Several months later on January 31, 1958, the U.S.Army launched Explorer I. InOctober of 1958, the U.S. formally organized its space program by creating the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). NASA’s goal is “peaceful explo- ration of space for the benefit of all humankind.”NASA space programs have included the Mercury, Gemini,Apollo, Skylab, Space Shuttle, Mars and International Space Station. 1 ROCKETROCKET LABLABTM O G n e R John Glenn C A l John Glenn is an engineer, fighter pilot and a decorated World War II and a s D s Korean War hero. After the Korean War, he became a test pilot and the project L E officer on many aircraft. In 1959, he was selected as one of the first seven astro- e s s S nauts for the Mercury Project. He was a business executive from 1965 to 1974 o n 3 and was a U.S. Senator from 1974 to 1999. He accomplished these Space Firsts: P l - a 5 1. One of the first seven astronauts. n 2. John Glenn was the first man to orbit the earth. On February 20, 1962, he piloted the Mercury-Atlas 6 Friendship 7 rocket. He orbited the earth three K times and reached an altitude of 162 miles. E altitude 3. He is the oldest man to travel in space (77 years old). It Y astronaut was a nine day mission on the Space Shuttle Discovery W from October 29 - November 7, 1998.This research John Glenn O flight conducted NASA studies on spaceflight and the NASA R aging process. orbit D physics S Sally Ride pioneers Sally Ride is from Los Angeles, CA. She earned bachelors and robotic arm masters degrees and a Ph.D. in physics. She joined NASA in Sally Ride 1978. During her astronaut training she was the Capsule satellite Communicator and helped develop the Space Shuttle’s robotic Space Race arm. In 1987, Dr. Ride left NASA to work at Stanford University transportation and in 1989 she became a professor of physics at the University of California, San Diego and Director of the California Space Institute. She is cur- rently on a leave from the university and is the President and CEO of Sally Ride Science, a company that has hands-on science programs for upper elementary and middle school girls to motivate them to have science careers. Dr. Ride’s Space Firsts are: 1. A member of the first astronaut class to have women. (July,1978) 2. First American woman in Space.This was the Space Shuttle Challenger flight from June 18 - June 24, 1983. 3. First woman to complete two space flights. Her second Space Shuttle was again on Challenger. It launched in October, 1984. Note: For older or advanced students, add two more astronauts. Explain how The Space Race began and that there were many firsts L E e during this time. Discuss the Space Firsts of John Glenn and Sally Ride s s S and why they are important to today’s transportation. o n 3 3. Show students pictures of both people. Pictures are available from their P l - websites or from NASA’s website (www.nasa.gov). Search for Astronaut a 5 Biographies. n S T E P BUILD (15 minutes) 2.Activity 1. Explain since the Space Firsts of John Glenn and Sally Ride were accomplished with and on NASA rocket flights, students will make and launch their own miniature version of a NASA rocket - a model rocket. 2. Build the Firestreak SST™ together with students, using step-by-step procedures.This is a snap together rocket that needs no gluing or cutting. S T E P 3. LAUNCH (30 minutes) Activity 1. Assign and post launch jobs for students. Launch jobs are in the Estes Educator Guide for Teachers & Youth Group Leaders. 2. Prepare rockets for launching in your classroom before going outside to launch. Follow the Engine Preparation steps located in the Firestreak SST™ Instructions. 3. Launch rockets outside at a soccer field, football field, baseball field, green grass area or blacktop area. Wrap Up - Touch Down & Recovery 1. Students can write and perform a skit about what they learned about a space pioneer, do a radio broadcast describing the pioneer or compose a rap song about the pioneer. Evaluation/Assessment • Students’ participation in the class discussion on Space Pioneers. • Students will complete the webbing activity on transportation. • Students will assemble and launch the Firestreak SST™ model rocket. When she was zipped up, she found herself in total darkness. She didn’t know when she’d be let out. Christa wore electrodes and transmitters to see how she would react to being closed in, since on the space shuttle she’d have to share a living space that measured only 10 by 13 feet (the size of her kitchen) with six people, and she and the other astronauts would eat, sleep, go to the bathroom, work, and relax there; it was no place for someone with claustrophobia. Christa thought she would start yelling and try to claw her way out, but she lay back, folded her arms across her stomach, and imagined herself floating in space. As Christa McAuliffe a result, the 15 minutes she spent inside the nylon ball were very peaceful. At the end of the exercise, she asked if she could take the ball home. “When things start to get crazy, I can just set the timer and tell the kids, ‘O.K., Mom’s going into the sphere now.’” Christa, a high-school social studies teacher from New Hampshire, first heard about the teacher astronaut program on the radio while driving with her husband, Steve. The smile that lit Christa’s face told Steve she was interested. “Go for it,” he said. When she put off filling out the Women astronauts stand with the Personal Rescue Enclosure (the rescue ball).

