CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION A. Background of the Study the Movie CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION A. Background of the Study The movie which the researcher wants to research is Street Dance. This movie directed by Max Giwa and Dania Pasquini. Written by Jane English and produced by Allan Niblo and James Richardson. StreetDance 3D (also called StreetDance in the non-3D version) is a British dance film. The film was released in RealD 3D, XpanD 3D, and Dolby 3D with Max Giwa and Dania Pasquini directing it. The movie consists of the best actress and actor Nichola Burley as Carly, Richard Winsor as Tomas, and Ukweli Roach as Jay. It was first release in the 19 May 2010 (France) and 21 May 2010 (United Kingdom). This movie consists running time of more than 98 minutes. Budget Street Dance movie £3.5 million. Box Office Opening Weekend: £2,493,948 (UK) (23 May 2010) (412 Screens) and Gross: $17,695,464 (UK) (13 September 2010). Music is Street Dance movie by See below. Cinematography is Street Dance movie by Sam McCurdy and Editing by Tim Murrell. The movie soundtrack album was written and performed by alternative acts N-Dubz, Tinie Tempah, Lightbulb Thieves, and Chipmunk. The film is a production of Vertigo Films in association with BBC Films. N-Dubz composed the official soundtrack. The song "We Dance On", featuring Bodyrox, was sent to music stations on 22 April. 1 2 In inner city London, a street dance crew is on the verge of breaking up after its leader, Jay (Ukweli Roach) leaves the group unexpectedly. The group loses the use of their rehearsal space, forcing them to try to raise money or practice in other locations. Eventually they secure a space in a ballet school, on the condition that they include five ballet dancers in their routine. At first, they struggle to get along, but they all become friends in the end. One of the teachers at the ballet school, Helena (Charlotte Rampling), takes Carly (Nichola Burley) to a ballet where she starts getting ideas for their routine. When she arrives home, Carly finds Jay waiting for her and the two spend the night together. During a dance battle in a club the next night, the teams learn that Jay has betrayed the team by joining The Surge, a rival crew. Jay brags about his sex with Carly and Tomas (Richard Winsor), a ballet dancer, punches Jay out of anger. Jay is furious and swears revenge. Carly, upset over the betrayal, leaves the club and is nearly hit by a car before Tomas pulls her out of the way. Tomas then takes Carly back to his apartment where they dance on the roof, eventually kissing. Carly then leaves him alone on the roof, while they both look at the sunrise and smile. The next day at the school, Carly announces the new name of their dance crew: Breaking Point. Another teacher at the school, outraged that her students are being corrupted, deliberately plans a Royal Ballet audition for the same day as the street dance finals. The ballet dancers promise Carly they will make it, but the auditions were running overtime. 3 In an attempt to give Breaking Point more time to wait for the ballet dancers, Carly's friend Eddie (George Sampson) goes out onto the dance floor and starts dancing, surprising the crew and wowing the audience. The ballet teams turn up at the final anyway, and their teacher Helena drives the judges to the final so they can see the dancers perform. The routine is a success, Carly and Tomas kiss during the performance, and the crowd is enthralled. Jay is furious that The Surge has been beaten and he's lost Carly. The responses of public of these volumes are in variation, Ashleti stated in Street Dance movie that “When I saw the first title "Street Dance 3D" I seriously thought this trailer was a joke, like a spoof movie. I thought there was no way this could be a serious movie when the title alone is such an obvious rip off "Step Up 3D.' Sadly I've overestimated the film industry.” Camilla Lindqvist and groterichard stated in Street Dance, Love this movie! This movie is good ! According to the explanation above, literary work has the same significance in meaning as understanding human’s emotion with inner-self problem. Since literature is the exposition of human emotion, it can be said that literary works has relationship to psychology. Literary works and psychology have the same object of the research that s human being. According to Adler in (Ryckman 1985:95), individual psychology is a science that attempts to understand the experiences and behavior of each person as an organized entity. He believes further that all actions are guided by a person’s fundamental attitudes toward life. 4 In the other statements Adler in (Feist 1985:64) states that individual psychology insists on fundamental unity of personality. All apparent dichotomies and multiplicities of life are organized in one self-consistent