  • SOLARCON India 2013 Begins with Charging the Solar Industry to Innovate, Collaborate & Execute
SOLARCON India 2013 Begins With Charging The Solar Industry To Innovate, Collaborate & Execute Speaking at the inauguration to the industry leaders Shri Amita Prasad, IAS, Energy Secretary, Govt.of Karnataka said, "Innovate, Collaborate and execute.‖ Solar power has the immense capacity to bring in stability to the fluctuating electricity tariffs in India as it is cheaper than thermal and domestic coal. States have realized that solar sector is positive as most solar radiation in the worst part of India is better than the best part of Europe. Solar is a serious area to work for large scale projects in India. We can add large capacities to rooftop solar projects and I am glad that states have understood the momentum of the big future of the grid connected roof tops‖ included Shri. Tarun Kapoor, IAS, Jt. Secretary, MNRE. Mr. K. Subramanya, Chairperson, SEMI India PV Advisory Committee sharing his views said, ―Standardization of the solar products is necessary. Bankers need to be involved to increase budgetary support. Technology up gradation is essential. Respectability for the sector needs to be attained. As investors are looking for uncertainty, solar lobbying is required to be made. Dr. Harish Hande, Managing Director, SELCO India and winner of the Ramon Magsaysay Award in the inaugural key note said, ―Off grid is the market for India. Innovation, resilience, guts to fight the challenges are the key takeaways for the solar industry leaders. Social engineering will alone make this industry succeed. Solar power industry can apply the insights taken from the business models existing in other industry sectors‖.

  • Renewable Energy in India: Policies, Trends and Foreign Direct Investments in Research and Development
Renewable Energy in India: Policies, Trends and Foreign Direct Investments in Research and Development By: Aditya Prasad Bhagwat1 and Rajnish Tiwari2 Abstract Adopting Renewable Energy (RE) has become a necessity for achieving different development goals, for a fast growing economy and a demographically young country like India. At the same time intense Research and Development (R&D) and business activity in the domestic RE sector has become necessary to ensure the spread, affordability and efficacy of RE according to local needs. In a rapidly connecting and increasingly inter-dependent world, collaborative activities on an international level are important to finance growth, gain technical knowledge and promote cost effective manufacturing in a relatively new sector such as RE. Studying different types of collaborations e.g. manufacturing and R&D etc. while keeping focus on the future of RE in India is therefore important to understand business opportunities. At the same time capturing a larger picture of the situation in RE sector while focusing on the influence of different aspects on foreign collaboration e.g. policy influence on investment or on collaborative R&D is certainly needed to understand the challenges. Keywords: frugal innovation, India, renewable energy, collaborative R&D, local needs Note: An edited version of this paper has been published as a book chapter in “Lead Market India: Key Elements and Corporate Perspectives for Frugal Innovations”, edited by C. Herstatt and R. Tiwari. Suggested citation: Bhagwat, A. P. and R. Tiwari (2017). Renewable Energy in India: Policies, Trends and Foreign Direct Investments in Research and Development. The future is beckoning India. And India must embrace the future with alacrity. That India is facing a severe power shortage is well known. People and businesses in many countries in the West and the East take 24x7 power supply for granted. In India, growth-crippling power cuts are a common occurrence in most parts of the country. The peak power shortage is growing; in 2013 it is over 10 per cent. In some regions, such as in southern states, it is more than 26 per cent. The power sector is beset with many problems. About 25% of India's power generation capacity remains unutilised due to fuel scarcity, inefficient equipment and maintenance shutdown. The problem is worsened by huge losses in transmission and distribution. Add to this our country’s growing dependence on import of high-cost coal, which continues to be the principal fuel for power generation, and we get a scenario of rising prices of inadequate power from conventional ─ read, polluting ─ sources. The scale of the problems of import burden and pollution gets immensely magnified when we take into account India’s huge dependence on oil from alien sources to meet its rapidly growing energy needs.
