Swedish Literature on the British Market 1998-2013: A Systemic Approach Agnes Broomé A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy UCL Department of Scandinavian Studies School of European Languages, Culture and Society September 2014 2 I, Agnes Broomé, confirm that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. …............................................................................... 3 4 ABSTRACT This thesis examines the role and function of contemporary Swedish fiction in English translation on the British book market in the period 1998-2013. Drawing on Bourdieu’s Field Theory, Even Zohar’s Polysystem Theory and DeLanda’s Assemblage Theory, it constructs a model capable of dynamically describing the life cycle of border-crossing books, from selection and production to marketing, sales and reception. This life cycle is driven and shaped by individual position-takings of book market actants, and by their complex interaction and continual evolution. The thesis thus develops an understanding of the book market and its actants that deliberately resists static or linear perspectives, acknowledging the centrality of complex interaction and dynamic development to the analysis of publishing histories of translated books. The theoretical component is complemented by case studies offering empirical insight into the model’s application. Each case study illuminates the theory from a different angle, creating thereby a composite picture of the complex, essentially unmappable processes that underlie the logic of the book market. The first takes as its subject the British publishing history of crime writer Liza Marklund, as well as its wider context, the Scandinavian crime boom.

BENNOUNE 4/11/2007 3:35:19 PM Articles Secularism and Human Rights: A Contextual Analysis of Headscarves, Religious Expression, and Women’s Equality Under International Law KARIMA BENNOUNE* This Article advocates an innovative contextual ap- proach to assessing the international legality of bans in public schools on “modest” garments claimed to be required by religious beliefs for Muslim women. Too often this has been considered solely a question of re- ligious freedom. This paper advocates the re- insertion of gender equality into the heart of the de- bate. To obtain results most conducive to reconciling the human right to religious freedom and the human right to gender equality, it examines restrictions on headscarves and veils in a novel matrix of factors, in- cluding pressures on individual women to wear or not wear such gear, the impact on other female students, fundamentalist organizing targeting education, Islamophobia, and the multiple meanings of veiling. Applying the contextual approach, this Article argues * Associate Professor, Rutgers School of Law—Newark. I would like to thank Elizabeth Espert and James McGhee for excellent research assistance. • Popular Film/Popular Feminism: the Critical Reception of the Rape-Revenge Film Jacinda Read, Demontfort University, UK
Popular Film/Popular Feminism: The Critical Reception of the Rape-Revenge Film Jacinda Read, DeMontfort University, UK "The issues surrounding the film are feminist. But the film itself is not." Thus argued Callie Khouri, writer of Thelma and Louise (Francke, 1991: 17). Despite Khouri's claims, the critical reception of the film, nevertheless, centred quite explicitly on assessing the film's status as a feminist text, therefore suggesting that it is not, in fact, possible to separate the textual ("the film itself") from the extra-textual ("the issues surrounding the film"). Indeed, as Richard Dyer's work on film stars illustrates, extra-textual material such as star personas, reviews and publicity material play an important part in the construction of any particular text's meanings, particularly its dominant or preferred meanings (Dyer, 1979 and 1987). Traditionally, feminist analyses of mainstream texts have read "against the grain" of these dominant or preferred meanings in order to produce resistant feminist readings. Here, however, I want to read "with the grain" of these dominant meanings as they are inscribed in reviews of The Accused (Jonathan Kaplan, 1988) and Thelma and Louise (Ridley Scott, 1991) in order to explore the ways in which they might produce popular, common-sense understandings of feminism. There are several reasons for my choice of these particular films. Firstly, they deal with an issue (rape) which, perhaps more than any other, defined the discourses of early second-wave feminism. Secondly, given that I am concerned to explore the processes through which these discourses have been popularized, these films have been selected on the basis that they represent mainstream and well-known articulations of these discourses.

ISSN 1462-317X (In Press) White Rose Research Online [email protected] The Mediation of the Distinction of “Religion” and “Politics” by the UK Press on the Occasion of Pope Benedict XVI’s State Visit to the UK Abstract One feature of modern political liberalism is its acceptance of the superiority of secular political reasoning over faith-based reasoning where matters of practical politics are concerned. The distinction religion/politics has become a defining feature of modern political liberalism. We examined how this distinction was mediated by the UK national press through a case study of its reporting of Pope Benedict XVI’s state visit to the UK in 2010. The case study evaluates the following four propositions: 1) “religion” is benign and relevant to “politics”; 2) “religion” is malign and relevant to “politics”; 3) “religion” is assumed to be irrelevant to “politics” but is dismissed positively; and 4) “religion” is regarded as irrelevant to “politics” but is dismissed negatively. We conclude there is a dominant shared assumption in the UK press supporting propositions two and three: that religion is a good thing when it conforms to a pre-existing narrative of political liberalism and a bad thing when it does not and that religion was judged in terms of its “political” values rather than in terms of its “religious” values.

