These changes may involve such matters as tuition and fees, courses, degrees and programs offered, degree and other academic requirements, academic policies, rules pertaining to student conduct and discipline, fields or areas of concentration, and other rules and regulations applicable to students. Notification of any significant policy change is made to the student body via The Week and the Community Portal. Please direct questions about the information in this Student Handbook to [email protected]. ​ Introduction Mission and Values Our Mission: Nurturing critical wisdom for the sake of the world The Minerva Schools at KGI offer an unparalleled educational program designed to prepare our students to be exceptional problem solvers and decision makers, able to work together to develop new and effective ways to address the most complex Minerva Schools at KGI is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). 7 challenges faced by society. The Minerva educational journey has been designed to enhance student learning outcomes providing an environment of deep intellectual learning paired with a breadth of experiences to develop our students holistically. The undergraduate education is interdisciplinary and multidimensional. It develops students’ intellects across disciplines, imparts critical life skills, builds professional capabilities, and reinforces key aspects of personal character. We strive to put students on a strong trajectory that continues to accelerate after graduation. Our greatest satisfaction is seeing and celebrating the accomplishments of our graduates. Our Guiding Principles These principles work with one another, adding a dimension to our work and decision making, and when all the principles work together the results are extraordinary. Being Unconventional Being Thoughtful Being Confident Being Human Being Selective Being Authentic Being Driven Our Integrated Learning Outcomes (ILOs) Minerva seeks to provide a living and learning environment that promotes personal growth and development, fosters students’ self-sufficiency, values wellness, builds community and responsibility, and prepares students for their next steps after graduation. Minerva has adopted five related learning outcomes in which students are expected to develop over time. They represent the knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes that students will develop through the synthesis of academic and non-academic learning experiences. We believe that learning experiences at Minerva should be holistic and cohesive so that learning in class is connected to and reinforced by learning out of class, and vice versa. Therefore the outcomes expressed here are also reflected in Habits of Mind and Foundational Concepts that are introduced and applied in the first year and throughout students’ four years of study.     8-9 Self-Management, Health & Balance Values and Directions What Is Self-Management, Health, and Balance and Why Is It Important? Graduate school demands a great deal from us. We stretch our minds exploring vast territories of knowledge, we push ourselves physically in managing responsibilities to our academic work, our jobs, and our families and communities. We never get enough sleep or rest… we neglect friends, family, and health… we are distracted by social media… we have too much cofee, guilt, and eyestrain. To succeed and to flourish, we must ensure that we look after the sources of our motivation and energy. These sources are rooted in the strengths we build in body, mind, and spirit. And so, success demands that we know ourselves, acknowledge our strengths and limitations, seek out ways to nourish these strengths and work through our limitations, and find the resources that can help us do this. In short, finding a balanced approach to wellness lays a strong foundation for sustained work and success. So one way that I express and experience my faith is through dance. I started learning kathak, an Indian classical dance, when I was about 7. It used to be a temple dance, and you would dance it to devotional songs. I don’t know if most people think of dance as a religious experience, but a lot of those devotional songs are very personal for me, so dance has been a very helpful tool to keep me connected to my faith. It’s my way of sharing my culture and my faith with other people. “Back at home, my religious experience was very community-related. My family would tell the old stories. That community has been a little harder to find here. There is a Hindu community, but it’s such a varied and diverse community that those aspects don’t necessarily come up as much.
