it continued to have a significant effect on German society in both the political and religious realm well into the present day. Based on an analysis of the text and on the culture and literature that led Luther to write Von weltlicher Obrigkeit, this thesis evaluates various interpretations and applications of the Two Kingdoms Theory. The specific effects of Luther’s teaching during the Nazi era are examined politically and theologically. Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s Religionsloses Christentum—Religionless Christianity and Martin Luther’s Zwei-Reiche-Lehre—Two Kingdoms Theory will be compared to demonstrate that they illuminate the same truth from different vantage points: neither people nor their rules are viable substitutes for God. A brief introduction explains the means of analysis used in this thesis, which is based on Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s call for a new religionless language as described in letters written during his imprisonment by the Nazi regime. i Acknowledgements There is no doubt in my mind as to whom I should acknowledge first for the final product contained in these pages: I thank my God and Father, my Savior Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit for infinite patience and for not letting go of me throughout the research, writing, and revision stages of the thesis process. Aaron Simmons Department of Philosophy, Furman University, Greenville, SC 29613, USA; [email protected] Abstract: Traditional philosophy of religion has tended to focus on the doxastic dimension of religious life, which although a vitally important area of research, has often come at the cost of philosophical engagements with religious practice. Focusing particularly on Christian traditions, this essay offers a sustained reflection on one particular model of embodied Christian practice as presented in the work of Søren Kierkegaard. After a discussion of different notions of practice and perfection, the paper turns to Kierkegaard’s conception of the two churches: the Church Triumphant and the Church Militant. Then, in light of Kierkegaard’s defense of the latter and critique of the former, it is shown that Kierkegaard’s specific account gets appropriated and expanded in Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s account of “costly grace” and “religionless Christianity,” and Simone Weil’s conception of “afflicted love.” Ultimately, it is suggested that these three thinkers jointly present a notion of “militant liturgies” that offers critical and constructive resources for contemporary philosophy of religion. Indeed, God’s apocalyptic intervention in history appears to override the possibility of meaningful human responsibility or agency, seemingly eliminating the possibility of Christian ethics. In this paper, I explore this ‘problem of Christian ethics,’ finding a solution in a reading of the theology of Dietrich Bonhoeffer through the lens of Pauline apocalyptic. I argue that Bonhoeffer restores the viability and integrity of Christian ethics by adopting a thoroughly apocalyptic theology, affirming human responsibility and agency in a world that is ultimately in the hands of a sovereign God. Far from issuing a call to follow an ethical program or a facile imitation of Jesus, Bonhoeffer develops what scholar Philip Ziegler calls a “theological ethics of God’s apocalypse,” one in which human knowledge, agency, and ethics are radically transformed by the apocalypse of Christ’s incarnation, crucifixion, and resurrection.

    CHAPTER 8 THE COMPATIBILITY OF AN EXISTENTIAL PERSPECTIVE WITH RELIGION “In discussions of Existentialism, this idea of the baselessness and arbitrariness of human values is almost always the one that arouses protest.” (Van Cleve Morris, 1990, Existentialism in Education, p. 41) Concerns raised in response to any perspective described as existential are usually based upon the apparent ‘arbitrariness’ of values as identified by Morris in the passage above. A perspective of existential spirituality might be assumed to be potentially at odds with religious views because it privi- leges the centring of the person rather than of a doctrinal framework and therefore it might be considered as being inappropriate for religious-based schools. The purpose of this chapter is to examine whether the perspective of existential spirituality being developed here can be compatible with religious views, and if so, how it must be conceptualised. If existential philosophy is unable to readily lend itself to an acceptance of a deity and is unable to be seen as being able to embrace religious views, then opposition towards the adoption of existential spirituality for education could fairly be raised, not least because many educational institutions in western societies are clearly affiliated with various religions, especially those of Christianity. Sartre’s views have often made Existentialism appear inherently atheistic. A well-known connotation imputed to the philosophy is its denial of the existence of a deity or even of his ‘death’ but who in turn might be otherwise able to provide meaning to the lives of individuals. Christian theologians such as Karl Barth, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Paul Tillich and Rudolf Bultmann, who have used existential philosophy as a basis for their interpretations, often tend to demythologise religion giving little notice to the deity as an aspect of their particular world-views.

