Zartman INTRODUCTION Bedrock of the Chelan 1:100,000 quadrangle displays a long and varied geologic history (fig. 1). Pioneer geologic work in the quadrangle began with Bailey Willis (1887, 1903) and I. C. Russell (1893, 1900). A. C. Waters (1930, 1932, 1938) made the first definitive geologic studies in the area (fig. 2). He mapped and described the metamorphic rocks and the lavas of the Columbia River Basalt Group in the vicinity of Chelan as well as the arkoses within the Chiwaukum graben (fig. 1). B. M. Page (1939a, b) detailed much of the structure and petrology of the metamorphic and igneous rocks in the Chiwaukum Mountains, further described the arkoses, and, for the first time, defined the alpine glacial stages in the area. C. L. Willis (1950, 1953) was the first to recognize the Chiwaukum graben, one of the more significant structural features of the region. The pre-Tertiary schists and gneisses are continuous with rocks to the north included in the Skagit Metamorphic Suite of Misch (1966, p. 102-103). Peter Misch and his students established a framework of North Cascade metamorphic geology which underlies much of our construct, especially in the western part of the quadrangle. Our work began in 1975 and was essentially completed in 1980.

It provides habitat for the federally threatened bald eagle (Ha/iaeetus leucocephalus), special status animals and plants, and numerous other animal and plant species. Fish Lake Bog has received considerable interest in, and appreciation of, its natural values from local conservation organizations and regional universities (see Hansen 1941 ). The area was recommended for inclusion in the RNA network prior to 1977, at which time the Regional RNA Committee requested that public use of the area be assessed to determine the appropriateness of the RNA designation (Research Natural Area Committee meeting notes, November 18, 1977).

Much of this 323 acre state park is covered by second growth coniferous forest, but the park also includes sev- eral thousand feet of lake shore along Lake Wenatchee, a half acre island, and two thousand feet of shoreline along the Wenatchee River as it leaves the lake. The habitat bordering the lake and river form botanically complex wetlands in mid-sum- mer, as the water level drops, adding considerably to the botani- cal and biological diversity contained in the park. Methods Yellow avalanche lily,Erythronium Rare plant surveys grandiflorum, one of the first flowers to bloom at Lake Wenatchee State Park. and community vegetation surveys were conducted simultaneously. Plant community polygons were initially delineated remotely using orthophotos and ASTER satellite images. These tentative community assignments were then ground checked for accuracy and for dominant plant associ- ations.     Recreational considerations in the lower White River Robes Parrisha, Jason Lundgrenb, and Peter Jenkinsa Restoration of stream channels requires a great deal of care and planning with consideration paid not only to the ecological needs of the river, but also how those prescriptions intersect with societal demands and uses of the river. While the ecological needs can often be quantified and categorized in a systematic, scientific manner, the social issues are sometimes more difficult to identify and address. One of the principal modern-day human-uses of rivers is for recreation. The type, location, magnitude, and season-of-use varies considerably for each river—even reach-to-reach—and must be considered uniquely for each restoration proposal. This paper attempts to summarize what is known about the lower White River (Chelan County, WA) from the Sears Creek Rd bridge to Lake Wenatchee and how the proposed Large Wood Atonement Project accounts for this use. Project Details The White River Large Wood Atonement Project is being proposed jointly by the Cascade Columbia Fisheries Enhancement Group and the US Fish and Wildlife Service. The project aims to “increase the trajectory of natural ecosystem recovery by increasing the retention time of existing, mobile woody material (WM).” The lower river’s ecological and geomorphic function has been considerably diminished by riparian timber harvest (as recently as the mid-1980s) and associated ‘river cleaning’ to facilitate log drives (Figure 1). The removal of the natural WM and riparian logging has had a number of significant impacts to the instream and floodplain environments, similar to what have occurred in other Pacific Northwest rivers (Figure 2).
