Swedish Literature on the British Market 1998-2013: A Systemic Approach Agnes Broomé A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy UCL Department of Scandinavian Studies School of European Languages, Culture and Society September 2014 2 I, Agnes Broomé, confirm that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. …............................................................................... 3 4 ABSTRACT This thesis examines the role and function of contemporary Swedish fiction in English translation on the British book market in the period 1998-2013. Drawing on Bourdieu’s Field Theory, Even Zohar’s Polysystem Theory and DeLanda’s Assemblage Theory, it constructs a model capable of dynamically describing the life cycle of border-crossing books, from selection and production to marketing, sales and reception. This life cycle is driven and shaped by individual position-takings of book market actants, and by their complex interaction and continual evolution. The thesis thus develops an understanding of the book market and its actants that deliberately resists static or linear perspectives, acknowledging the centrality of complex interaction and dynamic development to the analysis of publishing histories of translated books. The theoretical component is complemented by case studies offering empirical insight into the model’s application. Each case study illuminates the theory from a different angle, creating thereby a composite picture of the complex, essentially unmappable processes that underlie the logic of the book market. The first takes as its subject the British publishing history of crime writer Liza Marklund, as well as its wider context, the Scandinavian crime boom. -

His picture differs from traditional nativity paintings, in that Mary’s hair is not covered but hangs loosely and naturally on her shoulders, and she’s dressed in the richly coloured brocade and velvet of a wealthy merchant’s wife. -

BENNOUNE 4/11/2007 3:35:19 PM Articles Secularism and Human Rights: A Contextual Analysis of Headscarves, Religious Expression, and Women’s Equality Under International Law KARIMA BENNOUNE* This Article advocates an innovative contextual ap- proach to assessing the international legality of bans in public schools on “modest” garments claimed to be required by religious beliefs for Muslim women. Too often this has been considered solely a question of re- ligious freedom. This paper advocates the re- insertion of gender equality into the heart of the de- bate. To obtain results most conducive to reconciling the human right to religious freedom and the human right to gender equality, it examines restrictions on headscarves and veils in a novel matrix of factors, in- cluding pressures on individual women to wear or not wear such gear, the impact on other female students, fundamentalist organizing targeting education, Islamophobia, and the multiple meanings of veiling. Applying the contextual approach, this Article argues * Associate Professor, Rutgers School of Law—Newark. I would like to thank Elizabeth Espert and James McGhee for excellent research assistance. Why I'm Not Going to the Church of Magnolia This Christmas on the Last Weekend Before Christmas There Seemed a Lot on TV That
Why I’m not going to the Church of Magnolia this Christmas On the last weekend before Christmas there seemed a lot on TV that made an impact on the Riley household. The legend that is Spit the Dog, who sadly no longer visits our TV screens enough, was on BBC 1’s Pointless. ‘Take That’ danced like The Drifters on Strictly but for me and millions of others Gary, Jason and Mark still shone. A one hour special on the late great Rik Mayall saw moving footage of him sharing his personal ‘mantra’ for life with students from Exeter University but the summit of the weekends viewing was the Fern Britton interview with the Rev Richard Coles. Richard who? The Reverend Coles is one of the former founding members of The Communards (you’ll remember Jimmy Somerville) who after a career of sex, drugs and debauchery gave it all up, went to church, liked it and now is a Parish Priest in middle class rural Northamptonshire. He’s Gay too. Richard said two things of immense clarity that brought together much of the mixed emotions I hold over church, faith and religion. The first was that the ‘blandness of religion’ kept him away from Church for so long. The ‘magnolia message’ we hear at Church when so many people, young and old, seek and desire colour from the world goes a long way to explain for me and for many others why we are not rushing though the local chapel doors on a Sunday morning. Lots of us believe. -

Popular Film/Popular Feminism: the Critical Reception of the Rape-Revenge Film Jacinda Read, Demontfort University, UK
Popular Film/Popular Feminism: The Critical Reception of the Rape-Revenge Film Jacinda Read, DeMontfort University, UK "The issues surrounding the film are feminist. But the film itself is not." Thus argued Callie Khouri, writer of Thelma and Louise (Francke, 1991: 17). Despite Khouri's claims, the critical reception of the film, nevertheless, centred quite explicitly on assessing the film's status as a feminist text, therefore suggesting that it is not, in fact, possible to separate the textual ("the film itself") from the extra-textual ("the issues surrounding the film"). Indeed, as Richard Dyer's work on film stars illustrates, extra-textual material such as star personas, reviews and publicity material play an important part in the construction of any particular text's meanings, particularly its dominant or preferred meanings (Dyer, 1979 and 1987). Traditionally, feminist analyses of mainstream texts have read "against the grain" of these dominant or preferred meanings in order to produce resistant feminist readings. Here, however, I want to read "with the grain" of these dominant meanings as they are inscribed in reviews of The Accused (Jonathan Kaplan, 1988) and Thelma and Louise (Ridley Scott, 1991) in order to explore the ways in which they might produce popular, common-sense understandings of feminism. There are several reasons for my choice of these particular films. Firstly, they deal with an issue (rape) which, perhaps more than any other, defined the discourses of early second-wave feminism. Secondly, given that I am concerned to explore the processes through which these discourses have been popularized, these films have been selected on the basis that they represent mainstream and well-known articulations of these discourses. -
