Date Activity Consultancy reminded Client to share approved responses to Small Enterprise Magazine queries. 3-Jan Client informed Dr. Shukla is traveling and hence approved responses will come in second week of January. Consultancy met senior faculty members Prof. Ganesh, Prof. Kavita Gupta and Prof. Solanki for 3-Jan details on women entrepreneurs, National Conclave on Social Entrepreneurship and success stories in food processing sector respectively. Earlier EDII had invited Mrs. Shailini Amin Sheth, CEO, Moralfibre Fabrics for lecture on ‘Fabrics & 4-Jan Beyond’. ET (Gujarati) and Sandesh carried news of the same, which was shared with Client.

Prof. Ganesh shared details of women entrepreneurs 6-Jan trained by EDII under various SBUs.
Consultancy discussed about activities and cluster development undertaken by EDII in West Bengal with Prof.Kaushik Mukherjee. Prof. Mukherjee informed he 10-Jan shall share specific cluster development activities that EDII had undertaken actively by the end of month, as he is continuously traveling. Consultancy asked Prof. Mukherjee to share EDII-specific details that can be shared with media. Client informed Consultancy about visit of Dr. Sunil Shukla to New Delhi on Jan 18. Client informed Consultancy about visit of Mautiritian delegation to EDII. Client shared pictures of delegates’ visit and asked Consultancy to disseminate the same 20-Jan in media. Consultancy disseminated a write-up and pictures of the same. Coverage appeared in The Times of India, NavGujarat Samay and Gujarat Samachar, which was shared with Client. Consultancy shared draft media invite, checklist and target media list for conference planned on Jan 27. 24-Jan Client approved media invite and asked Consultancy to disseminate the same. Consultancy met Prof Raman Gujral and got updates on Accenture and HP project managed by EDII Bangalore. Prof Gujral informed Consultancy he would 24-Jan not like to do media activities around Accenture and HP projects as that would be riskier proposition since competing funds would get to know of EDII activities and projects. EDII signed an MoU with Kaziranga University of Assam for introducing MBA in Entrepreneurship & 24-Jan Development. News was covered by few online portals, which was shared with the Client. Consultancy initiated a meeting of Mr. Raman Gujral with Ashoke 11- Jan Joshi, Head – CSR, Srinivasan Services Trust (of TVS Group). Meeting took place in Chennai on January 11.
Consultancy lined-up a telecon on 16th January with Ms. Manju 13 - Jan Dhasmana, Head – CSR, Microsoft India and Mr. Raman Gujral, Head – South India, EDII
Consultancy re-approached Ms. Upasana Pathak of Michele Dell Foundation regarding a meeting with Dr. Shukla. Further to this she responded that Dr. Shukla should directly email to Dell 17-Jan Foundation Head Mr. Debasish Mitter in regard to the area of interests/discussions that can take place between EDII and MSDF so that he can decide on the future course of action. Consultancy scheduled a meeting of Mr. Manoj Kumar of Tata 19-Jan Trusts and Mr. Raman Gujral of EDII at their office in Bangalore on 25th January.
Consultancy representatives met Mr. Raman Gujral at EDII 24-Jan campus to discuss way forward for meetings with corporate.
Post meeting Mr. Gujral of EDII, Mr. Manoj Kumar informed 25-Jan consultancy that he would like to visit EDII campus on 23rd or 24th February. Consultancy informed the same to client.
Consultancy lined-up a meeting of Mr. Jatin Trivedi, Head- Skill 30-Jan Development, Adani Foundation with Dr. Shukla at EDII campus on 6th February.

Entrepreneurship development institute of India enabled over 300 entrepreneurs in 7 years
AHMEDABAD: Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India (EDII) announced on Friday that it has enabled more than 300 entrepreneurs, who passed its PGDM in Business Entrepreneurship (PGDM-BE) course since 2008-10. According to data provided by the institute, more than 70% of its students either set up their own business enterprise or joined their family business on completing their course at the institute.
Sharing his success story of being an EDII alumnus, Nishank Shah, said, "I realized there were no processes to manage and treat waste that is generated from institutes, households, corporates as well as industries. Smelling business opportunity there, I decided to start a venture that helps treat dry and food waste at source."
Dr Sunil Shukla, director, EDII, said, "Our aim is to enable students to explore business opportunities. Apart from harnessing the knowledge of students, our incubator CrAdle also helps incubate startup models of students. While we help with seed funding in the range of Rs 2.5 lakh to Rs 3.5 lakh, we have also facilitated students in attracting more investments and funding through several schemes of the government."
"We've facilitated an opportunity for startups incubated at CrAdle to attract a disbursement fund of Rs10 crore from the Department of Science and Technology, for startups in manufacturing, healthcare, renewable energy and food processing," added Shukla.