    JULACE: Journal of University of Namibia Language Centre Volume 3, No. 1, 2018 (ISSN 2026-8297) Persistence of African languages and religions in Latin America since slavery Ndapewa Fenny Nakanyete University of Namibia Abstract This paper examines the presence of African languages and spiritual practices of Candomblé, Santería and Vodou religions in Brazil, Cuba and Haiti respectively. The three religions are known to have been originated by African slaves that were mostly captured in- and transferred from West and Central Africa to Latin America. Currently, the three religions are not only followed by African descendants, but also by people of various ethnic backgrounds worldwide. Thus, people flock to the three countries regularly to be initiated into this African-based religions and cultures. On the other hand, similar spiritual practices on the African continent seem to be generally stigmatized if not demonized. Findings presented in this paper are as a result of direct observations and open interviews over a four months of fieldwork, as well as desktop reviews of existing literature. The findings demonstrate etymologies of terms and expressions that are of various African languages origin and are used in the three religions. The paper calls for integral comparative studies of parts in Africa with parts of Latin America to auxiliary identify linguistic and spirituality similarities, and significance roles of African slaves in maintaining African traditions.     Experiencing ritual: Shamanic elements in Minoan religion Christine Morris and Alan Peatfield Introduction RITUAL HAS ALWAYS been a popular subject of study in archaeology and anthro­ pology. Early ethnographers relished the details of its drama, and early archaeolo­ gists found it a convenient explanation for those finds they could not explain. More sophisticated modern scholars ponder the symbolic complexity of its action, and debate its social function. And yet, in all of this, there has been relatively little focus on the experience of ritual. What was it like to do any given ritual? What sort of experience were the participants trying to elicit from themselves? How did they modify the infinite possibilities of human action to create that experience? Philosophy and the body Another fashionable subject in contemporary cultural studies, which has close affinities with ritual, is the body. Here we find many of the same problems. Though much scholarship on the body does proclaim the need to break free of Platonic and Cartesian mind/body oppositions, scholars still sustain implicitly the hierarchical dominance of the mind, in that the body is perceived of as being essentially a cultural category, constructed through language. The debate is focused on how descriptions of the body are socially and intellectually defined, and encoded. Even among those who do acknowledge the power of the body, such as Michel Foucault, a single sense, that of seeing, is typically attributed primary importance; hence the interest in the visual strategies of power, in display, in the image, in the gaze, and in the primacy given to 'viewing' the past (Porteous 1990, Tuan 1979).

Younan President, Lutheran World Federation Bishop, Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land Wittenberg, Germany, 15 June 2016 “I pray … that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, as you are being rooted and grounded in love.” (Ephesians 3.17) Dear sisters and brothers, I bring greetings to you from Jerusalem, the city where God’s love has been demonstrated to the world in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Today, I will be speaking about love. Grounded in the love of God in Christ Jesus, we are commanded to love one another. It is my hope that our global communion would be, first and foremost, a community of love. This is not a simple idea, because love is neither simple nor easy. I am quite happy that this meeting is in Germany, hosted by the German National Committee. Thanks for all of the preparation and the trouble you have endured to make this meeting happen. It is especially good to be back in Wittenberg. During my last visit here, we planted a tree in the Luther Garden. During that occasion, the mayor called me an ambassador of Wittenberg. Since then, I have been happy to carry the message of love and Reformation—the message of the freshness of the Gospel—that emerged from Wittenberg in the 1500s and has spread to the ends of the earth. Germany is a country of profound history, with profound lessons to teach the contemporary world.
