Since the 1980s, the Green Coalition has supported Les Amis de Meadowbrook and their work to defend Meadowbrook from urban encroachment. In 1989, the Coalition insisted that Meadowbrook be included in the Montreal Urban Community's Green Space Acquisition Program. But, the “Moratorium” cancelled that initiative. Once again, this last unprotected green space in Greater Southwestern Montreal is threatened with destruction. In this special 2010 International Year of Biodiversity, Green Coalition implores you to honour the pledge you made in 2003 to save Meadowbrook. Please practice biodiversity conservation here at home! Validate your leadership on the international stage for biodiversity conservation around the planet. Act locally! Many Green Coalition members wrote letters to persuade you to maintain funding for the protection of Montreal’s last natural spaces. They are counting on you to invest the funds to enhance the biodiversity of our city; to conserve green oases like Meadowbrook for the health and well-being of all Montrealers. Please don’t leave the funds for 2010 on the table. Let’s remember that following public hearings on the Politique de protection et de mise en valeur des milieux naturels in 2004, the Office de consultation publique de Montréal recommended adding Meadowbrook as the eleventh ecoterritory. And also, just last year in 2009, the city’s own Labreque Commission clearly called for the conservation of Meadowbrook. Mayor Tremblay, please make the conservation of Meadowbrook and its Little Saint-Pierre River your personal priority in the 2010 International Year of Biodiversity, so that it may become the keystone piece of the Trame Verte du Sud-Ouest, a green corridor to the Falaise Saint-Jacques, to the new green spaces at the Turcot and to the Saint Lawrence River. A panel of legal experts has recommended the provincial government allow what it is calling “medical assistance to die” in rare cases where a patient is close to death and unable to endure the physical or psychological pain — and the Quebec government says it believes it has found a way of not running afoul of Ottawa with the measures. Euthanasia and assisted suicide are illegal in Canada under the Criminal Code. However, Quebec junior health minister Veronique Hivon said Tuesday the panel determined that provinces have the legal jurisdiction to legislate in matters of health and that the future Quebec legislation would clarify how acts to end a life wouldn’t be considered suicide. Piero Di Iorio, the former head of Excavation D.P. Ltd., stunned the ongoing public inquiry during the afternoon session with the allegation that another construction boss once went so far as to intentionally slam into Di Iorio’s truck in the Ville Marie tunnel to prevent him from getting to city hall on time to submit a bid. The driver of the other vehicle was Johnny Piazza, the witness said, brother of local construction boss Joey Piazza. “He crushed me against the wall of the tunnel,” said Di Iorio, who recently left the world of construction after more than three decades in the industry. He was able to climb out of his mangled truck’s window, he testified, then an off-duty RCMP officer drove him the rest of the way downtown, where he dropped off his bid as planned.
