Volume 13, Issue 8 Secretary’s Column Roger Powell All members will be disturbed at the news of Ian Cook's sudden illness. He has been in Campbelltown Hospital recently, following a heart attack. Ian has always been a very active and knowledgeable member of MAS since the Society's inception in 1996 and was due to be our guest speaker again this month. He will need to take a back seat for a while but we all hope that he makes a full recovery and is back with us again very soon. Meanwhile, the Society was very pleased to make a profit of $523.00 from the recent Guessing Competition. Many thanks to Kate Johnston for being the Competition Organiser. Our winners were drawn at the last meeting and were: First Prize: Don Jephcott (Telescope) Second Prize: Michael Wells (Binoculars, donated by BINTEL) Third Prize: Geoff Young (Book signed by Fred Watson) This month, the Society has received two letters regarding the recent flurry of laser pointer legislation. Firstly, the Ministry for Police provided us with a summary of the recent NSW legislation and MAS is now seeking free registration by the NSW Police as an astronomical society. This will enable our members with laser pointers to be exempt from applying for a personal possession permit. Due to the fact that members of the Society will be covered by the Society's registration, the committee has decided to create a voluntary register of members who possess hand-held, battery operated laser pointers. Forms will be provided and should you wish MAS to keep your details on file, please fill one out and give it to me or send it to: PO Box 17, Minto, NSW 2566. In the event of a problem occurring between a member and the police, such a register may assist both parties. The committee is also discussing the provision of membership cards for next year's membership, to assist in quickly identifying membership of a registered astronomical society to police. Secondly, the Federal Minister for Home Affairs, Bob Debus, has written to advise us that Australian Customs will be providing guidance to assist legitimate users in understanding the permission process for the importation of laser pointers. Members may be aware that many other organisations are now making their magazines available on the web. For example, we receive ten printed copies of BINTEL's 'Night Sky' but if you miss out you can download it from their website at https://www.bintelshop.com.au/NightSky/NightSky.pdf The committee has decided to provide dual publication of 'Prime Focus' in both printed and electronic form. Accordingly, we are asking members, where possible, to visit the website before each monthly meeting and read 'Prime Focus' online, instead of picking up the printed version at the meeting. If you are unable to do this, then the printed version will still be available as usual. Our Editor, Kate Johnston, is also collaborating with Chris Malikoff to place online a full archive of every past version of 'Prime Focus', beginning with 2008. This will be available in stages over the next few months (depending on how busy Kate gets with the Society's newest member, expected next month)! If the terminator has progressed far enough, you might spot tiny Blagg and Bruce to its west, the rough location of the Surveyor 4 and Surveyor 6 landing area.

We will have on hand some of the gear that was donated to the club this summer, including mirrors, lenses, blanks, telescope parts, and even entire telescopes. Come check out the bargains and visit with your fellow amateur astronomers in a relaxed evening before Christmas. We also encourage people to bring any new gear or projects they would like to show the rest of the club. The meeting is at 7:00 on December 22nd at EWEB’s Community Room, 500 E. 4th in Eugene. For our orbital analysis we use 150 precise RV measurements taken at the Lick Observatory between 2000 and 2011, and we combine them with RV data for this star available in the literature. Using a stellar mass of M = 2:7 M for ν Oph and applying a self-consistent N-body model we estimate the minimum dynamical companion masses to be m1 sin i 22:2 MJup and m2 sin i 24:7 MJup, with orbital periods P1 530 d and P2 3185 d. We study a large set of potential orbital ≈ ≈ ≈ 2≈ configurations for this system, employing a bootstrap analysis and a systematic χν grid-search coupled with our dynamical fitting model, and we examine their long-term stability.

No ornery clouds or“washout”; virtually the entire three-hour duration had an unobstructed view of the Sun. Over an hour before the start of the event, we sold 196 solar viewers in thirty-five minutes. Several families and children used cereal box viewers; many, many people were here for the first time. We utilized the Coronado Solar Max II solar telescope and several nighttime telescopes, each outfitted with either a standard eyepiece or a “sun funnel”—a modified oil funnel that projects light sent through the scope tube to fabric stretched across the front of the funnel. We provided live feeds on the main floor from NASA and then, ABC News. The official count at 1089 patrons makes this the best- attended event in HRPO’s twenty years save for the historic Mars Opposition of 2003.

    CLUSTERS, NEBULAE & GALAXIES A NOVICE OBSERVER’S HANDBOOK By: Prof. P. N. Shankar PREFACE In the normal course of events, an amateur who builds or acquires a telescope will use it initially to observe the Moon and the planets. After the thrill of seeing the craters of the Moon, the Galilean moons of Jupiter and its bands, and the rings of Saturn he(*) is usually at a loss as to what to do next; Mars and Venus are usually disappointing as are the stars (they don’t look any bigger!). If the telescope had good resolution one could observe binaries, but alas, this is often not the case. Moreover, at this stage, the amateur is unlikely to be willing to do serious work on variable stars or on planetary observations. What can he do with his telescope that will rekindle his interest and prepare him for serious work? I believe that there is little better for him to do than hunt for the Messier objects; this book is meant as a guide in this exciting adventure. While this book is primarily a guide to the Messier objects, a few other easy clusters and nebulae have also been included. I have tried, while writing this handbook, to keep in mind the difficulties faced by a beginner. Even if one has good star maps, such as those in Norton’s Star Atlas, a beginner often has difficulty in locating some of the Messier objects because he does not know what he is expected to see! A cluster like M29 is a little difficult because it is a sparse cluster in a rich field; M97 is nominally brighter than M76, another planetary, but is more difficult to see; M33 is an approximately 6th magnitude galaxy but is far more difficult than many 9th magnitude galaxies.

The detection of part of the radial velocity anomaly caused by the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect shows that the transit-like events detected by CoRoT are caused by a planet-sized transiting object in a prograde orbit.

From existing projects or simply conversations, research ideas appear, are developed, take shape, sometimes take a detour into some un- expected directions, often need to be refocused, are sometimes divided up and/or distributed among collaborators, and are (hopefully) published. After a number of these cycles repeat, something bigger may be born, all of which one then tries to simultaneously fit into one’s head for what feels like a challenging amount of time. That was certainly the case a long time ago when writing a PhD dissertation. Since then, there have been postdoctoral fellowships and appointments, permanent and adjunct positions, and former, current, and future collaborators. And yet, con- versations spawn research ideas, which take many different turns and may divide up into a multitude of approaches or related or perhaps unrelated subjects. Again, one had better figure out with whom one likes to work. And again, in the process of writing this Brief, one needs create something bigger by focusing the relevant pieces of work into one (hopefully) coherent manuscript. It is an honor, a privi- lege, an amazing experience, and simply a lot of fun to be and have been working with all the people who have had an influence on our work and thereby on this book.
