Le 17 novembre, avait lieu une table-ronde autour du livre de *Marie-Françoise Baslez, Les premiers bâtisseurs de l’Eglise. Correspondances épiscopales, Ier-IIIe siècles (Fayard, 2016). Présidée par Béatrice Caseau (Paris-Sorbonne), cette séance a associé Claire Sotinel (UPEC) et Michel-Yves Perrin (EPHE). Le 5 janvier 2017, une séance portait sur les Premiers écrits chrétiens parus quelques mois auparavant aux éditions Gallimard, dans la collection de la Pléiade, sous la direction de Bernard Pouderon, *Jean-Marie Salamito et *Vincent Zarini. Présidée par Martin Dumont, secrétaire général de l’IRER, et en présence des trois directeurs du volume, cette séance associait le père Michel Fédou (Centre Sèvres – facultés jésuites de Paris) et Mme Marie Achet-Haushalter, doctorante de *Jean-Marie Salamito et chargée d’enseignement à Paris- Sorbonne. Le 21 février, en commun avec la Société des études juives, une table-ronde a eu lieu, portant sur Les intellectuels juifs et les questions politiques dans l’entre-deux-guerres et dans l’immédiat après-guerre. Présidée par *Mireille Hadas-Lebel et animée par Catherine Nicault (université de Reims), cette séance a associé Paola Ferruta (Centre Roland Mousnier), et *Dominique Bourel (Centre Roland Mousnier) et Edward Kaplan (univ. Brandeis). Les débats ont porté sur les travaux de *Dominique Bourel (Martin Buber, sentinelle de l'humanité, Paris, Albin Michel, 2016) et d’Edward Kaplan (Abraham Joshua Heschel. Une biographie, Paris, Honoré Champion, 2016). Le 9 mai, également avec la Société des études juives, la séance était consacrée à La conversion du judaïsme au christianisme, autour des livres d’Elsa Marmursztejn, Le baptême forcé des enfants juifs, Question scolastique, enjeu politique, échos contemporains (Les Belles Lettres, 2016), de *Marina Caffiero, Baptêmes forcés. Histoires de juifs, chrétiens et convertis dans la Rome des papes (Honoré Champion, 2017) et d’Olivier Rota et Danielle Delmaire (dir.), La mission catholique auprès des Juifs. Emergence, renouvellement et critiques du XIXe siècle à nos jours (Parole et silence, 2016). Présidée par *Mireille Hadas- Lebel, et modérée par *Daniel Tollet, la séance a associé *Marina Caffiero (Rome, La Sapienza), Danielle Delmaire (univ. Lille III) et Elsa Marmursztejn (univ. Reims). 4 Enfin, le 18 mai, en présence de l’auteur, une table-ronde portait sur le livre de Matthieu Arnold, Luther (Fayard, mars 2017). Présidée par Tatiana Baranova-Debaggi (Paris- Sorbonne), elle associait le président Hubert Bost (EPHE) et Marianne Carbonnier-Burkard (Institut protestant de théologie). ( A noter Le cycle d’activités de l’IRER pour l’année 2017-2018 débutera le 10 octobre 2017 par une table-ronde qui portera sur les tentatives entreprises en 1917 par le Saint-Siège pour obtenir la fin des hostilités. Elle associera Xavier Boniface (univ. Picardie) et Jean-Marc Ticchi (CéSor, EHESS). It does not treat Sacred Scripture as texts to be studied, but as God’s living word. Lectio, Meditatio, Oratio, Contemplatio Traditionally, Lectio Divina has four separate steps: a reading of a passage from Sacred Scripture, a reflection on its meaning, followed by prayer and contemplation on the Word of God. Historically, Lectio Divina has been a “community practice”, that is, performed by monks and nuns in monasteries but this practice can be used by an individual and any group, the family in particular. Lectio Divina has been likened to a meal. First, one takes a bite of the food (lectio). The food is then chewed (meditatio), its taste savored (oratio) and finally “digested” and made part of the body (contemplatio). The ultimate purpose of this form of meditative prayer is to lead one to a deeper knowledge of Jesus Christ, the Living Word of God, The Bread of Life. Preparation: Stillness It is very important that an atmosphere of calm and tranquility of mind and body be established before one begins the four traditional steps.

    Spiritual Communion St. Thomas Aquinas defined Spiritual Communion as “an ardent desire to receive Jesus in the Holy Sacrament and a loving embrace as though we had already received Him.” The basis of this practice was explained by Pope St. John Paul II in his encyclical, Ecclesia de Eucharistia: ‘In the Eucharist, "unlike any other sacrament, the mystery [of Holy Communion] is so perfect that it brings us to the heights of every good thing: Here is the ultimate goal of every human desire, because here we attain God and God joins himself to us in the most perfect union." ‘Precisely for this reason it is good to cultivate in our hearts a constant desire for the sacrament of the Eucharist. This was the origin of the practice of "spiritual communion," which has happily been established in the Church for centuries and recommended by saints who were masters of the spiritual life. St. Teresa of Jesus wrote: "When you do not receive communion and you do not attend Mass, you can make a spiritual communion, which is a most beneficial practice; by it the love of God will be greatly impressed on you" [The Way of Perfection, Ch. 35] ‘Thus, the passionate desire for God, whom the saints have seen as the Sole Satisfier, and who in the Eucharist is the "summit and source of the Christian life", is at the root of this practice. The experience of St. Padre Pio illustrates the compelling desire felt by the saints in the face of the drawing and attracting power of God's love: “My heart feels as if it were being drawn by a superior force each morning just before uniting with Him in the Blessed Sacrament.
