Feldheuschrecken, Knarrschrecken (Catantopidae) und Dornschrecken (Tetrigidae) werden zur Unt erordnung Caelifera (Kurzfühlerschrek- ke n ) gerechnet. Einige Gattungen der Grashüpfer wie Stenobothrus, Chorthippus und Omocestus sind im Gelände nur schwer vo neina nd er zu unterschei - den. Vielfach ist ein Geschlechtsdimorphismus ausgebildet, der die Verwechslung mit einer anderen Art möglich macht. So ist das Weibchen vo n Omocestus haemorrhoidalis mit Myrmeleotettix maculatus, der Gefleckten Keulenschrecke , das Männchen mit dem vo n Stenobothrus stigmaticus, dem Kleinen Heidegrashüpfer , zu verwechseln. Omocestus haemorrhoidalis ist eher unauffällig. Möglicherweise wurde sie im Saarland bislang übersehen, denn nur am Gesang läßt sich die Ar t im Gelände zuverlässig von a nd eren in Frage kommen - den Heuschrecken unterscheiden. 90 Der Gesang von Omocestus haemorrhoidalis ist sehr leise und hört sich mechanisch, hämmernd monoton an und erinnert entfernt an den Gesang des Feldschwirls . -

Insect Survey of Four Longleaf Pine Preserves
A SURVEY OF THE MOTHS, BUTTERFLIES, AND GRASSHOPPERS OF FOUR NATURE CONSERVANCY PRESERVES IN SOUTHEASTERN NORTH CAROLINA Stephen P. Hall and Dale F. Schweitzer November 15, 1993 ABSTRACT Moths, butterflies, and grasshoppers were surveyed within four longleaf pine preserves owned by the North Carolina Nature Conservancy during the growing season of 1991 and 1992. Over 7,000 specimens (either collected or seen in the field) were identified, representing 512 different species and 28 families. Forty-one of these we consider to be distinctive of the two fire- maintained communities principally under investigation, the longleaf pine savannas and flatwoods. An additional 14 species we consider distinctive of the pocosins that occur in close association with the savannas and flatwoods. Twenty nine species appear to be rare enough to be included on the list of elements monitored by the North Carolina Natural Heritage Program (eight others in this category have been reported from one of these sites, the Green Swamp, but were not observed in this study). Two of the moths collected, Spartiniphaga carterae and Agrotis buchholzi, are currently candidates for federal listing as Threatened or Endangered species. Another species, Hemipachnobia s. subporphyrea, appears to be endemic to North Carolina and should also be considered for federal candidate status. With few exceptions, even the species that seem to be most closely associated with savannas and flatwoods show few direct defenses against fire, the primary force responsible for maintaining these communities. Instead, the majority of these insects probably survive within this region due to their ability to rapidly re-colonize recently burned areas from small, well-dispersed refugia. -

A total of 60 species of orthopteroid insects were identified, belonging to 58 genera from 17 families and 5 orders. Mantids are represented by 3 families, 6 genera and 6 species; cockroaches – by 2 families, 2 genera and 2 species; earwigs – by 3 families, 3 genera and 3 species; sticks insects – by 1 family, 1 genus and 1 species. Orthopterans are most numerous (8 families, 46 genera and 48 species). Of these, three species, Bolivaria brachyptera, Hierodula tenuidentata and Ceraeocercus fuscipennis, are listed in the Red Book of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Celes variabilis and Chrysochraon dispar indicated for the first time for a given location. The fauna of orthopteroid insects in the studied areas of Kyzylorda is compared with other regions of Kazakhstan. -

