Help Keep Summer Safe and ‘Sound’: Leave the Fireworks to the Professionals.

Summer is coming, and so is the 4th of July celebration. This summer, leave the fireworks to the professionals. “Fireworks are illegal in Thornton, that includes everything,” says Thornton Fire Community Safety and Information Officer Sabrina Iacovetta. “We’re asking residents to not buy them, and not to light any in Thornton.” Fireworks are dangerous to people and property. In the past, the 4th of July holiday has been the busiest day of the year for firefighters. “They’re out extinguishing fires caused by fireworks, and answering emergency calls regarding fireworks injuries” says Iacovetta. One of the most serious fireworks-caused fires was in July, 2018. A fireworks-caused fire left 33 people displaced, including 19 adults and 14 children. “It’s very easy to eliminate these kinds of fires and injuries by simply not buying the fireworks, and celebrating the holiday at the fireworks show put on by the professionals,” says Iacovetta. Last year, Thornton launched an awareness campaign to let residents know about the dangers of fireworks. Thornton residents placed signs in their yards, and some went door-to-door talking with their neighbors, and left door hangers reminding people that all fireworks are illegal in Thornton, and violations will result in a mandatory fine between $500 and $1,000. “ That awareness effort made a big difference,” says Thornton Police Commander Paul Hawkins. “Our emergency communications center saw calls regarding fireworks drop dramatically last year, down almost 50 percent.” As a result, you’ll see that fireworks campaign continue this summer. “We actually heard from a number of residents who were really supportive of the campaign,” says Hawkins. “They like the idea of a safer holiday celebration, as well as a quieter one.” For more information on the city’s A fireworks-caused fire in Thornton in July 2018 left 33 people displaced, including 19 adults and 14 children. fireworks awareness campaign, visit cityofthornton.net.
