A 1 1. Joe didn’t write the English test on Wednesday because he was ill and had to stay in bed. He was quite happy about it because it was a difficult test and Joe isn’t so good at English. Now he has more time to study, but he still isn’t well. His doctor said, “A sick child should not worry about school!”, and I think he’s right. 2. My dad always says that it wasn’t easy to be young when he was a kid. School was hard work, people didn’t have much money, and most parents were very strict. So I’m really happy to live in our days. School is okay, I have enough money, and my parents are great – most if the time. I feel good! 3. “Apollo 13” is an exciting film with some great actors. It is based on a true story: the dangerous accidents on the way to the moon and the heroic fight of the people in the space ship and on the ground to save the crew. For three long days, they worked very hard to repair the damage, and it worked! In the end, the men were safe and everybody was happy. 4. Grandma is an excellent cook. Her roasts and her pies are wonderful and her soups are very good, too. She uses very old recipes from her grandmother’s time, but she also tries out some new ones from time to time. Last Saturday, for example, she made roast lamb with exotic spices and wild rice, and it tasted fantastic! I think it will become my favourite dish! 5. Melanie is a very pretty girl. She has beautiful green eyes, long dark hair and a lovely smile. She is an outstanding student and a very gifted singer and dancer. But she has a big problem – she gets angry very often, and then she isn’t very nice.

B 2 1. Both the Irish and the Welsh speak a Celtic language. 2. The young can still learn a lot from the old. 3. The British, the French and the Dutch had colonies in Asia. 4. They say that at Halloween, the dead come back for one night. 5. The rich live in luxury, but the poor don’t have enough to eat. 6. What’s the English name of the western “Zwei glorreiche Halunken”? – I think it’s “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly“, although there are three and not two. 7. The Chinese and the Japanese eat with chop sticks. 8. In the USA, the whites still earn more money than the blacks. 9. There are special schools for the blind in our town. 10. Mother Teresa took care of the sick in the streets of Kolkata, India.

C 3 1. New cars are more expensive than old ones. 2. Old wines taste better than young ones. 3. Please give me the blue sweater, not the black one. 4. It’s easier to ski on short skis than on long ones. 5. As a young man, Dad drove cheap cars. Now he has an expensive one. 6. Tom is crazy! He prefers difficult tests to easy ones. 7. Mum, I need new jeans. – Why? What’s wrong with the old ones? 8. Why did you buy a new PC? – The old one was too slow for me. 9. There are only cheap tickets left. The expensive ones have all been sold. 10. Which dress should I wear? The old one or the new one? – I think you look better in the old one.
