    Ana Došen Probing the Manga ToPoEt(h)ics in Tezuka’s Message to Adolf Keywords: manga, spatial turn, topography, poetics, ethics Manga and Spatial Turn The postmodern era has seen both global fragmentation and unification occurring simultaneously, resulting in multiple notions of space and theo- retical frameworks. Through not only cultural and critical geography, but also literary geography and cartography, a new understanding of spatiality has emerged. With the so-called spatial turn, established theoretical per- spectives concerning the time-space continuum are being re-evaluated, and the complex issue of topography is regaining relevance. The repre- sentation of space in literary works brings into focus multiple opportuni- ties to develop new, decolonizing and non-normative spatial imageries. Instead of the previously dominating historicism, the spatial turn as an interdisciplinary perspective allows one to deconstruct and reconstruct categories of space and place while overcoming previously established spatial dichotomies such as East/West, far/near, periphery/center. The observations of prominent thinkers such as Michel Foucault (1997) con- tributed to an understanding of space as something other than a fixed category. Conceptual “de-territorialization” and “re-territorialization” has affected issues of identity and borders, including the epistemological basis of area studies. Engagement in area studies, as a form of spatial scholarship, has traditionally been focused on national, regional and local characteristics, but it has also become apparent that it involves complex transrelational aspects: between the space of the subject matter and the place of its criti- cal exploration. Globalized political, cultural and economic entangle- ments are also reflected in area studies, as boundaries that once seemed separate and solid can now be traversed.

    1 BAB I PENDAHULUAN 1.1 Latar Belakang Masalah Budaya populer yang berasal dari Jepang merupakan salah satu bentuk budaya asing yang masuk dan diterima oleh masyarakat Indonesia. Bentuk media visual tersebut beragam dari anime (animasi Jepang), tokusatsu, film Jepang, dorama (sinema elektronik Jepang), JAV (Japanese Adult Video), permainan video (yang mayoritas berasal dari Jepang), dan lain-lain. Budaya populer yang berasal dari Jepang tersebut merupakan budaya yang diproduksi dan dikonsumsi secara luas terutama untuk kalangan generasi muda dengan segmentasi usia di bawah 30 tahun. Budaya populer tersebut berkembang dan menjadi pengaruh budaya di dunia dan berkontribusi terhadap perekonomian Jepang1. Berkembangnya budaya populer Jepang secara lebih luas di Indonesia tidak lepas dari peranan masuknya serial animasi (anime) dan komik (manga) Doraemon pada awal 1990-an2. Sebelum Doraemon, masyarakat Indonesia menikmati berbagai anime dan tokusatsu melalui rental video Betamax yang populer di era 1980-an. Penayangan Doraemon di salah satu televisi swasta tersebut pada hari Minggu pagi pukul 08:00 WIB3 mendorong masuknya berbagai produk (franchise) budaya populer lainnya (seperti Candy Candy, Sailor Moon, dan Dragon Ball Z) di Indonesia. Salah satu budaya populer Jepang yang masuk ke Indonesia tersebut adalah tokusatsu yang terdiri dari berbagai genre dan dirilis dalam bentuk serial atau film. 1 Budaya populer di Jepang telah menjadi industri besar yang mendukung perekonomian Jepang. Atkins Asian Languages and Literature This study is an attempt to elucidate the complex interrelationship between gender, sexuality, desire, and power by examining how premodern Japanese texts represent the gender-based ideals of women and men at the peak and margins of the social hierarchy. To do so, it will survey a wide range of premodern texts and contrast the literary depictions of two female groups (imperial priestesses and courtesans), two male groups (elite warriors and outlaws), and two groups of Buddhist priests (elite and “corrupt” monks). In my view, each of the pairs signifies hyperfemininities, hypermasculinities, and hypersexualities of elite and outcast classes, respectively. The ultimate goal of 4 this study is to contribute to the current body of research in classical Japanese literature by offering new readings of some of the well-known texts featuring the above-mentioned six groups. My interpretations of the previously studied texts will be based on an argument that, in a cultural/literary context wherein defiance merges with sexual attractiveness and/or sexual freedom, one’s outcast status transforms into a source of significant power.

Among these, Mononokehime ( Princess Mononoke , 1997) and the period leading up to it from the early 1990s, as I argue in this chapter, had a great impact on the rest of Miyazaki’s career. In the fi rst section of this chapter, I discuss how Miyazaki grew sceptical about the style of his fi lmmaking as a result of cataclysmic changes in the political and social situation both in and outside Japan; in essence, he questioned his production of entertainment fi lms featuring adventures with (pseudo- )European settings, and began to look for something more ‘substantial’. Th e result was a grave and complex story about civilization set in medieval Japan, which was based on aca- demic discourses on Japanese history, culture and identity.