Misogynies Joan Smith. London: The Westbourne Press, 2013. Reviewed by Helen Williams Last year, Misogynies was re-released alongside Smith’s new Book The Public Wom- an. Deemed a classic piece of feminist literature, Misogynies was first published back in 1989 and received critical acclaim. It was thought to have been responsible for invigorating feminism after a decade of new feminist and anti-feminist analyses such as Shirley Conran’s ‘insightful’ encyclopaedia of household management, Su- perwoman and Camille Pagalia’s feminist attack, Sexual Personae. The author, Joan Smith, is a novelist, columnist and human rights activist who restates the radical feminist position of discrimination based on sex (Brook, 1999). For Smith, we live in a misogynistic society which not only restricts female freedom but threatens any woman who dares step outside of the narrowly defined gendered lines it dictates. Misogynies consists of 18 short chapters or essays which explore and critically analyse various nuances of misogyny, drawing on examples from history, literature and popular culture. Chapters such as Doubting Thomas (chapter 1) and M’Learned Friends (chapter 2) draw attention to cases of rape and sexual harassment such as the legal case of Hill versus Thomas in 1991. A case, which although heralded for putting workplace harassment on the political agenda, ultimately led to defeat for Hill. While deemed a credible witness, passing a lie detector test, and whose testi- mony led to a number of other, previous employees coming forward to share their experiences of harassment at the hands of Thomas, Hill was made out to be a woman scorned, weaving malicious fantasies to get revenge over her ex-boss (20).

  • The Production and Consumption of Translated Fiction in the UK Between Cosmopolitanism and Orientalism
Around the World in English: The Production and Consumption of Translated Fiction in the UK between Cosmopolitanism and Orientalism Submitted by Perihan Duygu Tekgül As a thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Sociology In July 2012 This thesis is available for Library use on the understanding that it is copyright material and that no quotation from the thesis may be published without proper acknowledgement. I certify that all material in this thesis which is not my own work has been identified and that no material has previously been submitted and approved for the award of a degree by this or any other University. Signature: 2 Abstract This thesis analyzes discourses of identity construction in the production and consumption of translated fiction in the contemporary British book culture. Drawing from ethnographic methods, it investigates what middle class, engaged readers make out of the translated novels they read, particularly in the ways that these books have been produced and marketed to them. The study concludes that translated fiction illustrates the multilayered meaning structures regarding taste and identity in reading communities and in the publishing industry in contemporary Britain. The theoretical framework of the thesis is based on sociological and anthropological studies on identity, intercultural communication and the consumption of art, alongside theories of reading and literary exchange from literary studies and translation studies. Data for the analysis on reading has been collected through participant observation/focus groups at over 30 book group meetings. Research methods also include interviews with individual readers and publishing industry professionals. Analysis of reading communities concentrates on responses to translated novels as texts that have undergone linguistic transference and as stories that portray other cultures.

  • Orhan Pamuk's Novels and Their
ORHAN PAMUK’S NOVELS AND THEIR “AFTERLIFE” IN ENGLISH AND GERMAN TRANSLATIONS BY SEVINC TURKKAN DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Comparative Literature in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2012 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor Wail S. Hassan, Chair Professor Marilyn Booth, University of Edinburgh Professor Mahir Saul Assistant Professor Yasemin Yildiz Abstract In this dissertation, I focus on the Turkish Nobel Prize laureate Orhan Pamuk’s novels and on their English and German translations by Güneli Gün, Maureen Freely, and Ingrid Iren. I argue that literary translation is a creative act, the study and critique of which needs to be anchored within a specific historical, geographical, and temporal horizon. I studied the reception of Pamuk’s novels in translation and discovered that book reviewers write about translations as if they were transparent copies of the original works. Literary translation in a largely monolingual public sphere is thus overlooked. I provide a theoretical model for the study and critique of translations as autonomous texts beyond the evaluative notion of “fidelity” to originals. I devise a theoretical framework based on my close textual analyses of the translations. I situate translations within their respective context, read them in relation to particular historical circumstances that gave rise to them, and in relation to secondary material written by translators, ranging from creative writing, other translations, prefaces, introductions, afterwords, glossaries, and interviews. This approach elucidates each translator’s project, position, and intention. The introduction provides literature review and lays out the theoretical framework.
