La ley de la conservación de la materia dice que hay que hay que pagar algo del mismo valor por todo lo que obtienes. No puedes obtener algo de la nada. Los hermanos Elric (Ed y Al), quienes viven con su madre durante los primeros 10 años de su vida, son protagonistas de la historia. Su padre fue un famoso alquimista por sus trabajos, pero los abandono y nunca regreso. Ed nunca perdono a su padre por haberlos abandonado y ver a su madre entristecerse todos los días un poco más por su ausencia. Aun así, su madre se mostraba muy orgullosa de como sus hijos dedicaban mucho tiempo al estudio de la alquimia ya que les recordaba a su padre. Un día, su madre murió por una enfermedad muy larga que oculto en silencio para no preocuparles a sus hijos, ellos no lo aceptaron y decidieron estudiar alquimia para realizar lo prohibido: una transmutación humana para traer de nuevo a la vida a su madre.