DST to decide in Feb on EDII’s viable enterprises
The Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, will take a decision on further assistance in February with regard to the viable enterprises selected by the Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India (EDII) here. EDII has already provided non- refundable grants of up to Rs. 3.5 lakh as seed funding to each to its students registering companies with viable business options. Around 10 such students have benefited this way, said Dr Sunil Shukla, Director, and Dr Satya Acharya, Associate Senior Faculty, told reporters here on Friday.
Over 70% of students since the 2008-10 batch — around 337 out of 427 students — on completion of their two-year PGDM-Business Entrepreneurship course have either set up their own enterprises or have joined their family businesses. The remaining students have gone for a service career in the corporate or academic sectors and some for further studies. The PGDM-BE program now offers milestone-based learning so that the students begin their entrepreneurship journey while studying at EDII itself, they added.
To encourage entrepreneurship, EDII had set up a technology business incubator, known as the Centre for Advancing and Launching Enterprises (CrAdLE), two years ago. It is an initiative as a Section 8 firm under the Companies Act, 2013, supported by DST. It aims at developing sustainable and nurturing environment for technology entrepreneurs and has identified four focus areas for the purpose — manufacturing, food processing, renewable energy and healthcare. The DST’s selection of startups would mean they would no longer require seed funding.
CrAdLE has, so far, received around 40 startup ideas. Those identified as financially and business-wise viable usually get mentors and investors for support with EDII working as a facilitator. They said the technology business incubator aimed at assisting companies in their early stages of development and, to the extent possible, lighten the burden of running a business. It also provides a mechanism for technology transfer, promotes the concept of growth through innovation, application of technology and support business. “The primary goal is to produce organizations that will leave the incubation program as a self-supporting organization during the startup period when they are the most vulnerable.” CrAdLE provides support in the context of business planning and milestone tracking, legal advice on governance, intellectual property, licensing, corporate law, deal structuring, finance and accounting support, seed fund for milestone specific projects, product marketing and manufacturing strategy support, networking opportunities with angel, venture capitalists and other emerging businesses.

On the occasion of a media briefing in the institute about the success story of its unique two years PGDM in Business Entrepreneurship (PGDM-BE) programme, Director Sunil Shukla also said that the EDII was assisting the government of Gujarat and the Union government for policy framing and improvement with regard to the MSME sector.
Shukla said that Gujarat was quickly catching up as a favourite destination for start-up entrepreneurs. 'Gujarat has many friendly policies for the start-ups and it is the only state to hold a start-up summit (Vibrant Gujarat Start Up Summit). "No other state has organized such an event so far,' he said replying to a query about the state lacking in a robust eco- system for start ups like that in southern city of Bangalore.
To another question he said that it was not correct to think that one need be academically brilliant to be an outstanding entrepreneur. He said that the some of the academic in- competencies like those regarding knowledge of English can be bridged with basic courses. He also said that EDII focuses on SME's and creating more of an entrepreneur unlike the management institutes like IIM's which in his view focus on managerial skills meant for bigger corporate organizations.
He said that he agreed that the SME sector, especially the micro part of it needed assistance to come out of the difficulties it was facing. He said that the institute was assisting government of Gujarat and the Union government with regarding to policies, particularly about the clusters.
Talking about the PDGM-BE programme, Shukla said that it offers an innovative milestone- based learning initiative whereby every student can build their new enterprise step by step while studying at EDII itself. Out of 427 students who have passed out of EDII’s PGDM-BE programme since 2008-10 batch, around 337 have either started their own enterprise or have joined their family business. years have gone for a service career in the corporate sector or in academics and some for further studies.
“Milestone-based learning is introduced for students to enable them to get practical exposure to every minute step that is required to set up a new business even while they are pursuing their studies at EDII. Right from ideating, preparing a business plan, to how to form and register a new company and then how to start running this enterprise and managing various functions of marketing, finance, product/service development, etc. EDI also provides seed funding to successful milestone bonus point achievers for setting up their new venture," he said.
Dr. Satya Acharya, Associate Senior Faculty at EDII who heads the PGDM-BE programme added, “This course ensures that students harness their entrepreneurial knowledge, networking skills and abilities to set up own enterprise or join their family business to take it to newer heights. EDII also extends thorough mentoring support to help students start, progress and sustain a venture. With EDII’s own incubator CrAdle becoming functional from next month, students will have to additional option of pitching their start-up model here and may get selected. It is also to be noted that nearly half of the students who pass out of the PGDM-BE course go and join their family business. Here too there are many cases where the students start their own new business and do not join their family business.”

