Visul se risipise. Vălul căzuse și realitatea își arătase adevăratul chip, cu atât mai hidos, cu cât speranțele fuseseră mai înflăcărate. Aproape toată lumea cunoaște astăzi povestea: invitat la aniversarea a zece ani de la revoluția bolșevică, Panait Istrati pornise spre Moscova, în toamna anului 1927, cu așteptări atât de mari – iar propaganda sovietică știuse să i le facă să pară atât de îndreptățite și de veridice – încât nu i s-a părut cu nimic exagerat să anunțe că s-a hotărât să devină cetățean al URSS După aproape doi ani de la aceste declarații înflăcărate, ieșea de sub tipar, sub semnătura sa, o carte care avea să scuture din temelii imaginea creată de propaganda sovietică lumii noi de la răsărit – Spovedanie pentru învinși. După șaisprezece luni în URSS. Istrati se declara învins și recunoștea astfel că tot ceea ce susținuse în legătură cu „modelul de umanitate” înălțat peste ruinele Rusiei țariste fusese o iluzie ca multe altele. Cum s-a ajuns aici? Unde se înșelase Panait Istrati? Declarațiile sale de adeziune fuseseră expresia unei credințe profunde sau numai efectul unor influențe bine instrumentate? Se amăgise „Gorki al Balcanilor”, cuprins de „mirajul bolșevismului”? Care fusese drumul său de la implicarea în disputele sindicale, de la grevele din portul Brăila, până la admirația pentru Lenin, liderul care găsea în „reprimarea fără milă” izvorul puterii bolșevice? Să fi fost Panait Istrati victima unei imense confuzii între ideologia social- democrației și platforma teoretică a revoluției bolșevice? N-ar fi fost singurul ademenit de „lupta” pentru dreptate, pentru o lume lipsită de exploatare. -

UTOPIA CONSTRUCTIVĂ A MONOGRAFIEI HENRI H. STAHL’S CONTRIBUTION TO THE SOCIOLOGICAL MONOGRAPHS OF THE BUCHAREST SCHOOL OF SOCIOLOGY ALINA JURAVLE* ABSTRACT This study is an attempt to shed light onto Henri H. Stahl’s contribution to the sociological monographs that were the core of the Bucharest School of Sociology’s activity. Stahl is presented as an active member of the School, bringing into it his own background and abilities, distinct or shared views, values and interests and then impacting it through his actions which, combined with other factors, distinctively change and shape its development. As such, the study is also not an attempt to summarize his theoretical developments and to compare and place them in rapport with those of other social scientists. The purpose of this study is to expose at least partially the degree to which the knowledge that Stahl generates and uses differs in shape and contents from that of Dimitrie Gusti, regarding the manner in which it is used in his course towards a certain role and status in the School, the manner in which his course in the School develops, and the manner in which his personal characteristics and options, group and organizational developments and the wider social context interact in order to shape published sociological knowledge. alexander clapp ROMANIA REDIVIVUS nce the badlands of neoliberal Europe, Romania has become its bustling frontier. A post-communist mafia state that was cast to the bottom of the European heap by opinion- makers sixteen years ago is now billed as the success story Oof eu expansion.1 Its growth rate at nearly 6 per cent is the highest on the continent, albeit boosted by fiscal largesse.2 In Bucharest more politicians have been put in jail for corruption over the past decade than have been convicted in the rest of Eastern Europe put together. Romania causes Brussels and Berlin almost none of the headaches inflicted by the Visegrád Group—Czechia, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia— which in 1993 declined to accept Romania as a peer and collectively entered the European Union three years before it. Romanians con- sistently rank among the most Europhile people in the Union.3 An anti-eu party has never appeared on a Romanian ballot, much less in the parliament. Scattered political appeals to unsavoury interwar traditions—Legionnairism, Greater Romanianism—attract fewer voters than do far-right movements across most of Western Europe. The two million Magyars of Transylvania, one of Europe’s largest minorities, have become a model for inter-ethnic relations after a time when the park benches of Cluj were gilded in the Romanian tricolore to remind every- one where they were. Indeed, perhaps the aptest symbol of Romania’s place in Europe today is the man who sits in the Presidential Palace of Cotroceni in Bucharest. Klaus Iohannis—a former physics teacher at a high school in Sibiu, once Hermannstadt—is an ethnic German head- ing a state that, a generation ago, was shipping hundreds of thousands of its ‘Saxons’ ‘back’ to Bonn at 4,000–10,000 Deutschmarks a head. -
Patterns of Violence in Greek and Romanian Rural Settings
JOURNAL OF ROMANIAN LITERARY STUDIES Issue no. 10/2017 PATTERNS OF VIOLENCE IN GREEK AND ROMANIAN RURAL SETTINGS Catalina Elena Prisacaru KU LEUVEN Research Assistant Intern Abstract: The following paper brings a contribution to researches carried out in the field of anthropology and social sciences on the issues of rural violence. The study focuses on the collective memory and imagery documents recorded and depicted in literature, seeking to uncover patterns of rural violence, taking as a case study two novellas representative for Greek and Romanian rural settings. The findings note the affinities and shared patterns between these two cultural settings and reveal the complexity of the Greek characters and the points of divergence between the patterns of violence of rural Greece and Romania. Keywords: rural violence, Karagatsis, balkanism, patterns of violence, homo balcanicus Introduction Research reveals (e.g. Asay, DeFrain, Metzger, Moyer, 2014; NationMaster 2014) both Greece and Romania stand high in terms of violence and anthropologists (e.g. Du Boulay 1986) stress particularly on rural violence. To this we bring our contribution in the following paper, resorting to collective memory and imagery documents as recorded and depicted in literature, to point out some patterns of behaviour that bring these two settings together regarding rural violence. It is not to say other cultural settings cannot be fitted in this frame, but for practical purposes, rigueur, and close ties between these cultural spaces, we have selected Greece and Romanian rural settings. The endeavour is theoretically compelling as much has been argued on the resemblances between Greek and Romanian cultures under the frame of Balkanism. -

