Acta Biologica Sibirica 6: 229–247. https://doi.org/10.3897/abs.6.e54139 Abstract An annotated list of Orthopteroidea of rise paddy fields in Kyzylorda oblast in South Kazakhstan is given. A total of 60 species of orthopteroid insects were identified, belonging to 58 genera from 17 families and 5 orders. Mantids are represented by 3 families, 6 genera and 6 species; cockroaches – by 2 families, 2 genera and 2 species; earwigs – by 3 families, 3 genera and 3 species; sticks insects – by 1 family, 1 genus and 1 species. Orthopterans are most numerous (8 families, 46 genera and 48 species). Of these, three species, Bolivaria brachyptera, Hierodula tenuidentata and Ceraeocercus fuscipennis, are listed in the Red Book of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Celes variabilis and Chrysochraon dispar indicated for the first time for a given location. The fauna of orthopteroid insects in the studied areas of Kyzylorda is compared with other regions of Kazakhstan. -

SANNOMIYA Institute of Biology, Oita University, Oita, Jo pan Received29.v.73 SUMMARY In Gonista bicolor (2n =22+XX+O2B1+0'7B2,2n =22+XO+O—3B1+0—'16B,) frequenciesof males with B1's in four natural populations were 29, 35, 14 and 72 per Cent, respectively, and those with B,'s were 97, 95, 76 and 92 per Cent, respectively. B1's were mitotically highly stable in the germ line of the males as well as in the somatic lines of both sexes. The mean numbers of B1's per male were 034, 050, 0l4 and l00, respectively, in the four populations. B,'s were mitotically unstable in somatic lines of both sexes. In the germ line of the males the instability of B,'s was a characteristic confined to an early stage of development. Therefore, numbers of B,'s in primary spermato- cytes were variable from follicle to follicle within the individuals, though they were usually constant within the follicles. Mean numbers of B,'s per follicle were also different among the four populations, i.e. 296, 177, 137, and 297, respectively. Different tissues showed different mean numbers of B2's per cell; higher numbers in the ovariole walls than in the gastirc caeca (females), and higher numbers in the germ line than in the gastric caeca (males). An estimation of original zygotic numbers of the males indicated that different mean numbers of B5's between somatic and germ lines and between different somatic lines were accounted for on the basis of tendency to elimination of B2's in the somatic lines. -

HEWITt School of Biological Sciences, University of East Anglia, Norwich NR4 7TJ Received2.vi.75 SUMMARY Podisma pedestris exists as both an XO and neoXY form in the Southern French Alps. These chromosome types are shown to be contiguously allopatric and hybrid populations have been located in several places.Hybridisation appears to be occurring freely, but the hybrid zones are quite narrow. In several places the two distributions are separated by geographic barriers such as high mountain ridges and lowlands. The history of this XY chromosomal race is discussed in the light of the genetic dynamics of hybrid zones and the biogeography of this situation. Its origin is probably post-glacial, and it may be extending its range as a salient in one region. A comparison of the proper- ties of similar cases indicates that the formation of such chromosomal races may be a frequent event in relatively immobile species that are subjected to isolation and expansion by major climatic and ecological changes. 1. INTRODUCTION ANY species shown to contain distinct chromosomal "races" with allopatric or parapatric distributions arouses considerable interest. Such polytypic situations are in contrast to polymorphisms, where the different homozygotes and heterozygotes exist sympatrically, and their study should throw light on the causal distinctions between the two types of intra-specific variation. These situations are also suggestive of incipient speciation, with properties such as lower hybrid fitness and reduced gene flow. Consequently the comparison of their detailed ecological cytogenetics and that of apparently recent sibling species may also clarify the role that chromosomes play in speciation. -

Department of Zoology, Hazara During inspection 1402 species of grasshoppers and Locusts were collected from different localities in University, Mansehra, Pakistan Hazara region. Collected specimens of Acrididae family were identified and sorted out into 73 species pertaining to 11 sub-families and 38 genera, has been enlisted to othopterean fauna of this region. Beside this it was noted that the members of subfamily family Acridinae was found to be most abundant with 20.82%, followed by Oedipodinae, Gomphocerinae and Oxyinae with 17.61%, 17.47% and 14.40% respectively. We examined the phylogenetic relationships of the New Zealand species and a subset of Australian Fossil calibration alpine grasshoppers using DNA sequences from the entire mitochondrial genome, nuclear 45S rRNA and Histone Grasshopper H3 and H4 loci. Within our sampling, the New Zealand alpine taxa are monophyletic and sister to a pair of alpine New Zealand Tasmanian grasshoppers. We used six Orthopteran fossils to calibrate a molecular clock analysis to infer that the most recent common ancestor of New Zealand and Tasmanian grasshoppers existed about 20 million years ago, before alpine habitat was available in New Zealand. We inferred a radiation of New Zealand grasshoppers ~13–15 Mya, suggesting alpine species diversification occurred in New Zealand well before the Southern Alps were formed by the mountain building events of the Kaikoura Orogeny 2–5 Mya. This would suggest that either the ancestors of today’s New Zealand grasshoppers were not dependent on living in the alpine zone, or they diversified outside of New Zealand. 1. The following is an account of the short-horned grasshoppers and their relatives, collected members of the Danish Dan" Expedition (see Petersen, 1966). The number of spe cies obtained is not great, but some very valuable series were brought back, together with lesser material of little-known, or previously unknown forms. Opportunity is also taken here to record certain miscellaneous specimens of interesting species from the area vis.ited by the expedition, but which were not in cluded in its collections. Originally it was intended only to include specimens in the writer's own instituton among such additional records, but, certain other relevant material from other sources being currently at hand, it was considered that it might be of interest to refer to this also. No attempt has been made, however, to extend the scope of the information presented by thoroughly investigating these other sources for additional material. Its elevation is 2,800 meters. A total of 633 specimens were collected during the study period. A 22 species of grasshopper were identified under nineteen genera of three families. Members of family Acrididae (17) under 8 subfamilies were found the most abundant. Whereas, Tettigoniidae (3) has two subfamilies and Pyrgomorphidae (2) has only one subfamily. Statistical analysis indicated percentage of different species of family Acrididae is 84.2% while Tettigoniidae is 9.8% and Pyrgomorphidae is 6%. The most dominant species recorded was Diabolocatantops pinguis (11%) whereas, Euconocephalus incertus (0.6%), indicated the lowest range.