Though more than a score of years after the loss of Challenger’s crew, STS-118 was a reminder of the morning of January 28, 1986. That week Christa McAuliffe planned to perform both live and filmed science lessons. These lost lessons, prepared for the nation and world’s school children, were never done. This project delves into those undone educational activities. In the 1950s and 1960s, opportunities for American women and minorities were limited as they were often segregated into pink Opportunities; collar and menial jobs. NASA’s female and minority employees faced NASA Impacts similar obstacles. President Reagan January 28, 1986 It was the 25th time a U.S. Space Transportation System would take off from Cape Canaveral. This was no ordinary flight, however. Christa McAuliffe was America’s first teacher to fly in space. With her training complete, and school children anticipating her trip, there was a sense of excitement throughout the country on the evening of January 27, 1986. People were so used to the flights, most folks no longer watched shuttle liftoffs. This flight was different, though. Everyone - including school children - would be watching because Christa McAuliffe was going into space. But the shuttle’s launch mechanism had a fatal design flaw. As a result, Challenger and her seven-member crew - including America’s first teacher in space - were blown out of the sky seventy-three seconds after launch on January 28, 1986. Smith Resources, Science, and Industry Division Summary On August 9, 2005, the space shuttle Discovery successfully completed the first of two “Return to Flight” (RTF) missions — STS-114. It was the first shuttle launch since the February 1, 2003, Columbia tragedy. NASA announced on July 27, 2005, the day after STS-114’s launch, that a second RTF mission has been indefinitely postponed because of a problem that occurred during Discovery’s launch that is similar to what led to the loss of Columbia. Two shuttle-related facilities in Mississippi and Louisiana were damaged by Hurricane Katrina, which may further delay the next shuttle launch. It currently is expected some time in 2006. This report discusses the Columbia tragedy, the Discovery mission, and issues for Congress regarding the future of the shuttle. The Loss of the Space Shuttle Columbia The space shuttle Columbia was launched on its STS-107 mission on January 16, 2003. After completing a 16-day scientific research mission, Columbia started its descent to Earth on the morning of February 1, 2003. As it descended from orbit, approximately 16 minutes before its scheduled landing at Kennedy Space Center, FL, Columbia broke apart over northeastern Texas.     In 1985 I was selected from over 11,000 applicants to be the first teacher in space. Like outer space. In a rocket ship called Challenger. And was I up for it? You betcha! As a little girl I watched the Space Age being born. The day after John Glenn orbited the Earth in Friendship 7, I told a friend of mine at Marian High school in Framingham Massachusetts (that’s where I grew up, Framingham), I told my friend that day, ‘Do you realize that someday people will be going to the Moon? Maybe even take a bus?’ I told her, ‘I want to do that!’ And here I was. It was 1984 when President Reagan announced the Teacher in Space Project. NASA was planning to launch the first civilian ever into space, and they were looking specifically for an educator. An ordinary person, and a ‘gifted teacher’, who could communicate with students while in orbit. Now, I can’t speak for the gifted part, but you can’t get more ordinary than a New England girl from suburban Boston teaching high school Social Studies in Concord, New Hampshire. Teaching was my calling, and I loved my students. We took a lot of field trips, and I liked to bring in local guest speakers to emphasize the impact of ordinary people on history. I wanted my students to know that they were as important to the historical record as kings, politicians, or generals. That the experiences of regular people were the real historical barometer; they were the real heroes who shaped the world we lived in.

This was the first video that we all saw of the Challenger as it exploded. This source was very important and crucial to the creation of our documentary. It was one of the interviews that we had in the documentary. We were able to learn vital and very interesting information from Mr. Forrester. The information that was given to us not only furthered our knowledge, but also improved the documentary as a whole. This was a primary source because we were able to get information directly from a source that both witnessed the Challenger disaster, and was also highly involved with the program. Of note, the Spaceport News header, went through some 10 different logo schemes, from 1963 through 1995. The longest running logo is below, which ran from the first issue, on December 13, 1962, until June 12, 1975. From The January 7, 1983, Spaceport News The following photo is on the first page. The caption reads “TECHNICIANS TRANSFER the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite and its Inertial Upper Stage, the primary cargo for STS-6, into the transport canister. The canister and cargo were moved to Launch Pad 39A Dec. 27. There the cargo has been undergoing checkout in the Payload Changeout Room. I believe the photo is taken in the Vertical Processing Facility and it was the first vertical payload processed for Shuttle there. Page 1 This article is on page 2, “Astronaut Physicians Added to Flight Crews”. In part, the article reads “Dr. Norman Thagard and Dr. William Thornton have been named as the fifth crew members scheduled to be aboard Space Shuttle missions STS-7 and STS-8, respectively. Orloff, 01/2001/Page 1 STS-51L INSIGNIA S85-46260 – The STS-51L crewmembers designed this insignia which will represent their participation in NASA's mission aboard the Challenger, depicted launching from Florida and soaring into space to carry out a variety of goals. Among the prescribed duties of the five astronauts and two payload specialists will be observation and photography of Halley's Comet, backdropped against the U.S. flag in the insignia. Surnames of the crewmembers encircle the scene, with the payload specialists being recognized below. Surname of the first teacher in space, Sharon Christa McAuliffe, is followed by a symbolic apple. The NASA insignia design for space shuttle flights is reserved for use by the astronauts and for other official use as the NASA Administrator may authorize. Public availability has been approved only in the form of illustrations by the various news media.
