III. IN-COUNTRY SITUATION

After a four-year of implementation, GENESIS has been one of the most successful projects in USAID´s DO1 strategy. More than 70% of the indicators have been accomplished and an important amount of resources have been mobized from the GOH, municipalities, and the private sector. Demonstrating that self-reliance is possible. Implementing more than 80 community activities every month is very challenging for the GENESIS team, not only for the high-risk of working in the most dangerous communities but also for the permanent crisis and shocks that Honduras experiences. Thousands of Hondurans are taking the streets oftenly. They are tired of austerity measures, corruption, and lack of basic services, especially health and education. Educators and health care workers denounced a controversial presidential decree about an express permission to drastically cut expenditures, privatize their respective sectors, and fire individuals for holding certain political views. Soon after taking the streets, they were joined by disgruntled farmers, and taxi and truck drivers. Most recently, the Honduran police joined the protests too, demanding the state to provide them uniforms, pay for petrol and grant them holidays - things to which they are officially entitled. Even with these difficulties, GENESIS did not stop its work trying to bring hope to communities where people think there are no opportunities and showing that it is possible to work, grow and provide to their families here, living and staying in Honduras.

The OC has been supported by the “Patronato Pro-mejoramiento Colonia Suyapa’, in La Ceiba. The community board is represented by Karla Zuniga, who has taken leadership since the beginning of the implementation of this OC in the community and very involved in its affairs.

stakeholders approached by the Suyapa OC.

Likewise, it assumed covering other operational costs with their own budget for the sustainability of the center. These costs are related to public services (water, electricity, internet,), operational support for the development of programmatic activities carried out in the community, volunteer management, and the counterpart report, which is Partner Karla Zuniga supporting beneficiaries from Social registered monthly. Familias Solidarias de Honduras, led by Yaneth Contreras took up on the challenge to convert the Centro de Transformación Comunitaria para Familias Solidarias (Community Transformation Center for Solidary Families) into an OC to serve vulnerable youth, and adapting spaces for the OC methodology.

Over the years, “Familias Solidarias” created synergies with other institutions to attract resources and methodologies that strengthen OCs, developing programmatic activities, delivery of equipment to women who have been domestic violence victims, the development of a wall of virtues in educational centers, delivery of toys, training of volunteers as facilitators of the “Construyendo Ciudadania” program, early pregnancy and sexual transmission infection prevention.

7. Opportunity management of the USAID Workshop on Engaging the Local Private Sector: A trip was made to the city of Washington DC, participating in a co-creation workshop for organizations worldwide, attended by more than 30 organizations that have experience in private sector involvement for local development. During the workshop, topics such as identification of gaps and opportunities to work with the private sector were worked on, involving cross-cutting issues such as the rights of women, children, youth, ethnic populations. The inputs obtained from this workshop would be used to prepare a proposal to be delivered to USAID in January 2020. During the course of the FUNADEH workshop, different organizations approached us from Serbia, Uganda, Colombia and El Salvador, which will work with us on proposals as co-applicants, thus increasing the possibilities of obtaining financing. After the workshop, the FUNADEH team that traveled to Washington held meetings with Creative International to present the current status of the GENESIS project, the achievements that FUNADEH has made as legacy partner with the Outreach Centers, and discuss potential areas of collaboration between both organizations. A meeting was also held with DAI, to present the new vision of FUNADEH in the short and long term, also identifying potential future partnership opportunities. The requests of four organizations from different countries (Uganda / USA, Colombia, Serbia and El Salvador) have been followed along with participating in proposals such as allies
