A one hour special on the late great Rik Mayall saw moving footage of him sharing his personal ‘mantra’ for life with students from Exeter University but the summit of the weekends viewing was the Fern Britton interview with the Rev Richard Coles. Richard who? The Reverend Coles is one of the former founding members of The Communards (you’ll remember Jimmy Somerville) who after a career of sex, drugs and debauchery gave it all up, went to church, liked it and now is a Parish Priest in middle class rural Northamptonshire. He’s Gay too. Richard said two things of immense clarity that brought together much of the mixed emotions I hold over church, faith and religion. The first was that the ‘blandness of religion’ kept him away from Church for so long. The ‘magnolia message’ we hear at Church when so many people, young and old, seek and desire colour from the world goes a long way to explain for me and for many others why we are not rushing though the local chapel doors on a Sunday morning. Noted for his diminutive size and amazing voice, Jimmy Somerville first shot to fame in the mid-1980s as the lead singer with the openly gay pop group of the time, Bronski Beat. Bronski Beat's first single, "Smalltown Boy," which, along with its video, dealt with the problems of being gay in provincial Britain, was an instant success (reaching number three in the UK pop charts) and quickly established the group's reputation. Born in Glasgow on June 22, 1961, Somerville was twenty-three when he formed Bronski Beat in 1984 as a collaboration with Steve Bronski and Larry Stenbachek. The three musicians met while they were working on a video by young gay men and lesbians entitled Famed Youth. It was during this project that Somerville realized that he could sing. Bronski Beat's debut album Age of Consent (1984) included a pink triangle on the cover and listed the age of consent for gay sex in European countries on the inside sleeve as a means of calling attention to the disparity between British and Continental laws at that time. Consisting of a series of songs dealing with various aspects of gay life, the album sold more than a million copies. In 1985 Bronski Beat teamed up with another gay singer, Marc Almond, to record a version of Donna Summer's "I Feel Love," which was also a hit.

The distinction religion/politics has become a defining feature of modern political liberalism. We examined how this distinction was mediated by the UK national press through a case study of its reporting of Pope Benedict XVI’s state visit to the UK in 2010. The case study evaluates the following four propositions: 1) “religion” is benign and relevant to “politics”; 2) “religion” is malign and relevant to “politics”; 3) “religion” is assumed to be irrelevant to “politics” but is dismissed positively; and 4) “religion” is regarded as irrelevant to “politics” but is dismissed negatively. We conclude there is a dominant shared assumption in the UK press supporting propositions two and three: that religion is a good thing when it conforms to a pre-existing narrative of political liberalism and a bad thing when it does not and that religion was judged in terms of its “political” values rather than in terms of its “religious” values.
