Leaves alternate, frequently rosulate. Capitulum solitary or capitula loosely to more densely aggregated, sometimes forming a secondary capitulum, ligulate, homogamous, with 3–5 to ca. 300 but mostly with a few dozen bisexual florets. Receptacle naked, or more rarely with scales or bristles. Involucre cylindric to campanulate, ± differentiated into a few imbricate outer series of phyllaries and a longer inner series, rarely uniseriate. Florets with 5-toothed ligule, pale yellow to deep orange-yellow, or of some shade of blue, including whitish or purple, rarely white; anthers basally calcarate and caudate, apical appendage elongate, smooth, filaments smooth; style slender, with long, slender branches, sweeping hairs on shaft and branches; pollen echinolophate or echinate. Achene cylindric, or fusiform to slenderly obconoidal, usually ribbed, sometimes compressed or flattened, apically truncate, attenuate, cuspi- date, or beaked, often sculptured, mostly glabrous, sometimes papillose or hairy, rarely villous, sometimes heteromorphic; pappus of scabrid [to barbellate] or plumose bristles, rarely of scales or absent. -

S. Hitchcock and Paul C. Standley published their succinct manual in 1919 for the identification of the vascular flora in the Washington, DC, area. A comparable new manual has long been needed. As with their work, such a manual should be produced through a collaborative effort of the region’s botanists and other experts. The Annotated Checklist is offered as a first step, in the hope that it will spark and facilitate that effort. In preparing this checklist, Shetler has been responsible for the taxonomy and nomenclature and Orli for the database. We have chosen to distribute the first part in preliminary form, so that it can be used, criticized, and revised while it is current and the second part (Monocotyledons) is still in progress. Additions, corrections, and comments are welcome. We hope that our checklist will stimulate a new wave of fieldwork to check on the current status of the local flora relative to what is reported here. When Part II is finished, the two parts will be combined into a single publication. We also maintain a Web site for the Flora of the Washington-Baltimore Area, and the database can be searched there (http://www.nmnh.si.edu/botany/projects/dcflora). -

Abstract Youngia zhengyiana, a new species of Youngia sect. Mesomeris (Asteraceae: Crepidinae) from Guizhou province of south China is described and illustrated. The placement of this species within Youngia is assessed based on a molecular phyloge- netic analysis of the nuclear ribosomal ITS and on morphological comparisons with related species. The new species can be easily distinguished by morphology from the only species known to possess 5 florets, Y. szechuanica. The infrageneric classification and the recently debated circumscription of Youngia are discussed in the light of the nrITS phylogeny, which includes several species for the first time. Pseudoyoungia is confirmed as a congener of Youngia. The redefined Youngia is still non-monophyletic with Lapsanastrum nested within it. -

Introduction The cyto-genetic and taxonomic studies of Crepis, which have now been carried on for sixteen years, have amply demonstrated the value of this genus for such studies (Babcock and Navashin, 1930, Hollingshead and Babcock, 1930, Babcock and Cameron, 1934). In order to gain a better understanding of the origin and relationships of Crepis, and of the evolutionary processes in the subtribe Crepidinae as a whole, a study of the various other genera of this subtribe has been undertaken. This paper is intended as a preliminary report on this work, and presents the results obtained to date on the genera most nearly related to Crepis, and which have been studied sufficiently so that conclusions concerning them can be drawn. Of the six genera included in this report, only two, Lactuca and Ixeris, have been previously examined cytologically to any extent. Ishikawa (1921) reported on the meiotic chromosomes of both of these genera, and obtained cytological evidence that Ixeris should be recognized as distinct. Marchal (1920) recorded, without illustra tions, the haploid number n=8 in Lactuca perennis and L. virosa, counts that have proved erroneous (see below), while Gates and Rees (1921) made a careful study of meiosis in L. Scariola and L. sativa, obtaining the haploid number n=9 for these two species and L. muralis. In addition, the chromosome number of Lactuca (as Mulgedium) tuberosa has been counted by Poddubnaja-Arnoldi (ex Tischler 1936), of Ixeris dentata by Okabe (1932), of L (as Lactuca) denticulate by Heitz (1929), of Youngia (as Crepis) japonica by Tahara (1910) and Hollingshead and Babcock (1930), of Y (as Lactuca) depressa and of Dubyaea hispida (as Crepis bhotanica) by Babcock and Cameron (1934). -

Clarke, C. atripappa Babc.,Youngia gracilis Hook. f. ex Babc. & Stebbins Youngia stebbinsiana S.Y. Hu and Y. atripappa (Babc.) N. Kilian are discussed. Y. atripappa (Babc.) N. Kilian is considered as correct name for the species following Kilian’s observation. The status of remaining names is also ascertained. Typification of Crepis atripappa Babc. is analyzed and the name is lectotypified following provisions of the present Code. Information on the rediscovery of the species after 105 years from India as well as of its type locality is provided. Population estimation was carried out in three successive years, from 2013 to 2015. Detailed description, illustrations, field photographs with related data are also provided for proper circumscription and to facilitate its correct as well as easy identification.
