Beneficial Use Support Document Conotton Creek Basin 2016 Conotton Creek at New Cumberland Road, RM 11.4 Division of Surface Water Ecological Assessment Section May 2021 Ohio EPA:DSW/EAS Conotton Creek Basin Use Support 2016 May 25, 2021 Introduction Ohio EPA conducted a comprehensive biological, habitat and water quality survey of the Conotton Creek watershed in 2016. While some limited sampling has previously been conducted on the Conotton Creek mainstem, most of the existing data date back to the 1980s. Few tributaries within the basin have ever been sampled by Ohio EPA prior to 2016. Most (22) of the 25 streams designated within the Ohio water quality standards are, therefore, not verified based on survey data. In addition, other tributaries within the basin remain undesignated. Figure 1 depicts the 2016 Conotton Creek basin study area and locations where sampling occurred, which included eleven locations arranged along the 43-mile long mainstem. Additional sampling occurred in twenty-five tributaries throughout the Conotton Creek watershed, which drains an area of 286 mi2 in Figure 1. The 2016 Conotton Creek Basin Study Area. Carroll, Harrison and Tuscarawas counties and which lies entirely within the Western Allegheny Plateau ecoregion in eastern Ohio. Conotton Creek is a major tributary of the Tuscarawas into which it discharges at river mile 65.5. Conotton Creek has been previously surveyed by Ohio EPA and it carries a verified warmwater habitat aquatic life use designation in the Ohio WQS that was validated by the 2016 survey once again. Most of the designated waterbodies in the Conotton Creek drainage basin are based on the original 1978 and 1985 state water quality standards. The techniques in use at that time did not include standardized approaches to the collection of in-stream biological data or numeric biocriteria. The 2016 study used biological field data consisting of an assessment of biological communities, a habitat assessment and water quality data to assess current conditions to either verify the existing ALU or recommend a new ALU (Table 2). Results of the biological and habitat assessment for each station sampled in 2016 are presented in Table 3 and the macrohabitat features are found in Table 5. The biological criteria for the WAP ecoregion are summarized in Table 4. Recommendations A total of 12 sites were sampled on the Conotton Creek mainstem from SR 151 (RM 41.6) to near the mouth (RM 0.2). The biological and habitat data collected during the 2016 survey continued to support the current WWH designation. All but one site near the mouth fully attained the WWH biocriteria (Table 1 Ohio EPA:DSW/EAS Conotton Creek Basin Use Support 2016 May 25, 2021 3) with some individual scores reaching into the very good to exceptional range, though not in a consistent fashion. Aside from the Conotton Creek mainstem, twenty-five tributaries were also surveyed for aquatic life use potential in 2016. The biological and habitat data for eleven streams or stream segments supported the verification of the current WWH designation, denoted in Table 2 as (*/+). These include the following streams: Huff Run, Beggar Run, Indian Fork, Elliott Run, Willow Run, Pleasant Valley Run, Cold Spring Run, Gantz Creek, Thompson Run, McGuire Creek and Dining Fork from Kirby Run (RM 1.78) to the mouth. In addition, seven Figure 2. Irish Creek at RM 3.02 previously undesignated streams were documented to support, or have the potential to support the WWH use designation, including unnamed tributaries to Conotton Creek at RMs 7.67, 11.37, 17.22 and 28.20, Honey Run, Friday Creek, and the unnamed tributary to Indian Fork at RM 3.30. Five streams in the upper portion of the watershed that are either undesignated or currently designated WWH support a coldwater habitat (CWH) use recommendation based on the cold water adapted fauna residing within (Table 1). These streams include Bear Hole Run, Long Creek, Lick Fork, Dining Fork (headwaters to Kirby Run (RM 1.78) and Irish Creek (headwaters to Lick Fork (RM 3.09). Bear Hole Run, Kirby Run, Long Creek, North Fork McGuire Creek and McGuire Creek from its headwaters downstream to the unnamed tributary at RM 7.57 are recommended to be designated EWH based on the exceptional biological communities that were documented within these streams (Table 3). The two highest habitat scores within the entire Conotton Creek study area were recorded in North Fork McGuire Creek (Table 5). Table 1. Waterbody use designations and recommendations for the Conotton Creek study area. Designations based on the 1978 and 1985 Ohio Water Quality Standards are indicated with asterisks (*) while designations based on the results of a previous biological field assessment performed by Ohio EPA are symbolized using a plus sign (+). Verification of current designations based on this study are symbolized as (*/+) while a triangle (▲) denotes a new/revised recommendation use based on the findings of this study. Streams not assessed in this study are highlighted in gray. Aquatic life use attainment status for stations sampled in the Conotton Creek basin based on data collected June-October 2016. The Index of Biotic Integrity (IBI), Modified Index of well-being (MIwb), and Invertebrate Community Index (ICI) are scores based on the performance of the biotic community. The Qualitative Habitat Evaluation Index (QHEI) is a measure of the ability of the physical habitat to support a biotic community. The table is organized by stream name (River Code) – Ecoregion1 – Aquatic life use (ALU)2. Assessments are based on criteria for the recommended Aquatic Life Use Designations.