Box 250 Pierre, SD 57501-0250 611416 West Hidalgo Tolleson, AZ 85353 1 Abstract Strategies that utilize lower than traditional doses of insecticides in combination with swaths of applied insecticide that leave untreated areas between each swath are one way to significantly reduce the cost of controlling grasshoppers on rangeland. By leaving untreated areas, this strategy provides reserves for naturally occurring biological control agents and facilitates an economical integrated management approach for dealing with damaging populations of grasshoppers on rangeland. This three year study was conducted in different locations and years to develop and demonstrate on a large scale operational level, the utility of reduced area / agent treatments (RAATs) for significantly reducing costs to manage damaging populations of grasshoppers. In 1997 these reduced agent/area treatments (RAATs) resulted in about 15% lower mortality than traditional treatments while reducing pesticide use and cost by 60% with malathion and 75% with carbaryl. -

Trisaia, Rotondella, Italy 2Department of Animal, Vegetal and Environmental Science - University of Molise, Campobasso, Italy 3Department of Agricultural and Environmental Biology and Chemistry - University of Bari, Italy Abstract In its gregarious phase the locust Dociostaurus maroccanus (Thunberg) (Orthoptera Acrididae) has periodically caused significant yield losses in many Mediterranean and Asian countries, and alarm in the general public. Population outbreaks in recent years have frequently required the application of control measures, based on those that have low environmental impact, which are only possible with a sound knowledge of locust bio-ethology and ecology. Our research was aimed at studying the spatial distribution of D. maroccanus egg pods in two Apulian egg bed areas in southern Italy, thus contributing to the rationalization of control methods. The distribution of D. maroccanus egg pods was investigated using a geostatistical approach. Three sampling designs (called A, B and C), characterized by different mesh and clod sizes, were compared to evaluate their effectiveness and afforda- bility. In both egg bed areas, the variogram models were asymptotic with a small nugget effect, and indicated an aggregated dis- tribution of egg pods. Contour maps showed that design A, based on a larger mesh and clod size, was characterized by few hot spots and an extended zone of “low density” egg pods, while design B, involving a smaller mesh and clod size, showed a more structured distribution, with various hot spots alternating with zero level zones. -

Sanchiz (*) RESUMEN Durante el periodo 1978-1994 se han descrito cerca de 2.000 especies animales nue- vas para la ciencia en territorio ibérico-balear. Se presenta como apéndice un listado completo de las especies (1978-1993), ordenadas taxonómicamente, así como de sus referencias bibliográficas. Como tendencias generales en este proceso de inventario de la biodiversidad se aprecia un incremento moderado y sostenido en el número de taxones descritos, junto a una cada vez mayor contribución de los autores españoles. Es cada vez mayor el número de especies publicadas en revistas que aparecen en el Science Citation Index, así como el uso del idioma inglés. La mayoría de los phyla, clases u órdenes mues- tran gran variación en la cantidad de especies descritas cada año, dado el pequeño núme- ro absoluto de publicaciones. Los insectos son claramente el colectivo más estudiado, pero se aprecia una disminución en su importancia relativa, asociada al incremento de estudios en grupos poco conocidos como los nematodos. Accepted 16 December, 2011 Acridoidea is a superfamily within the Orthoptera order that comprises a group of short-horned insects commonly called grasshoppers. Grasshopper and locust species are major pests of grasslands and crops in all continents except Antarctica. Economically and historically, locusts and grasshoppers are two of the most destructive agricultural pests. The most important locust species belong to the genus Schistocerca and populate America, Africa, and Asia. Some grasshoppers considered to be important pests are the Melanoplus species, Camnula pellucida in North America, Brachystola magna and Sphenarium purpurascens in northern and central Mexico, and Oedaleus senegalensis and Zonocerus variegatus in Africa. Previous studies have classified these species based on specific characteristics. This review includes six headings. The first discusses the main species of grasshoppers and locusts; the second focuses on their worldwide distribution; the third describes their biology and life cycle; the fourth refers to climatic factors that facilitate the development of grasshoppers and locusts; the fifth discusses the action or reaction of grasshoppers and locusts to external or internal stimuli and the sixth refers to elements to design management strategies with emphasis on prevention. -
