54 Journal of European Baptist Studies 19:1 (2019) ‘To communicate simply you must understand profoundly’: The Necessity of Theological Education for Deepening Ministerial Formation1 Anthony R. Cross This paper explores the vital role that theology has played for those called to serve the people of God as ministers. It seeks to demonstrate that, from their beginnings in the early seventeenth century, Baptists have believed that a theologically educated ministry is a necessity. This belief led Baptists to pioneer the dissenting academies, which in time became colleges, and to be key figures in the development of education which has benefitted the whole Baptist tradition and church of God. Contrary to misconceptions among Baptists, and, we should add, those of other traditions, Baptists have always had men, and in time also women, who have been highly trained theologically, and who have made significant contributions to the churches they have served. Finally, it argues that theology and an educated ministry have major roles to play in the renewal of Christian life and witness for which so many Christians today are praying. Keywords Theology; education; ministry; pastor-theologians; Baptist colleges; biblical languages; mission; Bible translation Introduction I feel a sense of urgency about this subject, as the amount of time allotted to theological study within education for the Baptist ministry has lessened markedly in recent decades – some feel drastically – from full-time to part- time, and sometimes even less, and sometimes now not even at a Baptist college or recognised theological college. Much of present-day British Baptist life does not emphasise the necessity of theology for ministerial formation or for Christian discipleship in the way it has for over 400 years.2 Contemporary British culture does not place a high premium on education, and this pattern is undoubtedly mirrored among the churches. -

'The Sum of All Good': John Ryland, Jr. and the Doctrine of the Holy Spirit MICHAEL HAYKIN Introduction In a letter which the Welsh evangelist Howel Harris (1714-1773) wrote to George Whitefield (1714-1770) in 1743, Harris provided his friend with what can well be regarded as a classic description of the eighteenth century Evangelical Revival: 1 The outpouring of the Blessed Spirit is now so plentiful and common. that I think it was our deliberate observation that not one sent by Him opens his mouth without some remarkable showers. He comes either as a Spirit of wisdom to enlighten the souL to teach and build up. and set out the works of light and darkness. or else a Spirit of tenderness and love, sweetly melting the souls like the dew. and watering the graces; or as the Spirit of hot burning zeaL setting their hearts in a flame, so that their eyes sparkle with fire. love and joy; or also such a Spirit of uncommon power that the heavens seem to be rent. and hell to tremble. Given the extent of this outpouring it is no surprise to find eighteenth century evangelicals preoccupied with the doctrine of the Holy Spirit. Whitefield, for instance, preaching on the phrase 'and thy glory' from 2 Is. 60:19 could declare: · The ministers of Christ must take care that they do not preach an unknown God. and we must take care we do not pretend to live upon an unknown God. a God that is not appropriated and brought home to our souls by the efficacy of the Spirit. -

CROSS International Baptist Theological Study Centre, Amsterdam ABSTRACT. Using principally, though not exclusively, the learning of the biblical languages, this paper seeks to demonstrate four things. Firstly, from their beginnings in the early seven- teenth century the majority of British Baptists have believed that the study of theology is essen- tial for their ministers, and that the provision of such an education through their colleges is necessary for the well-being of the churches. Secondly, and contrary to misconceptions among Baptists and those of other traditions, Baptists have always had ministers who have been highly trained theologically, and that this has enriched their service as pastors. Thirdly, it reveals that Baptists today have a wealth of both academically-gifted and theologically-astute pastor- theologians and pastor-scholars. Finally, it argues that theology has always played its part in the renewal of Christian life and witness for which so many Christians today are praying. The Life of William Carey by George Smith PREFACE On the death of William Carey In 1834 Dr. Joshua Marshman promised to write the Life of his great colleague, with whom he had held almost daily converse since the beginning of the century, but he survived too short a time to begin the work. In 1836 the Rev. Eustace Carey anticipated him by issuing what is little better than a selection of mutilated letters and journals made at the request of the Committee of the Baptist Missionary Society. It contains one passage of value, however. Dr. Carey once said to his nephew, whose design he seems to have suspected, “Eustace, if after my removal any one should think it worth his while to write my Life, I will give you a criterion by which you may judge of its correctness. If he give me credit for being a plodder he will describe me justly. Anything beyond this will be too much. I can plod. I can persevere in any definite pursuit. To this I owe everything.” In 1859 Mr. John Marshman, after his final return to England, published The Life and Times of Carey, Marshman, and Ward, a valuable history and defence of the Serampore Mission, but rather a biography of his father than of Carey. When I first went to Serampore the great missionary had not been twenty years dead. During my long residence there as Editor of the Friend of India, I came to know, in most of its details, the nature of the work done by Carey for India and for Christendom in the first third of the century. -