totally. No definite division can be made between mind and body, between conscious and unconscious or between reason and emotion: All behavior is seen in relation to the final goal of superiority or success. This goal gives direction and unity to the individual. In Psychological theory there are many emotions. Different people have different emotional expression in their life. According to Atwater (1983:80), “an emotion is a complex state of awareness involving inner sensations and outer expressions that has the power to motivate us to act. According to Feldman, (2003:268) Emotion in a general definition is feelings that generally have both psychological and cognitive elements and that influence behavior. There are many theories emotion such as the James-Lange theory, the Cannon-Bard theory, and Schechter’s Cognitive Theory. The writer wants to apply the psychological theory as the base problems analysis in the study. Meanwhile, emotional expression is a relationship psychology. Literature and psychology have close relationship. In the following discussion emotional expression of Carly can give inspiration for writer to produce literary work. In this movie the writer can find the character and characterization, plot of story, lighting, setting, theme, and can see how to the story be retell of the actor and actress. The movie sometimes can gives moral messages for the 5 spectator. Making a movie is different from making novel, poetry, and drama. Making a movie needs a lot of time and needs a professional team work which cooperates with others, a team work involves many people as a crew. A crew has a different function and the job in the process of making movie. Movie has many elements such as a director, costume, producer, costume designer, lighting, cameramen, scriptwriter, producers, artist and actors, music composer. Besides, it also needs some techniques and terminologies to understand it, including signs, editing, sound, mise-en- scence, and cinematography. Street Dance is interesting movie for many people. There are four points the reason why the writer choosing this movie, to make this movie interesting. Firstly, this study is crucial to be conducted psychology of emotional expression in our life. So, the writer know identify expression and control of emotions. Secondly, in this movie Carly (Nichola Burley) shows that many emotional expressions is really and gives story the journey she looking for her life and Tim to get the happiness. The researcher wants awareness of our emotion in persons. Thirdly, the present writer, I will be a teacher and this project is necessary to be carried out to widen, enlarge more knowledge to her/his professional competence as teacher, this research to be hope for get profit to the teacher’s recruit eventually. The researcher turns to analyze the movie by using Psychological Perspective. 6 Finally, the last reason is to supply theoretical framework in the research literature in the English Department about that research. This research appropriates with Psychological Perspective. So, it can see the phenomena the characterization in this movie is strong. In correspond to the explanation above; the writer is trying to analyze the view of Max Giwa and Dania Pasquini in his movie. This movie Street Dance represents emotional expression of Carly’s. So, with the background above attracts the writer to analyses the movie within psychological perspective frame work into her research paper entitled: Emotional Expression of Carly in Max Giwa’s and Dania Pasquini’s Street Dance Movie (2010): An Individual Psychological Approach B. Previous Study As long as the writer has looked for several literature reviews in Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta and all around of Surakarta region, she has not found the research Street Dance movie done by the other researcher. So, the writer cannot compare this researcher with other researcher because this is the first study of Street dance movie. The writer uses individual psychological approach to analyze the data and using of Street Dance movie as an object. 7 C. Problem Statement The Problem Statement of the study is as follows: “How is Emotional Expression of Carly reflected in Max Giwa’s and Dania Pasquini’s Street Dance Movie (2010?” D. Limitation of the Study In this research, the researcher will focus on the analysis of the major character of Street Dance Movie (2010): the aspect of An Individual Psychological Approach. E. Objectives of the Study The objectives of the study are the following: 1. To analyze Emotional Expression of Carly in Max Giwa’s and Dania Pasquini’s Street Dance Movie (2010) based on its Structural Element. 2. To analyze the film especially the Emotional Expression of Carly in Max Giwa’s and Dania Pasquini’s Street Dance Movie (2010): based on it’s An Individual Psychological Approach developed by Feist and Adler.
