2006 CALIFORNIA GOLDEN BEAR BASEBALL 3 HEAD COACH DAVID ESQUER 8 David ESQUER Head Coach Seventh Season

California head baseball coach David Esquer is a person who exudes class and remains positive through the toughest of situations. The Golden Bears had a top-notch 2005 campaign in which Cal finished 34-23 overall and 13-11 in the Pac-10, yet was denied an NCAA postseason berth. Instead of dwelling on the slight, Esquer and his staff, in a true display of leadership, have resolved to make the program even better in 2006. Entering his seventh season, Esquers’ Bears are ranked 25th in Baseball America’s Preseason Poll with three preseason All-Americans – junior outfielders Brennan Boesch and Chris Errecart, and junior right-hander Brandon Morrow. Cal also returns a freshman All-American in sophomore infielder Josh Satin, plus senior stalwart Allen Craig and several other key performers. In the last three years, Esquer’s recruiting classes have been ranked fifth, eighth and seventh in the nation. Beyond these accomplish- ments, the Cal mentor has also been instrumental in securing several improvements at Evans Diamond, including the Carl Van Heuit Training Center that provides the Bears with new indoor batting cages, bullpens and work-out facilities. At age 40, Esquer has amassed a career record of 175-161 (.521), including leading the Bears to the 2001 NCAA Regional and being named the 2001 Pac-10 Coach of the Year. During the 2001 season, Cal finished 34-25 overall, but more importantly the Bears advanced to a NCAA Regional for the first time since 1995. Cal’s 34 wins in 2001 and 2005 are the most single season victories since 1992 when the Bears placed seventh at the College David Esquer has been involved in nine NCAA Regionals, two World Series.