“A GREAT THIRST FOR READING”: ANDREW FULLER THE THEOLOGICAL READER MICHAEL A.G. HAYKIN “Mr. Fuller possessed considerable taste for reading: but as he had not time to consult many authors, his knowledge…was less various than profound” —John Webster Morris n his recent magisterial biography of William Wilberforce (1759–1833), William Hague notes that among the deepest joys of the great abolitionist’s life were his friendships and that he made it a rule to “never omit any opportunity to become acquainted with any good or useful man.”1 This meant, as his sons later observed, that his house was “seldom free from guests,” some Iof whom would arrive early enough in the day to join Wilberforce at his breakfast and all of whom would provide a field for Wilberforce’s remark- able conversational skills.2 Among the guests whom Wilberforce received at his home was the Baptist theologian Andrew Fuller, whose theological abilities Wilberforce deeply admired.3 On one occasion, Wilberforce endeavoured to quickly introduce Fuller to one of his sons after his arrival had been announced. “You know Andrew Fuller?” he asked him. “No, I never heard his name,” came the reply. “Oh then you must know him,” Wilberforce said, “he is an extraordinary man, whose talents have EUSEBEIA > SPRING 2008 5 “A GREAT THIRST FOR READING”: ANDREW FULLER THE THEOLOGICAL READER raised him from a very low condition.” Fuller came in, Wilberforce later noted in his account of the visit by the Baptist author, “a man of con- siderable powers of mind,” but bearing “very plainly the vestigia ruris,” for he looked “the very picture of a blacksmith.”4 True to Wilberforce’s description, Fuller lacked formal education beyond the basics of reading and writing, but his “great thirst for reading”—something he once said of his confidant John Sutcliff (1752–1814) of Olney5 but a description that fit him perfectly—enabled him to become the leading Baptist theologian of his day. -
Andrew Fuller's Two Conversions
Andrew Fuller’s Two Conversions Dr. David Saxon Session 1 The subject of our four sessions today is Andrew Fuller, 18th-century Particular Baptist pastor. Is he really worthy of this level of detailed scrutiny and interaction? I learned about Fuller and the revival of evangelical Calvinism in Particular Baptist church life from Dr. Beale at Bob Jones University in the late 1980s. I don’t recall, however, recognizing Fuller’s significance or, indeed, the importance of the developments in this phase of Baptist history until Michael Haykin, British scholar who taught for a number of years in Canada before settling down at SBTS in Louisville, began publishing about it. He wrote a biography of Fuller’s friend John Sutcliff in 1994,1 in which Fuller appears as a very significant figure. In 2000 Tom Nettles wrote a biographical sketch of Fuller that Haykin included in volume 2 of his four-volume The British Particular Baptists 1638-1910.2 A year later Haykin published a short volume in his spirituality series on the spirituality of Fuller.3 An explosion of interest in Fuller has followed. Haykin now heads the Andrew Fuller Center for Baptist Studies, which publishes a periodical, Kettering, holds an annual conference, and is producing a 15-volume collection of Fuller’s writings. Over the last fifteen years or so, numerous volumes covering virtually every aspect of Fuller’s ministry have appeared, with an excellent modern biography published in 2015 to celebrate the bicentennial of his death.4 Of course, I’ve read all of it. That was my first attempt at humor in this conference. -

1 Michael A.G. Haykin HYPER-CALVINISM AND THE THEOLOGY OF JOHN GILL The story of how the English Baptist William Carey (1761–1834), a cobbler by training, became the learned father of the modern missionary movement is a well-known one to Baptists and has rightly become central to their thinking about the nature of Baptist identity.1 One aspect of that story which has been used numerous times in missionary appeals and sermon illustrations has to do with a rebuke that Carey received not long after he had begun preaching.2 The rebuke came from John Collett Ryland (1723–92), who was quite eccentric and was one of the most colourful characters of the eighteenth-century English Baptist community.3 At a meeting of the pastors of the Northamptonshire Baptist Association on September 30, 1785, Ryland, who was one of the senior pastors of that body, asked Carey to propose a topic that they could discuss that day. Carey suggested a question that had been running through his mind for some time: ―Whether the command given to the apostles to teach all nations was not binding on all succeeding ministers, to the end of the world, seeing that the accompanying promise was of equal extent.‖ Carey’s 1 On Carey’s life, the classic studies are those by his nephew and grandson: Eustace Carey, Memoir of William Carey, D.D.
