  • Commercializing Authentic Football
Course: SKOM12 Term: Spring 2021 Supervisor Henrik Merkelsen Examiner Howard Nothhaft CommercializingStaying Authentic Authentic in Football:a Commercial How IndustryDanish Football: ClubsA StayCase Authentic Study of thein a Danish Commercial Superliga Industry JENSJENS OLIVEROLIVER HANCKEHANCKE Lund University DepartmentDepartment ofof Strategicstrategic Communicationcommunication Master’s thesis Abstract Staying Authentic in a Commercial Industry: A Case Study of the Danish Superliga With commercial development of the football industry, it has become increasingly difficult to stay authentic as a club in the eyes of the supporters. However, the ac- tions of the clubs under the commercial pressure in an industry which builds upon authentic communities around the clubs leads to an alienation of the clubs as commercial brands in the eyes of the supporters. Previous research have failed to consider that the supporters’ perceived authenticity is a result of what moves and resonates with the supporters emotionally. By utilizing the concepts of actions by Jürgen Habermas and the concept of resonance by Hartmut Rosa, the study inves- tigated how authenticity is understood, negotiated, and established between Dan- ish football clubs and their supporters in an era of increased commercialization of football. The study is a case study which relies on qualitative research interviews with representatives and supporters of Danish football clubs. The results shows that if the clubs create initiatives and take decisions which resonates with what the supporters perceive as club values, then it resonates within the supporters making the initiative or decision perceived as authentic. The negotiation and establish- ment of authenticity happens when communicative action is utilized where club and supporters reach common ground as the supporters then acknowledge and recognize a certain action as aligned with the club values.

It is not a matter of simply pulling a switch that turns on the lights. Rather, it is a matter of deciding on the sequencing of removing barriers to economic activity. Acting too soon risks reigniting the outbreak.

  • Something's Rotten in the State of Denmark by Stuart Fuller Thirty
Something’s rotten in the state of Denmark by Stuart Fuller Thirty years after I left school, I can still remember my English Literature, and in particular the tale of Hamlet. Shakespeare’s play, based in Helsingor on the northern tip of Jutland in Denmark, is more of a series of one-liners to me now rather than a gripping storyline but in the last few weeks one particular line has summarised the state of the Danish national team. “Something’s rotten in the state of Denmark” I was first alerted to the story of the internal troubles by my good friend Ben, who has lived in Copenhagen for a decade and still plays at a fairly decent level. He sent me a message, which at first I assumed was a joke, saying that he could get a call up for the national side for their game against Slovakia. He was stretching the truth – I mean when would a 30-something, 10 years past his prime, holding midfielder get a shot at five minutes in the Danish Superliga, let alone an international cap. But there was some merit in his story. Due to an ongoing dispute between the International squad, who had only just returned from a fairly decent FIFA World Cup campaign in Russia, and the Danish Football Association, the DBU, over issues ranging from bonuses, expenses and who should be preparing their pre-match meatballs, the players and management had effectively gone on strike. Faced with the humiliation and potential harsh sanctions from the world governing bodies, the DBU were forced to spread their net far and wide to find a squad to head to Trnava.

  • Leagues Competitions Overview
Leagues’ Competitions Overview SEASON 2021/22 01 Leagues’ Competitions Overview SEASON 2021/22 FOREWORD League Football is back! In the middle of a summer rich of sport events with Euro 2020 finally cheered by the public in the stadiums and the Olympic Games successfully delivered in Tokyo, the football arenas are ready to welcome back fans and players for an exciting new season of domestic club football. We are glad to present to the whole football community this Leagues’ Competitions Overview, a document which contains - country by country- all key competition elements of our Member Leagues. During the past years, a few Leagues have presented innovations in their Competition Formats which we are happy to display in this report. Fans across Europe can now enjoy traditional league formats but also championships with new and creative competition systems with the introduction of play-off & play-out mechanisms which generate more compelling and interesting final parts of the season for their participating clubs, whether to win the title or to qualify for a European ticket but also to gain the permanence in the top division or its access. Other innovations are related to the introduction of new Kick-Off Times over the weekend to match the interests of a growing international audience and those of broadcasting and other commercial partners. And of course, the report provides insights on the Calendar and Players’ Transfer Windows for the approaching season for both all our summer and winter leagues. The Calendar for the upcoming 2020/21 season appears rich of games but also quite congested as we are approaching 2022 - the year with the FIFA World Cup in November/December – with its unusual and highly debated schedule which will impact domestic league football calendars for more than a season.
