We have audited the accompanying financial statements of Safe Horizon, Inc. (“Safe Horizon”), which comprise the statements of financial position as of June 30, 2019 and 2018, and the related statements of activities, functional expenses and cash flows for the years then ended, and the related notes to the financial statements. Management’s Responsibility for the Financial Statements Management is responsible for the preparation and fair presentation of these financial statements in accordance with accounting principles generally accepted in the United States of America; this includes the design, implementation, and maintenance of internal control relevant to the preparation and fair presentation of financial statements that are free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error. Auditors’ Responsibility Our responsibility is to express an opinion on these financial statements based on our audits. We conducted our audits in accordance with auditing standards generally accepted in the United States of America. Those standards require that we plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the financial statements are free from material misstatement. An audit involves performing procedures to obtain audit evidence about the amounts and disclosures in the financial statements. The procedures selected depend on the auditors’ judgment, including the assessment of the risks of material misstatement of the financial statements, whether due to fraud or error. In making those risk assessments, the auditors consider internal control relevant to the entity’s preparation and fair presentation of the financial statements in order to design audit procedures that are appropriate in the circumstances, but not for the purpose of expressing an opinion on the effectiveness of the entity’s internal control. Accordingly, we express no such opinion. An audit also includes evaluating the appropriateness of accounting policies used and the reasonableness of significant accounting estimates made by management, as well as evaluating the overall presentation of the financial statements. We believe that the audit evidence we have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our audit opinion. Opinion In our opinion, the financial statements referred to above present fairly, in all material respects, the financial position of Safe Horizon as of June 30, 2019 and 2018, and the changes in its net assets and its cash flows for the years then ended in accordance with accounting principles generally accepted in the United States of America.     Overview of Achievements, 2018-2019 During the period of April 1, 2018 to March 31, 2019, the Safe Horizon Domestic Violence Law Pro- ject (DVLP) and the Immigration Law Project (ILP) provided high quality, comprehensive legal infor- mation, brief services, and representation on approximately 1823 cases throughout New York City. DVLP and ILP provide services in the areas of family law, matrimonial law, VAWA petitions, U- Visas, adjustment proceedings asylum, conditional residency, family petitions, green card renew- als, naturalization, and removal proceedings. Specifically, DVLP obtained legal benefits on 1463 family and matrimonial cases. ILP achieved le- gal benefits on 360 immigration cases. DVLP/ILP also provided trainings to communities through- out New York City on the basics of family law, housing law, immigration rights, and public assis- tance. Together, DVLP/ILP’s legal services benefitted 2374 people. IOLA funding allowed the DVLP/ILP to provide victims of violence holistic services by ensuring le- gal services on-site at Safe Horizon’s numerous programs including our Community Programs, Do- mestic Violence Shelters, and Court Programs. Safe Horizon is the nation’s largest victim service provider. The continuum of services received by victims helps make certain that their safety needs will be met. By providing on-site legal services at Safe Horizon’s various programs the DVLP/ILP ensures that victims are aware of their legal rights and remedies. Victims are then able to access the justice system in an informed manner. IOLA funding allows the DVLP/ILP to provide training to case managers and social workers throughout the city that work with victims of violence.

    Asian American Mental Health: A Post-September 11th Needs Assessment Asian American Federation of New York September 2003 Copyright © 2003 by Asian American Federation of New York Support for this publication was provided by two grants from The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation in Princeton, New Jersey Asian American Mental Health: A Post-September 11th Needs Assessment Foreword The second anniversary of September 11th finds New York City further along in its recovery from the events of that date, poised in a stage of both memory and renewal. The last two years have given our city, our nation and the world an opportunity to absorb and reflect upon the tragedy’s myriad meanings and its societal and global consequences. Cadences of renewal resonate externally, with the progression of plans for rebuilding the World Trade Center site, efforts by various constituencies to revitalize the crippled regional economy, and restoration of other physical resources lost in the disaster’s wake. However, for individuals directly affected by the loss of a loved one or other emotionally traumatic experiences connected to September 11th, the personal recovery process can be obscured from the outside. The painful processes of grieving over a loss and rebuilding or moving on with a life that was instantly and deeply transformed can be an isolated experience – one that is not easily comprehended by or shared with others. For Asian Americans, this is especially true. As described in this report, in times of distress, Asian cultural values of self-reliance, reservation and non-expression typically prompt individuals to avoid seeking assistance in dealing with emotional issues.