Exit barriers for MSMEs not given much attention, says EDII director
Even as rising number of sick Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) units continue to plague Gujarat, the Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India (EDII) in Ahmedabad is reportedly working in ‘policy formation’ for MSMEs at both the state- and central-level to counter this through policy interventions. In 2016, close to 42,500 MSME units reported sick in the state, the number second only to Uttar Pradesh (UP) and Maharashtra. Commenting on this, EDII Director Sunil Shukla said, “We have been involved with both the centre and the state governments in evolving and strengthening an MSME policy and also working with the SMEs in Rajkot, Vadodara, Jamnagar in Gujarat.
There are three kinds of barriers for MSMEs and basically one is entry barrier: why people don’t come, which is where entrepreneurship comes into place and once they come then there is a growth barrier; in which there are issues of taxation and incentives. The third and the most crucial point in which not a lot of attention is given is ‘exit barrier’. Even today to shut down a company is not that easy. It takes at least five years to close down a company. Entrepreneurs should have the freedom and flexibility that if a business is no more viable then they should be able to close it and start another unit.”
Adding that intervention in this issue by EDII would also mean students managing ‘sick’ units in the state, Shukla pointed out Mumbai-based alumni Rajesh Pandey, a serial entrepreneur and current student Ruhi Pradhan who revived a sick textile unit in Vapi last year. Shukla added, “There is a stigma attached to failure, people are not differentiating that failure of an enterprise is not the failure of an entrepreneur- both are two different things. In developed nations, if someone fails there then he declares himself ‘bankrupt’ and then he or she can go to a financial institution and start another enterprise. So all this should be encompassed in a policy for MSMEs and a large number of our MSMEs are from the ‘micro segment’.
Our alumni from the first batch Rajesh Pandey is a ‘serial entrepreneur’ based in Mumbai who has been buying only sick enterprises that are on the verge of closing down, turning it around and then he moves on to the next project.”
Ruhi Pradhan who revived and took over a sick textile unit in Vapi told the paper, “In just three months since I took over, we bagged three big work orders from e-commerce players of manufacturing 45,000 units and now have a staff of 51 people, including 10 odd people who had lost their jobs earlier.”

While, many of the alumni have used their training at EDII to successfully scale up their existing business, some have spin-off and started their own new ventures.
Chintan Sharma, who graduated from the institute in 2011-13 with a PGDM-BE, joined his family business in 2013. Today, he is the CEO & Director of Narmada Toyota, one of the leading Toyota dealership in the state of Gujarat which has sold more than 4,500 cars and serviced more than 40,000 cars till date. Chintan, who specialized in the family business area, attests to the program’s practical and creative approach that has helped him professionally to take sound business decisions and expand his operations.
Taking cue from the program’s on innovative and hands-on methods of learning, Nakul Mistry, Director of Scientific Clock Manufacturing Co. and a PGDM-BE 2010-2012 alumnus, took his family business of manufacturing wall and tower clocks to another level. As a new blood in a 68 years old business, Nakul doubled the production capacity within a year. The support from EDII faculty, high standard of workshops and interaction with alumni and visiting faculty, helped him acquire practical knowledge to handle the business.
Nishank Shah, Founder and CEO of Duro Green and a PGDM-BE 2012-2014 alumnus, observed that there was no process in place for managing and treating waste generated from institutes, households, industries, corporate and other places at source. He sensed a business opportunity and decided to treat dry and food waste at the source. His enterprise is successfully churning wealth out of waste. Nishnak is today a well-known proponent of Swatchh Bharat Mission and is invited at various reputed forums to share his experiences.
Jay Meria, Founder & CEO of Muvr.in, from the 2013-15 batch, set up a technology-based logistic solution providing company. MUVR is a revolutionary approach that makes pickups and deliveries thoroughly efficient and reliable. Company has only 135 SCV owners on its platform when it started in June 2015 and a year later it has over 1600 SCV owners and gets 80% of its business from the commercial segment like retailers, wholesalers, traders, distributors and SMEs.