Narrating the Communist Prison: An Interpretive Model of Some Romanian Case Studies Oana Fotache Contents I. Introduction. Critical response to the prison literature in post-communist Romania. II. An ethical and historiographical perspective. Abstract After the fall of the communist regime in Romania (1989) an impressive number of books, diaries, memoirs that recorded the prison experience of the ‘50s and early ‘60s were published. These books were authored by very different individuals, representing almost all the social classes of the time, with a diverse educational background, or intellectual level, not to mention the quality of their writing. Several studies on this literature were published (Ruxandra Cesereanu, Gulagul în conștiința românească. Memorialistica și literatura închisorilor și lagărelor comuniste. Eseu de mentalitate/ The Gulag in the Romanian Conscience. Communist Prison Memoirs and Literature. An Essay of Collective Mentality, 2005; Mihai Rădulescu, Istoria literaturii române de detenție. Mărturisirea colaborării/ History of the Romanian Political Detention Literature. The Confessing of Collaboration, 1998; Ion Bălan, Regimul concentraționar din România. 1945-1964/ The Concentrationary Regime in Romania. 1945- 1964, 2000, to mention only the most significant). Their purpose was generally informative and evocative. Though many typologies and groupings were suggested, a poetics of the genre was not yet elaborated. The present paper attempts at proposing an interpretive model of the ‘prison literature’ genre that situates it at the crossroads of history and autobiographical literature. It also tries to adapt Michel Foucault’s analysis of the prison (in Surveiller et punir, 1975/ Discipline and Punish, 1977) to the context of the communist epoch and to study the narrative devices employed by the writers in order to ‘tame’ this unthinkable – yet also very real – life experience. -

After war, while sociology was abolished by the communist political regime, anthropology survived under the leadership of the physician Ștefan Milcu, an ex-member of Rainer’s team. As Director of the Anthropological Research Centre, Milcu took over the idea of monographical research ‒ this time from a bioanthropological perspective. However, he invited to researches a few social scientists to cover some aspects of demography, family studies, ethnography etc. Among them, especially Traian Herseni and Vasile Caramelea (under the protection identity of “demographer”, “or statistician”) produced outstanding contributions to the monographs of the villages Clopotiva, Bătrîna, Nucșoara & Cîmpu lui Neag ‒ all of them in the district of Hațeg, an ancient county of great importance for understanding the genesis of the Romanian people. A collateral super-eff ect of this activity was the foundation ‒ în 1964, at Vasile Caramelea’s initiative ‒ of the Section of cultural anthropology in the organization of the Anthropological Research Centre. -

Szidonia Haragos Escape Words: From Solitary Confinement to Female Solidarity in Lena Constante’s Post-Communist Prison Memoirs Abstract: This article argues that the representative post-Communist autobio- graphical texts by Romanian writer Lena Constante, based on the author’s per- sonal experience of twelve years of incarceration in Communist Romania’s noto- rious political prisons, trace a gradual transformation from solitary confinement to female solidarity. While the first of the two memoirs, The Silent Escape, invokes the power of the literary and creative imagination in surviving eight years of sol- itary confinement, the second part, The Impossible Escape, reveals the growing sense of community among the imprisoned women, their shared sense of suf- fering that was often induced by torture and frequently endured as a hardship marked by gender (for instance, the misery menstruating women undergo in the absence of the most basic sanitary equipment, with one of them barely surviving a haemorrhage). Recalling her memories years afterwards, Constante composes an autobiography that testifies to the difficulty of writing about the enormity of the atrocities she experienced. Often recording sheer rows of numbers on the page and struggling with silence because words seem to betray reality, her two-part memoir bears witness to a repressed collective past and thus offers a powerful countermemory and alternative history of Romanian totalitarianism. Keywords: memoirs, post-Communist autobiography, women writers The two-part memoir by Lena Constante, The Silent Escape: 3000 Days in Roma- nia’s Prisons and The Impossible Escape: The Political Prison for Women, Miercu- rea-Ciuc, 1957–1961, stands out amongst post-Communist autobiographical texts partly due to its sheer shock factor: it is the recording of a radical “indeterminacy” (Agamben 2005, 3), the span of twelve years lived within the political prisons of Communist Romania, out of which eight years were spent in solitary confinement. -

Slyomovics, Co-Chair This dissertation explores exilic human rights literature as the literary genre encompassing under its aegis thematic and textual concerns and characteristics contiguous with dissident literature, resistance literature, postcolonial literature, and feminist literature. Departing from the ethics of recognition advanced by literary critics Kay Schaffer and Sidonie Smith, my study explores how human rights and narrated lives generate larger discursive practices and how, in their fight for justice, diasporic intellectual networks in France debate ideas, oppressive institutions, cultural practices, Arab and European Enlightenment legacies, different traditions of philosophical and religious principles, and global transformations. I conceptualize the term francité d’urgence , definitory to the literary work and intellectual trajectories of those writers who, forced by the difficult political situation in their home countries, make a paradoxical aesthetic use of France, its ii territory, or its language to promote local, regional, and global social justice via broader audiences.
